‎New York: Currier & Ives 1861. Hand-coloured lithograph by Charles Parsons signature in image. Expert marginal repairs. Sheet size: 22 1/2 x 32 inches. Image size: 17 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches. A magnificent Currier & Ives portrait of one of the premier yachts in the New York Yacht Club: the yacht that beat the "America" in her speed trials.<br/> <br/>The Stevens brothers listed in the title were members of a prominent American family their father had served in the American Revolution. John Cox Stevens was one of the founding members of the New York Yacht Club the first Commodore and one of five sponsors of the "America" the yacht that went to England in 1851 and won the race thereafter known as the America's Cup Race. His brother Robert L. Stevens designed the "Maria" which beat the "America" during the series of speed trial races to Sandy Hook prior to the latter's epoch-making trip to England. The "Maria" was one of the most beautiful yachts in an era of exceptionally beautiful boats: an icon amongst American yachts. It was estimated that the Stevens spent a total of $100000 on experiments and alterations involving Maria in the 22 years that she was in the family. ‎High Water in the Mississippi‎

‎New York: Currier & Ives 1868. Hand-coloured lithograph by James Merrit Ives after Fanny Palmer. A poignant image demonstrating the triumph of the human spirit and depicting the twin stack steam paddle wheel and riverboat "Stonewall Jackson."<br/> <br/>In the foreground uprooted trees bob in the current using a roof as a raft two men pole themselves and nine others to safety one of their companions holds tight to reins of a mule swimming beside the roof whilst two others rescue furniture and a barrel. In the mid-ground: a large white-painted house with second-floor balconies front and back and a smaller cook-house off to the right side. Two men in a row boat approach the back of the house a lady stands on the balcony speaking to the men; on the widow's walk on the roof a man and a woman stand: the man waves a handkerchief to the twin-stack riverboat. The riverboat "Stonewall Jackson" is travelling at speed: the near-side paddle creates a substantial wake the flags fly in the stiff breeze and the smoke from the stacks steams backwards: passengers line the rails attracted by the human drama they are passing. The overall impression is of a crisis that is being survived and dealt with by man's ingenuity whilst life continues.<br/> <br/>Conningham 2819; Gale 3057. Currier & Ives unknown books‎

‎FOLLOWING THE GUIDON‎

‎Hardback with dusjacket, IX 502 pages., 46 b/w ill. 400 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Languages: French. ISBN 9782930054179. Contributions to the Study of the Flemish Primitives(CSFP 12) Until now, little was known about manuscript illumination in Hainault before the arrival of Simon Marmion at Valenciennes around 1458. This monograph intends to bridge that gap by highlighting the work of Marc Caussin, a Hainault miniaturist active in Valenciennes from the 1430s to the 1470s. An existing Cambrai missal paired with by a highly detailed contractual account has led to the attribution of fourteen manuscripts to Caussin. Alongside standard devotional books, Caussin illuminated more personalized commissions such as a copy of the Chroniques martiniennes for Philippe de Croy, count of Chimay. Caussin also worked for other renowned bibliophiles, the most illustrious being the Duke of Burgundy himself, Philip the Good. Caussin?s activity could be placed in context thanks to an abundance of archival sources. Some fifty documents give unique information concerning his family background and his professional network in Hainault and other cities in the southern Netherlands. Exploited for all the richness of their content, the manuscripts grouped around Marc Caussin have allowed us to reconstruct an artistic, social, religious and intellectual milieu about which very little was previously known.‎

‎Virginia Woolf?s Reading Notebooks 14 and 46‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, 355 pages, 216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:5 b/w, 13 col., 1 tables b/w., Language(s):English. *New . ISBN 9782503597614.‎

‎Virginia Woolf?s reading notes offer a fascinating insight into her mind at work, reading ?with a pen and notebook, seriously?, engaging in a lively dialogue with the literary tradition, receptive to the books she is reading and preparing at the same time the critical work that she intends to produce. The two notebooks published and presented in this volume, notebooks XIV and XLVI (according to Brenda Silver?s classification) were used for the preparation of ?Phases of Fiction?, one of her most original works, and for several essays and reviews. They include quotations, comments on the spur of the moment, and tentative planning for the writing in progress. This edition situates the notes in the immediate context of Woolf?s writing project and in the general context of her relationship to the authors being read. It provides a full transcription of each note and whenever possible quotes the passage in the source from which it derives, and identifies the place where it has been used. It offers a stimulating demonstration of practical intertextuality in progress.‎

‎Daniel Thomas‎

‎Old English Poet as Reader‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, 312 pages, 156 x 234 mm, English text. *New.‎

‎Little is known about the original audiences of Old English poetry. The clearest evidence we possess for the reception of these verse texts is provided by the poets themselves, who must have been amongst the most dedicated and learned consumers of the poetic corpus to which they contributed. Thinking about how these poets read and responded to the work of their fellow practitioners can help us to recover something of the literary attitudes and expectations that governed both the production and reception of Old English poetry. The Old English Poet as Reader proposes a new approach to the study of Old English poetry which simultaneously recognizes the traditional and formulaic aspects of Old English poetry while also accepting that poets working within this tradition engaged in direct and sophisticated ways with individual vernacular poetic models. The extent to which this can be demonstrated from the surviving and inevitably partial record of Old English verse suggests that such strategies constituted a key feature of the vernacular tradition for both poets and audiences. Scholars have long been accustomed to thinking about Old English poets as engaged readers of their Latin textual sources. This volume argues that we must now recognize them as equally sophisticated and literary readers of their vernacular poetic sources as well.‎

Covers elaborately paneled in gilt with a gilt center lozenge spines with five raised bands elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments gilt board edges and turn-ins all edges gilt marbled endpapers. With the armorial bookplate of The Duke of Gloucester on front paste-downs.<br /> <br /> First edition complete of this 18th century collection of caricatures satirizing the fashionable manners of contemporary London society particularly its dandies known as "macaronis." Created by the husband-and-wife team Matthew fl. 1741-1778 and Mary Darly fl. 1756-1779 these prints pioneered a new British genre of caricature. Each features a single figure set against a plain background with identity conveyed through dress pose and a few well-chosen props. The term macaroni prints aptly reflects their inspiration-caricature drawings by Pier Leone Ghezzi which Grand Tourists brought back from Rome. This substantial collection includes contributions from several notable London artists such as James Sayer Matthias Darly H. W. Bunbury Sir Edward Newenham Elizabeth Bridgetta Gulston J. Williams and Edward Topham.<br /> <br /> The "macaroni" was a prominent social archetype in 18th-century England representing a flamboyant effeminate and fashion-obsessed young man. Noted for their extravagant adoption of Italian and French styles macaronis were distinguished by their elaborate clothing meticulous grooming and ostentatious mannerisms - often seen as lacking in substance or seriousness. By the 1770s "macaroni" had become a popular slang term for a dandy or fashion victim.<br /> <br /> Matthew Darly was a respected designer and printseller known for his involvement in publishing Robert Manwaring's The Chair-Maker's Guide 1766 and Chippendale's The Gentleman's and Cabinet-Maker's Director 1754. He also collaborated with ornithologist George Edwards on A New Book of Chinese Designs 1754. In 1749 Matthew was questioned by the government regarding the sale of satirical prints mocking the Duke of Cumberland. He admitted to acquiring a hundred many of which had been sold by his wife in exchange for a book of ornament-likely his own recently published New Book of Ornament 1749 ODNB. By 1762 Mary Darly had taken on the role of publisher for satirical prints though the exact date of their marriage remains uncertain. It is possible she was the same wife referenced in 1749 as she earlier described herself as a "Fun Merchant at the Acorn in Ryder's Court Fleet Street." However there is reason to believe she may have been Matthews' second wife. By 1766 the couple had firmly established their business at 39 Strand.<br /> <br /> As political tensions escalated in the early 1770s caricaturists shifted their focus from attacking political and aristocratic figures to ridiculing the exaggerated fashions and mannerisms of the macaronis. This publication proved highly popular prompting a reprint in 1776. True to her bold style Mary Darly advertised it as "the most entertaining Work ever published in Europe."<br /> <br /> Despite their contemporary wide popularity and broad distribution and their importance in the history of British caricature the albums of Mary Darly are of phenomenal scarcity. Of the volumes under notice OCLC/KVK locate just three copies of the first volume 1771: Yale University Library University of Texas Harry Ransom & University of Virginia and three copies of the second volume 1772: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Harvard University and Princeton University.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester 1900-74 bookplates collector and member of the British royal family being the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. ‎Latin Ptolemaic Writings on Astronomy and Astrology up to AD 1700 A Comprehensive Survey of the Works, Manuscripts and Early Printed Editions‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, 2 vols, 1000 p., 178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:32 col., 2 tables b/w., Language(s):English. *New . ISBN 9782503607153.‎

‎Throughout the Middles Ages and the early modern period, Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus, c. 100-170 A.D.) was considered the foremost authority in mathematical astronomy and in astrology in all societies that inherited Greek learning, including the Islamic world and Latin Europe. The history of the Ptolemaic tradition in these civilisations, however, has never been systematically researched. This book offers the first complete treatment for the Latin world. It includes a full survey of the Ptolemaic works (original works in translation, pseudepigrapha and commentaries), together with a catalogue of 693 manuscripts and 104 early printed editions (up to 1700 A.D.) of these works. This essential volume contains nothing less than the ultimate bibliographical and codicological survey of the entire Latin Ptolemaic tradition on astronomy and astrology up to AD 1700, in all its sprawling and oftentimes surprising detail. The end result is a monument of unrivalled erudition that breaks new ground on a page-by-page basis. It effectively puts contemporary research on the history of astronomy and astrology on a completely new foundation and is destined to remain the go-to resource in this area for many decades, if not centuries, to come (C. Philipp E. Nothaft)‎
