A l'aube du XVeme siecle, Philippe le Hardi, premier duc de Bourgogne, jette les premieres bases de ce qui allait devenir une bibliotheque d'exception. Transmise a ses successeurs, elle fera la fierte de Jean sans Peur, Philippe le Bon puis Charles le Temeraire. La bibliophilie devient affaire de famille: tous auront peu ou prou le souci d'accroitre cette collection, miroir prestigieux de la puissance de l'Etat bourguignon. Puissant, certes, mais vulnerable: la mort de l'ambitieux Charles le Temeraire suite au desastre de Nancy, en 1477, vient bouleverser le destin des Pays-Bas meridionaux. Le dernier duc de Bourgogne laisse derriere lui une librairie dont le nombre de pieces avoisine le millier. Qui trop embrasse mal etreint, dit-on. L'adage ne vaut pourtant pas pour la collection bourguignonne, dont le nombre n'a d'egal que la qualite des pieces conservees. Et pour cause: bien des artistes, des copistes, des auteurs et des traducteurs de renom ont consacre leurs talents a l'enrichissement de "la librairie de mondit seigneur". Sur le millier de volumes recenses a la mort du Temeraire, environ 300 codices sont aujourd'hui conserves a la Section des Manuscrits de la Bibliotheque royale de Belgique. La serie consacree a la "Librairie des ducs de Bourgogne" regroupera, selon un classement typologique des textes, l'ensemble de ces manuscrits repartis en six volumes. Chaque livre est accompagne d'une publication numerique (Cd-Rom) qui propose a l'utilisateur une banque de donnees iconographiques de pres de 1000 images par Cd-Rom. Paru en 2000, le premier tome de la serie "Librairie des ducs de Bourgogne" (LDB-I) etait consacre aux textes liturgiques, ascetiques, theologiques, philosophiques et moraux. Les manuscrits didactiques ont ete traites dans le deuxieme volume, edite en 2003. Le present volume (LDB-III) reprend les textes litteraires: s'y retrouvent des ?uvres telles que l'Histoire de Charles Martel de David Aubert, la Belle Helene de Constantinople de Jean Wauquelin, de nombreux textes de Christine de Pizan (L'Epitre d'Othea, le Livre des faits d'armes et de chevalerie, la Cite des dames, l'Avision Christine, le Livre des trois vertus, le Chemin de Longue estude, le Debat des deux amants, le Livre de mutacion de fortune) ou encore l'Histoire des Seigneurs de Gavre, le Roman de Gerard de Nevers et le Roman des sept sages de Rome. Seront traites, dans les prochaines parutions, les textes historiques (LDB-IV) et les textes hagiographiques, bibliques et classiques (LDB-V). Le dernier volume reprendra en outre un index des manuscrits et incunables cites et un index iconographique (plus de 3000 occurences), une liste des incipits, differents index onomastiques, un index des oeuvres ainsi qu'une bibliographie generale et cumulative. BAMBURGH CASTLE LIBRARY.
A Catalogue of the Library at Bamburgh Castle, in the County of Northumberland, divided into three alphabetical parts. I. English: II. Latin and other antient languages. III. French and other modern languages. With a table of references to each. Published by order of the trustees of the estates of the right honourable Nathaniel late Lord Crewe, and Lord Bishop of Durham.
4to (255 x 220 mm), [120]pp., interleaved with blank pages, cont. quarter calf, marbled boards, vellum tips, upper joint cracked, spine rubbed but still a very good copy. The Bamburghe Castle Library was collected by three generations of the Sharp family, beginning with John Sharp, Archbishop of York (1644-1714), who had been collecting books from about 1660. The Sharp family were also successively Trustees of Lord Crewe's Charity and curates of Bamburgh. Nathaniel, Lord Crewe, Bishop of Durham, had purchased Bamburgh Castle in the early eighteenth century. One of the result of the bequests made by Lord Crewe was the purchase in 1779 of the library of Thomas Sharp (1725-72) to form the nucleus of a library for the use of the alternating resident Trustees. This rare first catalogue of the library at Bamburgh Castle was prompted by the gift of the library of John Sharp (1723-92) Archdeacon and Prebenary of Durham which was added to the collections formed by his brother Thomas and earlier members of the family. The bequest was made on the understanding that the library was to remain at Bamburgh Castle. Indeed, it remained there until 1958, when it was deposited with the university library in Durham.
