Album of erotic drawings. France ca. 1815. 4to 26 x 21.5 cm. A matching set of 12 erotic drawings image area about 20 x 16 cm in coloured gouaches. Each is drawn on thick paperboard and mounted on the album leaves. 20th-century red goatskin morocco.
A matching set of 12 skilfully executed erotic gouache drawings in numerous colours each showing a naked or more often partly undressed young man and woman engaged in manual vaginal or oral sex. Each is set in an interior in at least most cases domestic most of them richly furnished. Though the drawings depict several different men and women some of them seem to appear in more than one drawing. One drawing appears to show a home library another includes a case full of books and two others have an open book lying on the floor. Another has the woman sitting on the man's lap before a writing desk with a quill pen in her hand. These may be intended to suggest that the man is the young lady's tutor and they got distracted from their lessons. The clothing suggests couples from fairly high social standing. The clothing architectural decoration furniture clocks lamps vases etc. much of it in Empire Style suggest a date around 1815 perhaps in France.The drawings are in good condition and the binding fine. hardcover

The text titled Les Quinze joies de mariage The 15 Joys of Marriage is an anonymous late 14th or early 15th century French satire in prose which presents a picture full of sharpness and humour of the rows and deceits which afflict the married state commiserating the blindness of husbands in everyday concrete situations. Very handsome fully hand-coloured copy of best edition - here in a lovely binding with wide margins and fresh plates showing erotic subjects in a classical Roman manner. Taken from the secret cabinet of the King of Naples some pieces coming from Pompei and Herculaneum. About half the plates depict sculptures in various media while the other half show scenes individual people Gods and couples often with a touch of humour. Published five years earlier under a slightly different title the first edition had only 41 plates without colour. Paris c.1930s. . Six gelatin silver prints 22 x 16 cm. Very good condition and with very good tone. Framed. A series of six nude studies showing the same model posing in the photographer's studio. The style of the photographs which artistically combines high and low art allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time little is known about it as despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were perhaps better known but wanted to hide their real identities. Basel: Bibliotheca Erotica et Curiosa 1916. First edition of this scarce collection. One of 300 copies. Complete with all 10 erotic plates. Each of the plates measuring 5 7/8 x 7 inches and are mounted on stiff cards measuring 9 7/8 x 13 inches. This copy without the printed list of plates. In the original brown cloth portfolio wear. A very good copy of one of Von Bayros scarcer and more bizarre publications. Only one copy located by OCLC though they do come up at auction on occasion. The title translates: Moral Pictures from Gallant Times; A Cycle of 10 Engravings. Rather tongue in cheek in light of the contents. Each plate was printed in heliogravure. "Franz von Bayros was an Austrian commercial artist illustrator and painter best known for his controversial "Tales at the Dressing Table" portfolio. Franz von Bayros also Marquis de Bayros was born on May 28 1866 in Zagreb in present-day Croatia. He may be one of the most fascinating drawers and designers of fin de si�cle Austria. At the age 17 Bayros passed the entrance exam for the Vienna Academy with Eduard von Engerth. Bayros mixed in elegant society and soon belonged to the circle of friends of Johann Straub whose step daughter Alice he married on 1896. The next year Bayros moved to Munich. In 1904 Bayros gave his first exhibition in Munich which was a great success. From 1904 until 1908 Bayros traveled to Paris and Italy for his studies. Returning Vienna he felt himself a stranger. The outbreak of the First World War was yet another setback for Bayros. The artist died on April 2 1924 from a cerebral hemorrhage." World of Art.
