Fine 1st edition 1st printing book in a Fine 1st issue dustjacket with $2.00 price intact on lower front flap. Only 598 copies were printed by Ballou in 1933 who went out of business after printing those 598 copies and the book didn't have another edition till it was reprinted in 1935 by Covici Friede and Heinemann in the U.K. Tight and unread book with no previous owner markings no soiling clean page edges and the black upper page edges are very evenly dark and unspotted. There's just a tiny bit of softening to the binding cloth at spine ends a tiny rectangular shadow to the cloth at the spine front-side lower edge and just a hint of bumping to upper binding corners to keep it from being As New. It is bound in light green cloth with still bright gilt lettering on the spine. The dustjacket has one tiny edge nick lower front-side spine end that's professionally repaired internally and slight toning to the spine lettering but no fading or toning of other spine colors. Truly beautiful with no tears chips or fading. The book comes with a postcard written by Steinbeck in 1952 very clear writing and signature and quite a lengthy inscription to a young woman who was collecting author signatures who was also involved in 4H activities. She had written Steinbeck about trying to win a trophy and he quotes her his favorite motto in both Spanish and English of 'If you don't want to fly beware of wings' and talks to her of 'food became more important than fame' and that he'd tried once to sell his trophy. The postcard was sent from Steinbeck's New York City 72nd St. address and has 'Steinbeck' as part of the printed sender's address on the card. It is in Near Fine condition - a few tiny age-toned areas one corner tip that had been turned down at some point no material loss a tiny pin prick upper middle edge and a tiny crimp no material loss to the lower edge. The postcard is safeguarded now in a removable archival heavy-duty 16 gauge so stiff enough not to need a backing board removable clear holder that lets you see both sides of the card while in the holder. Also included is a custom clamshell case bronze spine label with a patterned-design outside cloth covering complementing the book's dustjacket and a fully lined ivory-colored soft flannel interior. The card in its holder is housed in an ivory-colored soft flannel flapped-closure pocket built onto the inside of the upper lid of the case with the ivory flannel overall just a bit age-darkened. The book's dustjacket is in a removable clear mylar dustjacket protecter. Rare examples of both a Steinbeck inscription and signature and of Steinbeck's 3rd book - which is his most scarce book to find in collector condition. ; 7-5/8" x 5"; 325 pages; Signed by Author .
