A single issue of this Upstate New York weekly newspaper which began publication in 1801. This issue contains the text of President Jefferson's Message to Congress of Nov. 8th. In his speech Jefferson discusses relations with foreign powers including the Delaware and other Indian tribes the Louisiana Purchase; the United States Navy; and the federal budget. Critical of Jefferson Croswell would later be tried for libel and defended before the Supreme Court by Alexander Hamilton. The publication of this weekly newspaper would continue through 1807. unknown

A collection of c. 250 French printers and publishers marks and some vignettes used by them.
<p>No place no date but French c. 1900. Each mark pasted on a single sheet of thin paper 17 x 22 cm. Most with an identification in ink at the bottom of the sheet. paper browned uniformly and eight sheets with rodent damage not affecting the image.</p><p>A curious collection. The marks and vignettes are mostly French Paris even but there are marks from all over France and also a few European: Milan Genève Bruxelles Madrid most identify 19th century printers and publishers but there are a few earlier ones. Some printers and publishers are represented with more than one mark some identical but mostly with slight differences.</p>

An informative pair of promotional pamphlets issued by the Associated Publishers a notable African-American publishing house during the early-20th century. Both works provide a valuable peek into the marketing of books and images to the African-American community in the early-20th century. The first work Publications of the Associated Publishers Inc. is a catalogue of currently available publications listed by title author and other specific details with descriptions of each book at varying lengths. The authors represented here include Carter Woodson numerous titles here Kelly Miller Robert Kerlin Booker T. Washington Paul Laurence Dunbar and others. Three works including the Washington and Dunbar are given full-page illustrated treatment here. The penultimate page includes a listing of all the "Works Produced by the Association since its Organization September 9 1915." Our proposed date for the work comes from the fact that the first two books listed -- the only two books listed on the first page -- were published in 1926. OCLC lists different versions of Associated Publishers catalogues issued between 1924 and the 1960s but we do not locate the present version.<br /> <br /> The second work present here advertises collections of portraits of notable African-American leaders authors musicians artists and more touted as "The history of the Negro race told with the pictures of its great men and women." The front cover of the brochure is illustrated with portraits of Frederick Douglass Booker T. Washington Paul Laurence Dunbar and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The main thrust of the work includes a dozen themed groups of pictures offered under titles such as "Negroes Internationally Known" "Negro Women of Distinction" "Negroes of Genius" and so forth. In total the brochure offers portraits of over 150 prominent African American figures. Also available are larger-format photographs measuring 11 x 14 inches featuring "Eleven Distinguished Negroes." The brochure ends with an order form. Dating this brochure is challenging because of the rarity of both the brochure and the photographs it advertises. OCLC lists just one record under this title comprising a hundred pictures dated 1927. Harlem bookseller Lewis Michaux repurposed the present brochure in the 1950s perhaps to advertise the remainder of photographs not originally sold by Associated.<br /> <br /> Associated Publishers was a publishing company founded in 1921 by Carter G. Woodson 1875-1950 a "Father of Black History." Woodson was an African American historian and journalist and a founder of both the Association for the Study of African American Life and History ASALH and The Journal of Negro History. The son of formerly enslaved parents Woodson earned a Ph.D. in history at Harvard only the second African American to do so after W.E.B. DuBois. Confronted with the realization that major publishing companies showed no interest in producing works related to African American life and history Woodson organized The Associated Publishers as an outlet for publishing papers books translations and other materials related to African American culture. Washington 1856–1915 author orator and founder of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The portrait was printed in a half tone process after a photograph by Scurlock Studio of Washington D.C. founded by Addison N. Scurlock 1883–1964. </p> <p>Associated Publishers Inc. of Washington D.C. were established in 1921 by Carter G. Woodson to publish books on African-American history including his own. Known as the “Father of Black History†Woodson began the annual celebration of Negro History Week now Black History Month in February 1926. </p> <p>Jarvis R. Given’s 2021 book Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching describes the firm’s long history of publishing portraits of important African-Americans “lithographs with suitable margins for framing.†These portraits were issued from the 1930s into the 1960s. Faint toning at folds; near fine.</p> <p>Prospectus for Negro Musicians and Their Music published in 1936 by Carter Woodson’s Associated Publishers the first firm devoted exclusively to publishing Black-themed books and related materials. The 439-page illustrated book is promoted as the first history of Blacks in music and the first “to compare scientifically the achievements of the Negro in this sphere with those of other advanced peoples.â€</p> <p>The prospectus reprints the book’s table of contents as well as six newspaper or magazine reviews including those in The Knickerbocker Press The Boston Globe The Birmingham News-Age-Herald and The Nashville Banner. An order blank is printed on the back.</p> <p>“The Associated Publishers was born in the fertile mind of Carter G. Woodson being part of his plan to correct the widely held belief that the Negro had no history. Following World War I Woodson sensed a desire among Negroes to know more about their past. Publishing companies however were not interested in bringing out serious works on the Negro. Mild foxing; near fine.</p> <p>Almost life-size portrait of Ralph Bunche 1904–1971 political scientist scholar and diplomat. Bunche was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic negotiations effecting an armistice between the new state of Israel and its Arab neighbors. He was awarded the U.S. Medal of Freedom in 1963.</p> <p>Bunche’s bust portrait was printed in a halftone process after a photograph likely taken the year before he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. Howard University records a print of this identical image but their example has a caption and a copyright date of 1949. </p> <p>Associated Publishers Inc. of Washington D.C. were established in 1921 by Carter G. Britton and Rey 1850. Single sheet measuring 8 ¼ x 10 ¾ inches on blue wove paper. Small chip to corner not affecting image some older tape repairs verso at margins else fine very good plus overall and quite attractive. Very Good. A series of four illustrations telling the story of a mining party that heads out with a pack mule only to fail to find gold and lose their mule before returning to a new prospect with their clothes in shambles. This is entry 209 in Baird’s California’s Pictorial Letter Sheets in which he sets the publication date as being prior to 1855. The series possibly illustrates scenes from a song. A particularly fine example on the classic blue wove paper of the period. unknown
