br. "Emily L." è uno degli ultimi romanzi di Marguerite Duras. Pubblicato nel 1987 intreccia la vicenda di due donne: quella di una scrittrice anziana che vive un amore tormentato con un uomo molto più giovane di lei, quella di una poetessa a cui il marito ha distrutto per gelosia la sua poesia più importante. Si tratta di un romanzo scritto in due tempi, Duras stessa rivelerà di aver inserito la vicenda della poetessa solo in un secondo momento e quando già il romanzo era terminato. Il testo è esito dunque di un decoupage, di cui non si sospetterebbe l'artificio se la sua autrice non lo avesse confessato. Si dipana infatti attraverso una vertiginosa mise en abyme, dispiegata attraverso un gioco di rimandi speculari che tendono a confondere e disorientare la lettura. Rappresenta insomma un oggetto di studio complesso che tende a sfidare le possibilità stessa di analisi non solo semiotiche ma anche critico-letterarie. Il romanzo appartiene alla fase ultima della produzione letteraria di Duras ed è stato accusato di risentire della decadenza intellettuale e fisica della sua autrice... Eppure proprio in questo limite risiede anche la sua segreta risorsa. Intessuto su un dialogo tra la narratrice e il suo interlocutore, l'uomo di cui lei è innamorata, questo sofferto racconto traduce e trasferisce nella e attraverso la scrittura, il vissuto e la vicenda autobiografica di Duras con Yann Andrea, giovane scrittore che condividerà con lei l'ultimo periodo della sua vita.
