NY: Viking 1954. Book. Good -. Hardcover. 1st Edition. A jacketed hardcover first trade edition with considerable charm and some notable flaws. The sequel to Cannery Row. Red topstain and redlines on the title page are present. I am not aware of any points of issue per se. Copyright correct for Viking 1st FP. Dust jacket's price largely eradicated attempted not very successful but in place. The book club this is not lacks the red ink on the title page. While the book is essentially sound various issue are noted bumping of upper back board at spine mild erasure scar/smudge first endsheet. Text unmarked no dogearing binding sound. The above not be construed as a list of all things right/wrong but rather a summary of the major issues. As skilled purchasers will know Good- is a very low grade. Jacket looking decent in it's mylar wrapper has edgewear short tears other scars. Foto will be added by and by. We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described and graded using the strict traditional standards. For this reason we have virtually zero returns. Viking Hardcover

STEINBECK John 1902 1968
Sweet Thursday First Issue
New York: Viking Press 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Fine/Fine. First Printing "First published by The Viking Press in June 1954" on copyright page in First Issue dust jacket with Phillipe Halsman's photo of Steinbeck on back panel and without reviewers' comments. 8vo: x2731pp. Publisher's beige cloth spine and upper cover lettered in red and stamped in blue with silhouettes of gulls; top edge red title page in black and red; in pictorial price-clipped dust jacket by Paul Galdone. A superlative copy of a common book unread and virtually As New in a Fine bright jacket barely rubbed at the head of the spine panel. Goldstone & Payne A33b. "Sweet Thursday was begun as a whimsical attempt to 'convert' the characters and themes of Steinbeck's previous novel Cannery Row 1945. The concept was initially conceived first as a dramatic vehicle 1950 and then as a musical comedy 1952 . . . When the adaptation attempt failed Steinbeck . . . decided instead to write a novel which appeared in 1954 and approximately a year and a half later the Broadway team of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II produced their adaptation under the title of Pipe Dream. . . . At times the novel is sentimental too cute and sententious; at times it is even ludicrous . . . Yet as Bruce Ouderkirk asserts in A John Steinbeck Encyclopedia: 'it is a more artistically complex novel than has usually been recognized for in it Steinbeck creates a romantic comedy for the stage that satirizes many of the conventions of the genre he adopted. Although time has tarnished the relevance of many of the topical concerns discussed in the novel the epistemological questions that Steinbeck raised in Sweet Thursday will remain important to readers in any age.'" Literary Encyclopedia Note: With few exceptions always identified we only stock books in exceptional condition with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Viking Press hardcover
