Page 139/140 Where Ward's Productions With Calvert Is Turned Down At A Corner By Bancroft. In 1872 He Built A Spectacular Set For The Triumphal Entry Of The King Into London In Henry V. The Production Was Carried Through The United States And Into Australia. In New York More Than 100000 People Visited Booth's Theatre To See The Play. As A Landscape Painter He Sketched And Painted In Italy France Belgium And Germany. Alfred Was An Art Critic For The Manchester Guardian And From 1874 To 1905 He Was An Art Critic For The Courier. Catalogue of Ninety-One Manuscripts on Vellum, Illuminated by English (Anglo-Saxon), Byzantine, French, Flemish, Dutch, Burgundian, German, Italian and Spanish Artists, of the VIIth to the XVIIth Century, Chiefly from the Famous Hamilton Collection, and till Lately in the Possession of the Royal Museum of Berlin. Which will be Sold by Auction by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, on Thursday, the 23rd day of May, 1889.
4to (270 x 175 mm), viii, 79pp., orig. printed wrappers spotted, spine chipped, 91 lots. The Duke of Hamilton had collected a remarkable series of mediaeval manuscripts, mainly illuminated, at an early age. This collection was purchased, for ?70,000, by the Prussian government. Because of the high cost of the collection, it was decided to sell a portion of it, hence this memorable sale which included the purple vellum codex of the Gospels presented by Henry VIII to Pope Leo X; it was bought by Quaritch for ?1500, sold to Theodore Irwin, of Oswego, and re-sold, in 1900, to Mr Pierpont Morgan.

624 pp., full-color, ISBN 9789490128180. In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op Perkament' staat de vraag centraal: waarom vertonen laatmiddeleeuwse boeken zo vaak sporen van pelgrimstekens? Op basis van een honderdtwintigtal boeken, grotendeels ongepubliceerd materiaal, wordt een nieuwe blik geworpen op de functie die bedevaartssouvenirs en religieuze boeken vervulden in het dagelijks leven. Boeken zijn bewaarplaatsen voor allerlei aandenkens, ook in de late Middeleeuwen. Bezitters naaiden bedevaartssouvenirs aan het perkament van religieuze boeken. Verluchters schilderden pelgrimstekens en andere devotionalia in de marges, zo waarheidsgetrouw dat het lijkt alsof ze daar zijn ingenaaid. De middeleeuwse boeken worden nu bewonderd om hun schoonheid, maar ze hadden ook een praktisch nut als instrument dat het lichamelijk en geestelijk welzijn van de eigenaar moest waarborgen. Boeken met ingenaaide bedevaartssouvenirs laten zien hoe de bezitter het boek gebruikte, welke teksten hij het meest las, maar ook wie pelgrimstekens verzamelde. De nageschilderde pelgrimstekens die vooral in rijk verluchte, kostbare manuscripten zijn afgebeeld, vullen de kennis over de originele insignes aan. De margemotieven vervulden in het boek vooral een decoratieve en structurerende rol. Daaraan kon de verluchter desgewenst een extra betekenis toevoegen door een relatie te leggen met de omlijste tekst of miniatuur. In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op perkament' wordt de betekenis van bedevaartssouvenirs belicht aan de hand van de boeken waarin ze verschijnen.
