STEINBECK, John
The Bettencourt: A Christmas Story Signed Typescript of an Unpublished -- and Unpublishable -- Short Story
1957. unbound. fine. 4 page single-spaced carbon typescript of an original short story apparently sent to a few friends as a holiday keepsake. This scatalogical tale was never in print as no book house would accept it for obvious reasons. Presentation copy to Nick Cassavetes brother of John with a four word inscription in Greek. Undated but circa 1957.

In order to preserve the integrity of its unpublished state we won't disclose the full transcript but can say that the story tells of a peculiar incident occurring in an elementary school bathroom -- it is true to Steinbeck's style of capturing with simplicity and economy of word the fascination children have with their bodily functions. Although today the story would not be deemed "unpublishable" in the context of the 50's it is completely understandable why even such a literary giant as Steinbeck could not find a publisher for it.

unknown

The Grapes of Wrath.
London: William Heinemann 1939. First English edition of the author's classic work. Octavo original cloth. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco chemise and clamshell box. "The Grapes of Wrath is the kind of art that’s poured out of a crucible in which are mingled pity and indignation Its power and importance do not lie in its political insight but in its intense humanity It is the American novel of the season probably the year possibly the decade" Clifton Fadiman. It is the basis for the 1940 John Ford directed film bearing the same name starring Henry Fonda. It is widely considered as one of the greatest American films of all time. In 1989 this film was one of the first 25 films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant."
