EROTICA.
The Netherlands ca. 1770. 8vo. With 4 engraved plates. Contemporary red half roan gold-tooled spine.
2 184 pp.Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine" an 18th-century Dutch picaresque erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother Julia in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however but also provides arguments for free morals for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived.With bookplate and owner's inscription. The plate facing page 43 loosely inserted but otherwise in very good condition. Spine slightly rubbed and colour of the paper sides faded but still firm and otherwise good.l Buijnsters Ned. lit. achtiende eeuw pp. 108-109; Buisman 132 1 copy; Gay & Lemonnyer I col. 374; STCN same copy; WorldCat & KVK same copy. unknown

EROTICA.
Love and Safety;
London/Paris: 1896. Rare women's sex manual of the "naughty 'nineties" Octavo. Original plain wrappers with original glassine bearing printed titles in blue to spine and front. Printed on handmade paper. Patterned border to each page in red. Glassine generally a little worn at extremities with a split superficially to glassine not to wrappers down rear joint and some loss to spine ends internally clean good condition for this rare survival. An early edition of this exceptionally rare and remarkably obscene women's guide to all matters pertaining to sexual pleasure the avoidance of pregnancy and the simulation of virginity. Editions of Love and Safety were still being printed in the 1960s but this is a truly rare early edition with no copies traced in institutional or auction records. The British Library and Bibliotheque Nationale hold the only two institutional copies of an 1898 edition published by Leonard Smithers's Erotika Biblion Society but this edition precedes by two years. One copy of an 1885 edition printed in Paris "the Modern Babylon" in a private edition of 100 copies is recorded as appearing at auction in 2009 that copy extra-illustrated with erotic photographs selling for $3600. Appendices A and B in this edition treat respectively of aphrodisiac recipes and urolagnia and C has a long and intriguing "catalogue of rare curious and voluptuous reading" giving an insight into the erotic and practical books available to the anglophone reader of the "naughty 'nineties". This copy comes from the collection of legendary book collector and rock & roll guitarist Martin Stone with his pencil notes to front free endpaper. [London/Paris?:] unknown

EROTICA. DAMNED STUFF
Did you ever see such Damned Stuff Or So-Much-The Better. A Story Without Head or Tail Wit or Humor
London: Prnted for C. G. Seyffert n Pall-mall. 1760. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo pp. viii 168 contemporary calf recently rebacked raised bands between gilt rules red leather label; lacks half-title and last leaf of Contents both of which are supplied in photocopy pp. 1 -2 repaired first three leaves of text dampstained but clean after that. Mentions or discussions of this work appear in scholarly books on eighteenth-century erotica e. .g Karen Harvey: Sex and Gender in the Eighteenth Century 2004 but it is really a fairy story with occasional snatches of possible flagellation or other such popular activities for the 18th century gallant. It was mentioned or reviewed in at least three periodicals The Monthly Review for 1760 which suggested the original was in French. The Critical Review confirmed the French origin: "This is a wretched translation of a silly attempt to humour in the French with scarce any other addition than that of the title-page." Sir Walter Scott had a copy in his library at Abbotsford. ESTC T77689 locates copies in BL 2 NLS Advocates; McMaster Wisconsin-Madison UCLA and Penn. London: Prnted for C. G.
