‎Magnes, J.L. (Judah)‎

‎LIKE ALL THE NATIONS?‎

‎1st edition. Original Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 77 pages. "'Can we establish our life here,' he asked in his 1930 pamphlet Like All the Nation? 'not upon the basis of force and power, but upon that of human solidarity and understanding?' His tireless pursuit of a cooperative relationship between Jews and Arabs was a manifestation of his philosophy of life; his effort on behalf of the binational plan stands as one in a series of efforts by him to change Jewish public life in both American and Mandatory Palestine" (Kotzin, 2010). In this pamphlet, Magnes includes his essay with the pamphlet's title, as well as his recent New York Times article and Philby's plan. He also republishes his 1921 letter to the editor of the London Jewish Chronicle in which he claims that redemption would come to the Jews only if they stop infringing on Arab national aspirations in Palestine. He placed this article in the pamphlet, he says, "to show that my present attitude is not new, and that it is the result of a view of life and a conception of the ethical function of Judaism and does not just spring from tactical or strategic motives." Finally, he also includes an English translation of Ahad Ha-Am's 1921 Preface to a new edition of his works. Important. Light wear & stains to cover, Very Good Condition. (zion-9-1) xx‎

‎MARAT - 3 PAMPHLETS CONCERNANT MARAT‎

‎MARVELL Andrew‎

‎The Works of Andrew Marvell. Poetical, Controversial and Political, containing many Original Letters, Poems, and Tracts, never Before Printed. With a New Life of the Author, by Capt. Edward Thompson.‎

‎3 vols., 4to., Sole Edition thus, with an engraved portrait frontispiece and an engraved portrait, some moderate (but largely marginal) damp-marking to first volume; second and third volumes in contemporary full calf, backs with five raised bands, neatly rebacked in calf to style, first volume in modern full calf to style, new leather labels gilt, a very good, crisp, firm set . With the list of subscribers, and additional list of subscribers, together totalling only some 170 names including those of Daines Barrington (friend, correspondent of Gilbert White) Edmund Burke, David Garrick and General Charles Lee. The list of subscribers in interesting; excluding the nobility the list demonstrates a wide coverage of the social and professional classes, and six women are listed which seems a healthy proportion for the period. One subscriber's name, that of 'Estcourt Cheswell' has the surname neatly amended in a contemporary hand to read 'Creswell'. Although there are no other indications as to individual ownership, this may have been his copy. As late as 1791 Creswell was a freeholder of the county of Gloucestershire resident near Cirencester. Marvell's 'Works', containing Poems, Satires and a few Letters, were first edited by Cooke (2 vols., 1726; reprinted 1772). To these are now added the Prose Works, further Letters, including those to the Corporation of Hull (which Marvell represented in Parliament) and the majority of his pamphlets. Thompson's 'Life' appears here for the first time. The most complete early collection of Marvell's poetry and prose, elegantly and clearly printed and with broad margins. CBEL: I, p.460.‎

‎The Advantages of an Alliance with the Great Mogul: In which are principally considered Three Points of the highest Importance to the British Nation. I. The immediate Preservation and future Prosperity of the highest Importance to the British Nation. II. The legal Acquisition of an immediate Revenue to Great Britain. III. The promoting of a vast Increase in the Exports of British Manufacture.‎

‎First edition, half-title, [4], 99, [1]pp., disbound, half-title detached. A former officer in the East India Company's armies and Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's Forces, Major John Morrison, returned to Britain in 1772 styled as 'Commander in Chief of the Great Mogul's forces'. Morrison was regarded as a traitor by the East India Company but he did succeed in publishing a pamphlet entitled "The Advantage of an Alliance with the Great Mogul" in 1774. Positioning himself alongside advocates of direct Crown control over Indian territories, Morrison suggested that Shah Alam II would be willing to cede Bengal to George III. The emperor's rough treatment at the hands of the Company, especially the non-payment of tribute, was lambasted as 'a dishonourable blow to the law of nations'. A proper agreement between kings would restore 'the stability and dignity of regal government', and replace 'the fluctuating and unsteady resolve of a Company of private men'.
