‎Une analyse de l'expression mythique chez Hugo, l'usage qu'il fait du merveilleux, de la mythologie et du mythe dans son œuvre. — "Ayant reconnu le caractère spontanément mythique de la pensée de Hugo, c'est à travers cette forme d'expression qu'Albouy suit la genèse de cette pensée et en éprouve la cohérence. Il ne s'agit donc de rien de moins que d'une exploration et d'une restitution de l'univers hugolien dans son ensemble. Hugo n'a-t-il pas affirmé lui-même, en 1863, que le rêve, c'est-à-dire l'imagination sous toutes ses formes, est l'instrument le moins insuffisant dont nous disposions pour pénétrer le réel ? (...) La première partie montre les attaches de Hugo avec son temps et les traits qui l'en distinguent. Ce panorama nous laisse apercevoir de riches perspectives. Puis Albouy examine, comme exemple privilégié, le comportement de Hugo vis-à-vis de la mythologie grecque. (...) Dans un chapitre essentiel, Albouy définit ensuite les conditions de la création mythique chez Hugo, à savoir une aptitude visionnaire à discerner dans les objets autre chose qu'eux-mêmes, en particulier des formes animales, et une tendance à revivre de façon concrète et réaliste des métaphores apparemment usées. Ces dons ne pourront se déployer qu'à partir du moment où Hugo aura pris pleinement conscience d'une conception animiste de l'univers, demeurée latente chez lui avant l'exil. Albouy peut alors s'engager dans un immense voyage qui le mène du moi de l'Homme au moi de l'Infini, à travers le monde vivant des éléments : Terre, Océan, Ciel. Il est impossible de le suivre, même de loin, dans cette navigation sidérale. On ne peut que donner une idée imparfaite de la puissance du mouvement et de la richesse du détail, due à une connaissance profondément maîtrisée de l'œuvre imprimée et manuscrite. Trois figures dominent les mythes de l'Homme : le Titan, Satan, et Jésus. (...) Le livre est animé sans défaillance d'un véritable mouvement dramatique, soutenu par la concision vigoureuse et allègre du style. Réussite peu ordinaire, si l'on songe au nombre de détails précis que l'auteur a su accorder, à la quantité de mises au point jamais vétilleuses que l'on rencontre touchant la pensée de Hugo ou la genèse de ses œuvres. Si les âges futurs confirment qu'en Victor Hugo les Français ont, de façon inespérée, trouvé leur Homère, l'ouvrage de Pierre Albouy restera parmi les plus solides monuments d'une gratitude profonde et attentive."
