Auteur Suisse né à Lausanne, l'auteur s'est consacré à la carrière des lettres après avoir quitté l'armée, il se fait connaître à partir de 1783 avec 3 romans sentimentaux et épistolaires, en vogue alors, et que l'on retrouve chez Baculard d'Arnaud et dont l'origine remonte à Richardson. Ses 3 romans ont bénéficié d'une certaine renommée, en France et en Suisse. Camille est un roman ou l'analyse psychologique tient un grand rôle, on y voit le cheminement amoureux de deux amies que tout oppose, une est réfléchie et raisonneuse, mélancolique, l'autre se targue de simplicité et de gaîté et ne voit nul intérêt dans la réflexion. La plus amoureuse ne sera pas celle que l'on croit.
