L'opera è frammentaria e lacunosa. La mutilazione dell'opera è attribuibile alla licenziosità dell'argomento e al realismo degli ambienti descritti, che producono un'immagine moralmente disdicevole della Roma imperiale e poco edificante per il lettore. L'antefatto, soltanto deducibile, racconta di un oltraggio commesso nei confronti della divinità fallica Priapo, che da lì in poi lo perseguita provocando al protagonista una serie di insuccessi erotici. L'opera offre uno spaccato vivace e colorato, non senza punte di chiara volgarità, della vita di quel ceto sociale.
