New York: Viking Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1942. 1st Edition; 2nd State. Hardcover. This copy is a First Edition second state with the second state dust jacket. There is no period between "talk" and "this" on page 112 and the copyright page states The Haddon Craftsmen. The dust jacket is also second state with all four corners clipped. This book is in Very Good condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. There is some light bumping to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright but slightly toned throughout. There is a previous owner's bookplate adhered to the front pastedown page. The price clipped dust jacket has edge wear nicking several small edge tears and rubbing to the spine and flap joints. The rear panel has noticeable toning. "Steinbeck's first novel Cup of Gold published in 1929 is loosely based on the life and death of privateer Henry Morgan. It centers on Morgan's assault and sacking of the city of Panama sometimes referred to as the 'Cup of Gold' and on the women fairer than the sun who were said to be found there. Between 1930 and 1933 Steinbeck produced three shorter works. The Pastures of Heaven published in 1932 consists of twelve interconnected stories about a valley near Monterey which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. In 1933 Steinbeck published The Red Pony a 100-page four-chapter story weaving in memories of Steinbeck's childhood. To a God Unknown named after a Vedic hymn follows the life of a homesteader and his family in California depicting a character with a primal and pagan worship of the land he works. The story tells of the military occupation of a small town in Northern Europe by the army of an unnamed nation at war with England and Russia much like the occupation of Norway by the Germans during World War II. This is a tale of an invading army's occupation of a small town in Northern Europe -- written with an adaptation for the theatre in mind at the request of the OSS with the aim of motivating resistance movements across Europe. The country occupied is not named but for this book Steinbeck received from the King of Norway the King Haakon VII Freedom Cross; the book was quickly translated and published in many countries including an illegal edition by the French Resistance. This is a standard Viking Press copy with no mention of other presses on the copyright page and with the extra period on page 112. A short novel about the military occupation of a small town a contemporary fable inspired by the Nazi invasion of Norway. The book was widely reprinted throughout Europe during the Second World War even in clandestine editions in Nazi-occupied territory. First Canadian edition first printing An attractive copy in blue cloth with light wear to the corners. This copy is similar to that in the Holmes Steinbeck bibliographical catalogue A17h except that the dust jacket is wove rather than smooth paper.
