Après un voyage de six semaines dans la capitale anglaise, l'auteur livre ses impressions sur le peuple londonien, la vie des habitants, les coteries, la police, la religion, les beaux-arts mais aussi « l'antipathie des Anglois pour les François » ou leur goût pour la mélancolie... Membre de l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, l'historien troyen Pierre-Jean Grosley (1718-1785) a laissé plusieurs relations de voyages (Italie, Hollande) et collaboré aux volumes IV et XIV de l'Encyclopédie. ‎Edition originale, illustrée d’un grand plan dépliant de Londres (487 x 331 mm). Il s’agit de la relation de voyage qui se présente comme un recueil de choses vues par un voyageur bien disposé. Six semaines de voyage suffirent à l’auteur pour dresser un portrait vivant de la capitale anglaise, en s’attardant sur la police, le peuple de Londres (et son « antipathie pour les François »), la vie des Londoniens, le commerce, les coteries » ou clubs. Selon Boucher de la Richarderie, «Le Vovage deGrosleyest l'un des mieux faits, à beaucoup d'égards». Son éloge du libéralisme anglais fut cependant sujet à polémiques. Pierre-Jean Grosley (Troyes, 1718-1785), historien, personnalité cosmopolite qui rédigea plusieurs relations de voyages (Italie, Hollande), collabora aux volumes IV et XIV de l’Encyclopédie. Elu à l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres en 1761, il consacra la fin de sa vie à ses Mémoires et à des travaux d’histoire locale troyenne. Bel exemplaire en veau porphyre de l'époque.
