Dans une dernière partie, sont regroupés des entretiens avec Gide et ceux qui l’ont connu. Il y a dans cette nécessité d’exhaustivité de Pierre-Quint, le désir de dégager, dans l’œuvre systémique de Gide, un enseignement, une morale. « En un certain sens toute l’œuvre de Gide est de critique : critique littéraire dans Paludes, critique des mobiles de l’action dans Les Caves du Vatican, critique (celle-ci, la plus importante) de l’introspection et des conventions nécessaires au romancier dans Les Faux-Monnayeurs (…) Le récit est de critique parce qu’il aboutit à une question (…) Il semble que Gide remette en question la vie psychologique telle qu’elle a été découpée et étiquetée par la morale et la religion du XIXe siècle – et le principe d’identité même qui la gouverne. »
