A lovely copy of this classic work in the original dust jacket. "The stirring drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction is brought vividly to life in this really magnificent novel" jacket. Bound in grey cloth boards with dark blue title to spine and front board. Gentle bumping and light rubbing to corners. A few short closed tears to the book cloth along the spine ends. Offsetting to endpapers and light even browning to interior. Small spot of soiling to top margin of first few pages and occasional finger smudges to margins else clean and bright. In illustrated first edition first issue dust jacket with dark brown title to spine and front panels. The price of $3.00 is printed on the bottom corner of the front flap and the rear panel of Macmillan Spring Novels features "Gone with the Wind" in the second column in the second position underneath "South Riding." There are a few chips to the edges of the jacket creases wear and several long closed tears along the edges of both panels and across the spine. Dust jacket good piece missing at bottom of spine and some smaller pieces missing tears to front and rear hinge of flaps and to spine wear top of front flap clipped but price is at bottom of flap. Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell was born November 8 1900 in Atlanta Georgia into a wealthy and prominent family her father an attorney and her mother a Catholic rights activist and suffragist her maternal grandfather having served in the Confederate Army. Mitchell grew up in Jackson Hill Atlanta hearing tales of the Civil War and Reconstruction in Atlanta from her grandmother attending women's suffrage rallies with her mother and being raised mostly Catholic all factors that would feed into her most well-known work "Gone with the Wind". <br /> <br /> "Gone with the Wind" was published June 30 1936 the result of years of work starting in 1928. Upon publication "Gone with the Wind" was an immense critical and commercial success selling over 1 million copies by the end of 1936 in spite of the ongoing Great Depression. The novel has been criticized for it's romantic depiction of the South derogatory depictions of African Americans and downplaying of the violent role of the Klu Klux Klan post-Reconstruction. Despite this "Gone with the Wind" remains an immensely popular work having received award-winning adaptations for the screen and stage and remains the second favorite book of Americans after the Bible as of a 2014 Harris poll. 1392180. Near Very Good. 8vo. 8 3-1037 5 pp. Grey cloth with blue lettering on the front board a wind design in blue on the front board blue lettering and decorations on the spine; brown topstain. Without the dust jacket. States "Published June 1936" on the copyright page. This novel's legacy has gone through several evolutions: Mitchell's tale is criticized for sanitizing and glossing over the horrors of American slavery. At the same time modern readers praise the novel for Scarlett's ability to grow and change into a gritty woman who works outside the home to provide for herself even though she as a character began the story as a spoiled rich girl. The novel follows mostly anti-heroes as they navigate the post-war south. A small tear to the spine's crown a few scattered small spots of discoloration on the leaves one leaf with a tear to its corner. A name dated 1936 on the free front endpaper. Macmillan hardcover
