The Exploitation of Plant Resources in Ancient Africa
The Exploitation of Plant Resources in Ancient Africa Edizione Inglese di Marijke Van Der Veen (a cura di) Editore: Springer US EAN: 9781441933164 ISBN: 1441933166 Pagine: 300 Formato: Paperback This volume presents a completely new and very substantial body of information about the origin of agriculture and plant use in Africa. All the evidence is very recent and for the first time all this archaeobotanical evidence is brought together in one volume (at present the information is unpublished or published in many disparate journals, confer ence reports, monographs, site reports, etc. ). Early publications concerned with the origins of African plant domestication relied almost exclusively on inferences made from the modem distribution of the wild progenitors of African cultivars; there existed virtually no archaeobotanical data at that time. Even as recently as the early 1990s direct evidence for the transition to farming and the relative roles of indigenous versus Near Eastern crops was lacking for most of Africa. This volume changes that and presents a wide range of ex citing new evidence, including case studies from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, Egypt, and Sudan, which range in date from 8000 BP to the present day. The volume ad dresses topics such as the role of wild plant resources in hunter-gatherer and farming com munities, the origins of agriculture, the agricultural foundation of complex societies, long-distance trade, the exchange of foods and crops, and the human impact on local vege tation-all key issues of current research in archaeology, anthropology, agronomy, ecol ogy, and economic history.

Beyond the Citadel - The Complete Trilogy *Signed By Author*
656 pages. Author's signature upon title page. At the close of a surgical operation, the surgeons take off their masks and talk about both profession-related and unrelated matters. In the same manner, this narrative novel, presented in trilogy fashion, takes the mask off the medical profession and its practicioners, both generalists and specialists. It presents many underlying secrets that are often not available to the lay public at large. The protaganist, a Canadian surgeon, is revealed in both his professional and private life, his avocations and romances, his family life, challenges, triumphs and defeats. Minor wrinkle to bottom edge of illustrated front cover else virtually as new. Excellent copy. Book

Massie, Allan
Glasgow - Portraits of a City
135 pages including index. In this tribute to a city he loves, author provides both a history and a character study, describing Glasgow at different moments in time: the medieval city; the eighteenth-century expansion; the mid-Victorian heyday; the Edwardian sunset; the Depression of the 1930s; post-war decline; the renaissance of the 1980s. Examines the economic function of the city at each of these periods, drawing attention to characteristic architecture and to representative individuals, posing questions about the relation of Glasgow to the rest of Scotland, and exploring the paradox that Europe's City of Culture should have owed its wealth to its trade with the New World, and should be arguably the easternmost American city. Illustrated with black and white colour plates. Gift inscription upon half-title page else unmarked. Minimal wear. Excellent copy. Book

McCaffrey, Anne
The People of Pern
151 pages. Artist Robin Wood met Anne McCaffrey at the first totally Pern-oriented convention in the U.S. in 1984. However, prior to that, Robin had designed and executed portraits of Pern characters for the Mayfair Games board game, Dragonriders of Pern. In the ensuing conversation about what the characters from the Pern books really looked like, this book was conceived. Four years of work followed, with Robin and Anne comparing notes at conventions, discussing details of Pern and its people, passing letters and sketches across the Atlantic and arriving at mutually satisfactory conclusions. This represents the first, authentic look at the people of Pern, a collaboration of the finest kind between two of the finest artists available today. Very attractively illustrated glossy dust jacket in wonderful condition with minimal signs of rubbing at top and bottom edges and 3/4" tear to top of back panel. Book could pass as new. A superior copy of this enchanting work. Book
