De catalogus wordt ingeleid door een aantal artikelen van Geert van Daal als verzamelaar, van Jan Storm van Leeuwen als boekbandkenner, van Henk ten Bohmer als, ten tijde van het schrijven van het boek, voorzitter van Stichting Boekbehoud, en van Leo Kerssemakers als bezorger van het werk. Vijftien hoofdstukken worden ingeleid door begeleidende artikelen van Kerssemakers waarin wordt verwezen naar belangrijke en opvallende banden. Waar van toepassing zijn anekdotes opgenomen van Van Daal over de aanschaf van diverse banden, hierdoor krijgt de lezer een goed beeld over hoe het daarbij soms kan verkeren.
