STEINBECK JOHN
Two Original Black & White Comic Photographs of John Steinbeck and His Wife Gwen
N.p: n.p n.d. c. 1930’s. Both approximately 3†x 5â€. One photo is of John and Gwen Steinbeck holding hands striking a campy pose - she glancing dreamily off into the distance wearing a hat with a single extremely tall feather sticking straight up and he staring directly into the camera seemingly suppressing a grin wearing a now old-fashioned leather football helmet. The other is equally amusing with Gwen standing on a stone wall arm held high pointing dramatically into the sky while John has come up beside her and is taking liberties with the hem of her dress lifting it up and staring at her revealed legs. Both are blind stamped ‘JOHN STEINBECK’. Fine. n.p hardcover

STEINBECK John
Typescript Partial Manuscript: Arthur published as "The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights"
No date. Unbound. Near Fine. Carbon typescript incomplete; pp. 102-260; double-spaced; two holes punched on margins; creasing to corners and general toning to first several pages; final page containing only two lines torn affecting text else near fine. Steinbeck began writing The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights in 1956 adapting the story from the Winchester text of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. The manuscript was unfinished at the time of his death ending with the death of chivalry in Lancelot and a version edited by Chase Horton was not published until 1976. The manuscript reflects modest grammatical typed corrections. According to Laura F. Hodges in the Steinbeck Quarterly "Steinbeck took a "living approach" to the retelling of Malory's work by using the original structure and chapter titles but he explored the psychological underpinning of the events and and tuned the use of language to be accessible to a Modern English speaker." Drafts of the Arthur manuscript are recorded at the Center for Steinbeck Studies in San Jose typescript described as "first draft" the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas carbon typescript 546 pages and the Morgan Library typescript incomplete. A unique unfinished work from the Noble Laureate and great American novelist. unknown

Typescript carbon copy of "With Your Wings" a WARTIME STORY about a decorated black pilot returning home. Accompanied by a Typed Letter presenting the piece to BURGESS MEREDITH for a possible reading and broadcast
N.p. New York 1944. Typescript 3pp. numbered 1-3 on rectos of 3 leaves of duplicated radioplay typescript struck through approximately 600 words. Typed Letter one page. 1 vols. 10-14/ x 7-1/2 inches. Slightly age-darkened but very good overall. Typescript 3pp. numbered 1-3 on rectos of 3 leaves of duplicated radioplay typescript struck through approximately 600 words. Typed Letter one page. 1 vols. 10-14/ x 7-1/2 inches. "With Your Wings" Steinbeck Story of a Black Pilot. Evocative Steinbeck story or "mood piece" imagining a decorated black pilot returning to his hometown cheered by his neighbors and welcomed by his father in the house he grew up in with the remark: "Son - every black man in the world is going to fly with your wings." In his cover letter to his friend Burgess Meredith who served in the Air Force during the war he writes: "DEAR BUZZY: A different version of the following was done for overseas broadcast to the troops by O.W.I. This is a different version. I don't know whether you would like to use it or not. It has an odd length. I might be a good idea to use it in some one of your shows. If you want it you are quite welcome to it. It was written against a background of music imagined music I mean. Should you desire to use it I think the story itself will suggest the music. Let me suggest however that the music be soft sustained and all of one piece and that it do not attempt to be directly descriptive of the piece but rather of the spirit of the piece. I would suggest that you yourself read it using the beautiful technique you used in "The Forgotten Village" . the soft reading that seems not to be reading at all. This is pure mood and would have to be delivered like soft music. Anyway there it is and you're welcome to it - if you want it." Office of War Information for which Steinbeck worked during the WW II. UNPUBLISHED until 2014 when the revived Strand Magazine published a version based upon a different typescript from the Steinbeck papers at HRC; a unique draft or variant copy of this moving war-time sketch. From the Estate of BURGESS MEREDITH. unknown

Viva Zapata!
Hollywood 20th Century-Fox February 6 1951 first edition thus. <br/><br/> This is a photostatic copy of the Final Script screenplay for the film that starred Marlon Brando Jean Peters and Anthony Quinn it consists of 148 leaves not including the title page which carries an original stamp from 20th Century-Fox noting "VALUABLE" with a notation to return to 20th Century-Fox's story department files although it carries the date of the script this copy was probably made by 20th Century-Fox in the late 1950s or early 1960s for its own use Quinn won an Academy Award for best supporting actor Steinbeck was nominated for best screenplay while preparing his screenplay Steinbeck wrote to the film's director Elia Kazan "It is a little double-action jewel of a script.a classic example of good film writing" he went on to write "I'll want no word in dialogue that has not some definite reference to the story." to make the script "as tight and terse as possible" Kazan wrote of this script that while he made some cuts as he shot the film and while producer Darryl F. Zanuck made some suggestions which were followed that "all of John's important words and thoughts are faithfully in the film" thus it is likely that this Feb. 6 script is closer to what Steinbeck had originally planned than the May 16 1951 shooting script that followed it this item wasn't in the Adrian H.
