Greg Mitchell born 1947 is an American author and journalist. He has written twelve nonfiction books on United States politics and history of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has also written and directed three film documentaries. The award-winning feature Atomic Cover-up 2021 screened at over fifteen film festivals. The First Attack Ads: Hollywood vs. Upton Sinclair aired over hundreds of PBS stations in October 2022 and The Memorial Day Massacre is scheduled to do the same in 2023. His latest book published by the New Press in 2020 was the award-winning The Beginning or the End: How Hollywood — and America — Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. His previous book a bestseller was published by Crown in October 2016 and in ten editions abroad was The Tunnels: Escapes Under the Berlin Wall and the Historic Films the JFK White House Tried to Kill. From 2009 to 2016 he blogged on the media and politics for The Nation where he closely covered WikiLeaks. He co-produced the acclaimed 2014 film documentary Following the Ninth about the political and cultural influence of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. September 20 1878 - November 25 1968 was an American writer muckraker political activist and the 1934 Democratic Party nominee for governor of California. He wrote nearly 100 books and other works in several genres. Sinclair's work was well known and popular in the first half of the 20th century and he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1943. In 1919 he published The Brass Check a muckraking exposé of American journalism that publicized the issue of yellow journalism and the limitations of the "free press" in the United States. Four years after publication of The Brass Check the first code of ethics for journalists was created. Many of his novels can be read as historical works. Writing during the Progressive Era Sinclair describes the world of the industrialized United States from both the working man's and the industrialist's points of view. After his loss to Merriam Sinclair abandoned EPIC and politics to return to writing. In 1935 he published I Candidate for Governor: And How I Got Licked in which he described the techniques employed by Merriam's supporters including the then popular Aimee Semple McPherson who vehemently opposed socialism and what she perceived as Sinclair's modernism. Derived from a Kirkus review: A colorful account of California's 1934 gubernatorial race a forerunner of today's intense electioneering. It is now a secular institution. The college accepted female applicants from 1872 to 1909 but did not become fully co-educational until 1970. Before full co-education Wesleyan alumni and other supporters of women's education established Connecticut College for women in 1912. Wesleyan along with Amherst and Williams colleges is part of "The Little Three" also traditionally referred to as the Little Ivies. Wesleyan University has distinguished alumni in the arts and sciences literature politics and government business journalism and academia. Its alumni include 13 Pulitzer Prize winners 14 Rhodes scholars three Truman scholars three Guggenheim fellows 156 Fulbright scholars and seven MacArthur fellows. Additionally four Nobel laureates have been associated with the university as faculty members. Among its prominent alumni are politicians and political appointees: 34 members of the United States Congress 16 presidential cabinet members 11 governors six directors and heads of U.S. federal agencies two attorneys general of the United States and one Associate Supreme Court Justice. In this rare surviving issue there are the following items from the contents. Just Before the Battle Story by A. T. Tedcastle Reverend Arthur T. Tedcastle died at the age 100 in 2007. Reverend Tedcastle was a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown in 1929 and received his Master of Divinity at Yale Divinity School in 1933. He was a member of the New York East Conference and the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Reverend Tedcastle was the district superintendent of the Connecticut Central District from 1957-1963 and was Pastor of the Stratford United Methodist Church from 1963 to 1973.; College as an Escape Essay by Leonard Powell; Night Death Poem by Ernest C. Bijou; The Ungrateful Argonauts Story by Arthur L. Vogelback; Emerson and the New Poetry Essay by C. Bradford Mitchell this is believed to be the same C. Bradford Mitchell formerly Director of Information for the American Merchant Marine Institute who contributed several articles on ships and the sea to AMERICAN HERITAGE.; The Moon from High Street poem by R. Hanchett; Independence Square poem by John R. Swain; and A Campfire Seance story by E. Wayne Williams. The Cardinal and its colors are a symbol of Wesleyan University. Cardinal red and black were adopted as Wesleyan's colors in a general college meeting on Oct. 10 1884. An editorial in the Wesleyan Argus endorsed the change: "Lavender the former color is not a striking color. Waving as a pennant or smoothed into a bow it has not the brilliant tint which is desirable in a college color.Cardinal and Black make a combination that is rich and striking." Baker wrote that: "Woodrow Wilson's two years at Wesleyan University Middletown Connecticut were among the happiest of his whole life." The rest of the article addresses aspects of his time at the University. Morris Barker Crawford September 26 1852 - 1940 was an American academic and the first professor of physics at Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1874 and he was a member of the Eclectic Society and of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Wesleyan in 1877. He was a tutor in Mathematics at Wesleyan from 1874-1877. He also served as registrar. From 1877-1880 he studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Leipzig and the University of Berlin. He was appointed an instructor of Physics in 1880 an associate professor in 1881 and a full professor in 1884. He was the first physics professor at Wesleyan the Foss Professor of Physics. He retired in 1921 and was elected Professor Emeritus. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Physical Society. Prof. Crawford was also a faculty member with Woodrow Wilson during Wilson's time at the University. Homer E. Woodbridge was a member of the Wesleyan University faculty and a world renown scholar recognized for his work on Sir William Temple. Wesleyan University paperback
