‎Sehr gutes Ex. - Reimpression de l'edition de Paris, 1961. - References 4. - C'est un débat toujours ouvert de savoir si Balzac fut un artiste intelligent et s'il a eu ou n'a pas eu, une pensée esthétique. Ses contemporains s'étaient déjà posé cette question, et bon nombre d'entre eux y avaient répondu par la négative. Pour n'en citer que deux exemples, pris chez deux artistes dont l'attitude à l'égard de Balzac a été toute différente, Sainte-Beuve et George Sand, nous voyons l'un, prenant état d'un passage de la Cousine Bette, qu'il interprète mal - volontairement peut-être - où Balzac semble dire que l'artiste doit se précipiter dans son ?uvre les yeux fermés, déclarer : " De telles allures de talent impliquent bien de la verve et de la fougue, mais aussi du hasard, et beaucoup de fumée " ; George Sand de son côté, qui pourtant manifeste d'autre part la plus grande admiration pour Balzac, dont elle fait un de ses maîtres, avant même qu'il ait été célèbre, tient des propos presque semblables : c On lui a reproché d'être sans principes, parce qu'en somme il a été, selon moi, sans convictions absolues sur les questions de fait dans la religion, dans l'art, dans la politique, dans l'amour même ". Cependant, il faut remarquer l'expression " sur les questions de fait ", qui peut laisser penser que dans la théorie, Balzac avait des croyances mieux établies ; Sand paraît suggérer que si la fin était pure, les moyens l'étaient moins ; elle, rejoint en somme la pensée d'auteurs que nous allons voir dénier à Balzac le sens de l'art. Le plus représentatif en est Flaubert. Sans doute admira-t-il certains aspects de Balzac ; sans doute même a-t-il désiré le connaître et a-t-il été touché de sa mort ; sans doute le plaint-il d'avoir été un forçat littéraire ; mais la lecture de sa Correspondance le déçoit : " Mais quelle préoccupation de l'argent ! et comme il s'inquiète peu de l'art ! Pas une fois il n'en parle ! Il ambitionnait la Gloire, mais non le Beau !... " ; ailleurs encore comparant ses lettres à celles de Voltaire et de Diderot : " Balzac ne s'inquiète ni de l'art, ni de la religion, ni de l'humanité, ni de la science. Lui et toujours lui... " Zola, peu d'années après Flaubert, tout en voulant bien admettre que Balzac n'a pas eu " l'inconscience de son oeuvre ", n'hésite pourtant pas à affirmer que ses doctrines littéraires ne lui semblent pas d'une grande clarté : " Il risque théorie sur théorie, il prend feu sur chaque idée et part de là pour régir le monde ; mais, lorsqu'on examine tout cela de près, on se trouve perdu dans un pêle-mêle inextricable. " II est vrai que Balzac n'a pas la chance d'être, selon Zola, un romancier absolument naturaliste, ce qui est impardonnable. La critique universitaire, du moins celle du début du xx* siècle, n'est pas plus bienveillante. Brunetière traite de " galimatias prétentieux " les préfaces de Félix Davin et la lettre fameuse à Mm* Hanska de novembre 1834 sur la construction des Etudes de m?urs et des Etudes philosophiques, et déclare que les " Parents pauvres et Eugénie Grandet ne procèdent en vérité, d'aucun système d'art ". Quant à Faguet, il est catégorique : " Ses idées littéraires n'ont jamais eu un caractère assez accusé pour qu'on puisse répondre à cette question : quelle était l'esthétique de Balzac?". Une telle attitude a persisté jusqu'aujourd'hui. On avertit, dans une étude consacrée à l'esthétique de Balzac, que le lecteur ne doit pas s'attendre " à trouver dans les réflexions de Balzac une esthétique développée en système ", et que Balzac ? guère développé " d'esthétique cohérente entre 1829 et 1847 ". Jusque dans le Livre du Centenaire, G. Lecomte, se demandant s'il y a un art du roman chez Balzac, répond ainsi : " II y a une activité qui se déploie, indifférente à l'ordre et à la mesure, une fécondité capricieuse dont les effets à peine conscients peuvent aussi bien donner l'impression de résultats imparfaits que s'inspirer de profondes et heureuses méditations ". G. Picon, pour être un peu plus affirmatif, n'en demeure pas moins réservé : il admet l'existence chez Balzac des grandes lignes d'une esthétique, mais dont les principes " demeurent assez vagues et n'ont rien d'impérieux ". Un refus aussi longtemps maintenu et venant de personnalités aussi diverses, ne laissait pas d'être inquiétant et de faire effectivement douter de l'existence d'une esthétique balzacienne.
