We have a little house with a big garden about half a mile from the plaza - very pleasant. Will be here until October I guess. We don't start shooting THE PEARL until August. I don't suppose there is much chance of your coming down after you finish the Chambermaid Meredith's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID. Blumey was asking about you the other night when we were in town.<br/><br/>We're getting lots of sun and oddly enough a lot of work done a thing I can hardly believe. I wonder how your film "Diary of A Chambermaid" goes. I have some ideas for the future - too many but perhaps worth discussing some time. Tom grows like a bloody weed. He is so black we will have trouble getting him into a hotel in Georgia. And he is very strong and no intellectual company whatever. Gwyn thrives here. Anyway we'll see our picture through here and then go on to New York in October and after that we have no plans.<br/><br/> . The grapevine has nice things to say about your picture. Los Gatos California: 1 page quarto 8 1/2 by 14 inches early 1941. Original excellent content letter signed “John†written in blue ink on yellow lined foolscap paper. Steinbeck writes to Daniel James who had just finished his work as one of the assistant directors to Charles Chaplin on his film classic The Great Dictator. Steinbeck has just returned home from being in Hollywood as well where he was working on his Mexican documentary film The Forgotten Village. “.I just got back from your part of the country to find your letter. Didn’t see anyone down there. Went from the lab to my apartment back and forth and came home the moment I was finished. I didn’t have anything to do with picking a composer. Hans Eisler wrote the music after Sillvestre Revueltas died. I haven’t even heard it. I think the film is pretty good but of course can’t tell until it is all finished and music and words set on the film. This is a crazy time and I feel pretty much the same. Too much rather than too little information. And it doesn’t seem to mirror the total of our knowledge a bit. Are you still working for Charley Chaplin He has been away a long time now. And I have heard one group say The Great Dictator is a failure and another that it is a great success. Which do you think is true. I’m going to work now on the Gulf book Sea of Cortez. Hope to have it ready by summer. It is going to be very hard work but of a kind I like and trust particularly now precise work in which the information does not pass through any censorship bureau.Haven’t been to Monterey for quite a while but Carol Steinbeck has. The recipient Edmund Wilson was an American literary critic and progenitor of the Library of America publication series. His critical works helped foster public appreciation for many of the foremost American writers of the 20th century including F. Scott Fitzgerald Ernest Hemingway John Dos Passos and William Faulkner. Steinbeck's inscription refers in jest to Wilson's harsh critique of his work in his 1941 publication The Boys in the Back Room: Notes on California Novelists. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. An exceptional association linking these two great American men of letters. Steinbeck was commissioned to write the present volume by the United States Army Forces as part of an effort to increase Air Force recruitment and morale. In order to write the book Steinbeck traveled more than 20000 miles in 30 days visiting dozens of training corps and flying fields with John Swopes himself a flier who took the 60 photographs that illustrate the book documenting the various jobs needed to form a bombing team. All royalties of the author and photographer as well as publishing profits were endowed to the perpetual Air Forces Aid Society Trust Fund to provide emergency aid for the families of fliers lost in the line of duty. Price clipped dust jacket in shades of yellow grey and orange with black lettering on both front and back for author and title as well as on spine.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is in fine condition with perfect corners and hinges only issue is a neat prior owner name inked in small lettering on the top of the front free endpaper. A 12mo of 7 3/8 by 4 3/4 inches with soiling around the edges of the boards and in the gutters. The spine is also slanted and there is small spots at the top edge of the text block. In a very good- dust jacket with a missing front flap and part of the front fold and with rubbing and wear to the ends of the spine area. 208 pages of text followed by a one page listing of other books by Steinbeck. Softcover. <br/><br/> Advance copy an uncorrected galley proof bound in plain unprinted tannish wrappers printed on rectos only a very scarce advanced state of this minor or not so minor Steinbeck masterpiece whose themes of death and loneliness are masked by its surface layer of humor all the more rare in that this is an Author Presentation Copy Inscribed by Steinbeck to the best man at his second marriage Howard O. Hunter who was the Works Progress Administration WPA commissioner in the early 1940s under the FDR administration Steinbeck and his second wife Gwen Conger were married March 29 1943 just 11 days after receiving his final divorce decree from his first wife Carol Steinbeck has Inscribed the first preliminary as follows "For Howard/who really/belongs in/Cannery Row/John Steinbeck/last night in New York 1944" this galley lacks all the preliminaries found in the 1945 published version such as half titles title page copyright page dedication page etc. although not specifically cited in Goldstone & Payne there is a notation under G&P A22a that "a copy of the unrevised galley proofs is in the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas" see Morrow 172 that copy with a yellow label on front giving publication date and price that is not on this copy--the Morrow copy was not signed or inscribed now housed in a beautiful custom clamshell case with leather spine laid in loosely is a letter of provenance from Ellen Leonard who was given this proof by Hunter's wife Edna. This was bound for in-house use by Viking and not for sale thus it was never meant to be in great condition even when new spine ends are chipped there is offsetting from printed pages onto the previous verso some pages are becoming dis-bound. hardcover books

New York: The Viking Press 1945 First edition advance issue in the publisher's blue wrappers. An excellent copy with only some minor fading to spine else fine. Cannery Row is a Depression-era novel set in Monterey California. The plot takes place on a grungy street with "the gathered and scattered tin and iron and rust and splintered wood chipped pavement and weedy lots junk heaps sardine canneries of corrugated iron honky tonks restaurants and whore houses and little crowded groceries and laboratories and flophouses." The actual street in Monterey has since been renamed "Cannery Row" in honor of this iconic novel. The plot features an unlikely cast of characters including a marine biologist a grocer a restaurateur and a group of local vagabonds. Cannery Row is exemplar of Steinbeck's talent for making even the most unsavory characters relatable and endearing; Mack and his group of homeless squatters are described as "gentlemen and philosophers united by a common dislike of a steady job and a mutual feeling for the pleasures of living according to their lights." Much of the inspiration for this novel and its 1954 sequel Sweet Thursday were drawn from the author's own life; Steinbeck was born in Monterey County grew up knowing fishermen and other laborers and was close friends with a marine biologist Ed Ricketts who worked on the real Cannery Row.
