‎New York: The Viking Press 1961. Very Fine condition in a Very Fine FIRST ISSUE dust jacket. Not price clipped $4.50. No chips. No tears. No creases. No fading or darkening. Protected by a removable Brodart sleeve. Fresh and crisp apparently never read. Clean square and tight. Not a book club edition. Not a remainder. No owner's name or bookplate. The book itself is the second printing before publication of the first edition. BUT PLEASE NOTE: The dust jacket is the first issue with $4.50 at the top of the inside front flap and a photo by William Ward Beecher of a bearded Steinbeck smoking a cigarette on the rear panel. Above the photograph are the requisite blurbs by Saul Bellow Edward Weeks and Lewis Gannet. This FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET produced in the same lot is in close to flawless condition. See Goldstone & Payne A38.b. Because of its NEAR PERFECT condition the jacket represents a great opportunity for the fastidious collector to upgrade a lesser jacket on his or her own first printing of the book. This copy is bound in the publisher's bright blue cloth with a Viking ship stamped in blind on the front cover. The spine is stamped with two black panels and is lettered in silver still bright and shiny as new. "First published in 1961 by The Viking Press Inc." and "SECOND PRINTING BEFORE PUBLICATION" appear on the copyright page. The top edge is tinted blue as called for. From the Dust Jacket: "This new novel will probably surprise even Steinbeck's warmest admirers. Instead of being set in the Far West the scene of most of his books this one takes place on the Northeastern sea-board; instead of depicting simple uneducated people this deals chiefly with a well-born well-to-do society with long traditions behind it. ‎SF: Simon J. Lubin Society of California 1938. Pamphlet. First edition second printing published a month after the first. The cover features Dorthea Lange's famous photo of a mother breast feeding her child. Originally published as a series of articles titled "The Harvest Gypsies" that appeared in the San Francisco News this book is the result of Steinbeck's research into the plight of California's farm workers many of whom migrated from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma. Steinbeck allowed the Lubin Society to publish the articles in booklet form with the addition of "Starvation Under the Orange Trees" that served as an epilogue so that the proceeds could be used to help the farm workers. These writings are immensely important since they provided the basis for The Grapes of Wrath. A couple of barely perceptible spots of foxing to covers else fine. Scarce even in a second printing. ‎Los Angeles: RKO Radio Pictures 1948. Three vintage 11 x 14" color lobby cards for the US release numbers 3 4 and 5 in the sequence. No. 3 has some dust smudges and a short corner tear mended on the verso with tack holes from use; some modest marginal discolorations to others; still a good group. A representative three from the eight lobby cards promoting the 1948 U.S. release of the 1947 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novella. The film first released as LA PERLA was produced in Mexico by Film Asociados Mexico- Americanos in association with �guila Films and was directed by Emilio Fernandez who also collaborated with Steinbeck and Jack Wagner on the screenplay. Master of golden age Mexican cinema Gabriel Figueroa served as cinematographer and won a Golden Globe Award for his work on this film. Steinbeck's conception of THE PEARL as a cinematic vehicle from the start he discussed it as a film with Fernandez as early as 1941 and his active participation in its production make it of particular significance in the field of Steinbeck-related film.
