Although trained in the legal profession he married an actress and with his wife joined the Comedie-Francaise in 1685. He wrote over 50 plays many of them one-act as in this volume. He was especially adept at writing sprightly satirical pieces with a contemporary flavor. The plays in the volume are: 'Le Joueur' publication date of 1699 - but the remaining five plays have a publication date of 1705 'Les Fees' 'L'Operateur Barry' 'Le Retour des Officiers' 'La Matrone D'Ephese' and 'Je Vous Prens Sans Verd'. ‎L’année même où il entra au théâtre comme acteur, Dancourt (1661-1725) fit jouer sa première comédie, le Notaire obligeant ou les Fonds perdus. Elle réussit et, dès lors, l’auteur produisit avec une fécondité extrême, entre 1683 et l’année de sa mort, plus de 80 comédies, dont le succès malgré la bienveillance du public à son égard, fut loin d’être toujours le même. La plupart de ses œuvres seront jouées tout au long du XVIIIe siècle. Dancourt exploitant habilement à la scène les aventures piquantes de l’époque, la chronique scandaleuse de la ville et de la cour, plus d’un spectateur pouvait craindre de se reconnaître sur la scène. On peut dire que Dancourt a créé le genre villageois : il a su retracer avec une grande fidélité la malice et la naïveté des paysans. Il a pareillement peint d’une manière vraie les chevaliers d’industrie et les femmes d’intrigue. Son chef-d’œuvre est le Chevalier à la mode, en cinq actes, en prose (1687). Les autres pièces de Dancourt les mieux réussies sont le Mari retrouvé (1698) ; les Bourgeoises de qualité (1700) ; les Trois cousines (1700) ; le Galant jardinier (1704). On cite encore : la Désolation des Joueuses (1687) ; les Vendanges de Suresnes (1694) ; le Divertissement de Sceaux (1705) ; le Diable boiteux (1707) ; la Comédie des comédiens (1710), etc. La Folle enchère (1690) lui a été attribuée : elle fut jouée sous son nom et il en perçut les droits, puis elle fut reproduite dans ses Œuvres Complètes en 1760. Néanmoins, elle est l'œuvre de Mme Ulrich dont il était l'amant.‎
