Déjà en 1819 il écrivait à sa sÂœur : « Si je suis un gaillard . je puis avoir encore autre chose que la gloire littéraire il est beau d'être un grand homme et un grand citoyen. » La modification des conditions d'éligibilité offre au démiurge l'occasion de participer à l'écriture de la grande Histoire. Balzac « sur les traces de son modèle Chateaubriand veut cumuler les fonctions de penseur et d'acteur du politique » cf. P. Baudouin in Balzac et le politique. La maturation de cette ambition se fait au travers des Lettres sur Paris 19 articles publiés dans Le Voleur entre septembre 1830 et mars 1831 et se concluant sur la célèbre Enquête sur la politique des deux ministères. Jamais signés ces articles constituent la plus importante réflexion politique de Balzac et ont suscité à ce titre de très nombreuses études et commentaires. Chacune des Lettres est symboliquement adressée à un destinataire désigné uniquement par son initiale et sa ville. S'ils furent longtemps considérés comme fictifs la plupart d'entre eux sont aujourd'hui identifiés notamment parmi les proches de l'auteur et des personnalités politiques influentes. Ainsi c'est à la suite de la Lettre XVI du 26 février 1831 qui lui est adressée que son ami Samuel Henry Berthoud suggère à Balzac de se présenter dans sa commune. Enthousiasmé par ce projet Balzac annonce officiellement sa candidature dans la Lettre du 15 mars puis toujours sur les conseils de Berthoud adresse la Lettre XIX du 29 mars à M. L à Cambrai astéronyme derrière lequel doit se reconnaitre l'avocat Henry Leroy dont Balzac espère obtenir un soutien cambraisien décisif. Les principaux espoirs politiques de Balzac se portent en effet sur Cambrai dont il tente de séduire les élites tandis que Berthoud rédacteur en chef de la Gazette de Cambrai assure sa promotion et sa popularité auprès du peuple : « M. de Balzac n'est point seulement un écrivain célèbre il est plus encore peut-être un publiciste profond. Il ne faut citer à l'appui de cette assertion que les Lettres sur Paris publiées dans Le voleur et dans lesquelles on remarque un jugement si sûr une précision si lucide . En outre M. de Balzac s'occupe d'une publication de politique populaire qui doit contribuer puissamment à répandre parmi les classes pauvres l'instruction et mieux encore : les idées saines. » Ce faisant le journaliste écrivait à son ami et champion : « Hâtez-vous . de venir à Cambrai. Nous ferons aller la grosse caisse et la Société d'émulation servira d'instrument. » C'est donc naturellement auprès d'Henry Leroy président de cette influente Société d'émulation que Balzac devenu membre correspondant déploie ses charmes. S'enquérant auprès de Berthoud de l'« espèce d'ouvrage politique qui pourrait appuyer sa candidature à Cambrai » Balzac choisit étrangement cette édition des Scènes de la vie privée pourtant très peu « politique » qu'il offre à Henry Leroy par l'intermédiaire de son ami. En témoigne la lettre de remerciement que lui adresse l'avocat le 7 mai 1831 : « M. Berthoud m'a fait remettre de votre part deux volumes des Scènes de la vie privée. . je me félicite . d'en devoir la possession à son auteur que tout le monde s'accorde à placer au rang des meilleurs écrivains ». Dès le 19 mars Berthoud annonçait dans sa Gazette le don de deux ouvrages de Balzac à la Société d'émulation les Scènes de la vie privée et Physiologie du mariage. La missive de Leroy semble modérer cette information puisqu'il ne remercie l'auteur que pour les Scènes. Balzac « électeur éligible » comme il se plaisait à se présenter durant sa campagne n'obtiendra aucun siège et moins de deux mois après avoir annoncé publiquement ses ambitions il se retire de la course. Malgré les éloges médiatiques de quelques inconditionnels partisans du grand homme dont Le Voleur L'Avenir ou la Revue encyclopédique qui prédisent à l'auteur un grand avenir politique ou encore de La Mode qui ne craint pas de le poser en successeur de Chateaubriand « digne d'allier les deux titres d'écrivain et d'homme d'État » 30 avril 1831 l'éphémère parcours politique de Balzac se solda par un cuisant échec. Fustigeant à part égale les châtelains légitimistes dont il se réclame pourtant et le peuple républicain - qu'il célèbre par ailleurs en affirmant connaître les attentes « de la partie solide de la nation celle qui laboure qui travaille » - Balzac se révèle un piètre politicien. Il n'abandonnera pourtant jamais ses espoirs et subira de nouveaux revers en 1832 et en 1848 car comme le note Stefan Zweig dans sa biographie le romancier s'est toujours trouvé « dans la politique pratique - comme dans les affaires - du mauvais côté ». Cependant au-delà du constat d'échec ce premier épisode détermine autant qu'il révèle la complexité de la relation de Balzac à la politique qui se caractérise par une subordination du politique au littéraire. Dans Balzac et le politique Boris Lyon-Caen relève l'évidente « polyphonie littéraire » des Lettres sur Paris tandis que Pierre Laforgue soupçonne une élaboration très précoce contemporaine de cette première aventure électorale des Scènes de la vie politique qui ne paraîtront qu'en 1842 mais qui hantent l'Âœuvre depuis 1830. Enfin Pierre Barbéris met l'accent sur l'importance déterminante sur l'Âœuvre balzacienne de la désillusion de 1831. Quelles que soient ses déclarations d'allégeance ultérieures Balzac dès 1831 ne peut plus être un acteur politique. En effet l'exhaustive Comédie Humaine qu'il élabore se nourrissant des échecs de l'homme absorbera toutes les formes d'actions politiques et les velléités partisanes de son auteur. Ainsi de cet article de 1832 intitulé Du gouvernement moderne qui se mue en l'un de ses chefs d'Âœuvre : Le Médecin de campagne. Or en choisissant ses Scènes de la vie privée comme « ouvrage politique » pour appuyer sa candidature auprès de Leroy Balzac témoigne dès l'aube de son engagement de la prédominance de son Âœuvre littéraire sur ses aspirations personnelles. Nul doute que le destinataire ne pouvait rien lire de politique dans cette Âœuvre totalisante car comme l'écrira lui-même bientôt Balzac dans Louis Lambert : « La politique est une science sans principes arrêtés sans fixité possible ; elle est le génie du moment l'application constante de la force suivant la nécessité du jour. » Pour découvrir dans ces Scènes un engagement politique plus vaste que ses ambitions électorales il eut fallu que ce notable de Cambrai eut la perspicacité de Victor Hugo qui aux funérailles de Balzac déclarera : « À son insu qu'il le veuille ou non qu'il y consente ou non l'auteur de cette Âœuvre immense et étrange est de la forte race des écrivains révolutionnaires. » Remarquable exemplaire portant un précieux envoi autographe dans une élégante reliure du temps.  Mame et Delaunay-Vallée|& Levavasseur unknown‎
