After he had analyzed gases in the blood he found that there was a higher concentration of oxygen in the blood flowing in arteries than that flowing in the veins thus being the "First quantitative analysis of the blood gases" Garrison & Morton No. 929.<br><br>"In this paper Magnus determines that the oxygen nitrogen and carbon dioxide content of the arterial and venous blood of horses. He introduces blood into mercury in a funnel and by repeatedly applying nergative pressure he liberates the gases from the blood. The mercury seal maintains the anaerobic conditions when transferring the gases to a eudiometer for analysis. Magnus finds a positive arterio-venous difference for oxygen and a negative difference for carbon dioxide. rom this he concludes that carbon dioxide is added not in the lungs but during circulation. he also calculates the balance of carbon dioxide assuming values for the cardiac output and carbon dioxide elimination and the measured arterio-venous difference. Tegen een interviewer beweerde Bakker begin jaren zesti: 'men gelooft het niet, maar eigenlijk ben ik zeer verlegen'. Men geloofde het inderdaad niet, want Bakker heeft die verlegenheid voor iedereen verborgen weten te houden. De interviews die Ad Fransen voor dit nummer heeft gehouden met mensen die Bakker nog hebben gekend, gaf hij als titel mee; 'Een varken dat van Bach hield'. Bakker wordt met Geert Lubberhuizen van De Bezige Bij en Geert van Oorschot gezien als een van de belangrijke vernieuwers van het naoorlogse boekenvak die een blijvende invloed hebben uitgeoefend op het uitgeversvak. De branche liet er een onblusbaar debat aan voorafgaan, dat een dubbele missie in het hart droeg. Hoe konden uitgevers onrendabele maar cultureel waardevolle titels garanderen? En hoe kon het assortiment in de boekhandel van 'hoog niveau' blijven? Zij zijn niet van Jeremia onderzoekt de in de woordentwist ogenschijnlijk verloren geraakte geloofsbrieven waarop deze opdracht is gebaseerd: dat er hoog niveau geleverd wordt, waarvan kopers door brede mediavoorlichting kennis kunnen nemen. Er verschijnen tegenwoordig dermate veel titels, dat een groot deel niet eens kan worden opgemerkt. Door zogeheten opschoningsacties, voorbij het vagevuur van de ramsj, verdwijnen ze dan ook na een minimale termijn. Die maalstroom bevestigt op cynische wijze de idee van de cultuurgeschiedenis als survival of the fittest. En men doet in de zendingsijver alles om te overleven: in een Eend kruipen, Zwarte Beertjes promoten bij chocoladerepen waarop ooit een olifantje blonk. In hoeverre valt in zo'n actualiteit de auteur van een immer 'veelgeprezen' boek te vergelijken met een levende pion in een schaakspel? Marc Kregting volgt in Zij zijn niet van Jeremia het traject van bellettrie bij concernuitgevers en mediaconcerns. Met name non-fictie en romans floreren in een klimaat dat politiek is geworden, met fusies en kleinschaligheid en met debatten over normen. Afzet, wekelijks te raadplegen in zo'n dertig verschillende toptienen, moet het bewijs van soevereine 'inhoud' zijn. Wel ensceneert men non-stop nagepapegaaide kwaliteitsoordelen, waarvan de bron onvindbaar is. De vraag rijst, wat al die blijde boodschappen voor het nageslacht netto opbrengen.‎
