New York: Brentano's 1925. Raphaelson Samson. THE JAZZ SINGER. New York: Brentano's 1925. FIRST EDITION. A bright FINE copy in the rare original publisher's dust jacket which is VERY GOOD slightly chipped at the top of the spine and the back panel a little dust-soiled. A PRESENTATION COPY from the author to New York City's DRAMATISTS GUILD. A superb association: "For Dramatist's Guild/Samson Raphaelson/1977 51 years later." The Jazz Singer filmed by Warner Brothers in 1927 was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences; it brought about the rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Using the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system star Al Jolson sang a half-dozen songs making this the first true musical film as we think of it today. But its not just a major milestone in film history Samson Raphaelson's story is a powerful one; Jakie Rabinowitz who goes against the traditions of his orthodox Jewish family by singing popular songs in a beerhall is castigated by his synagogue cantor father and driven from home. Fast forward Jakie becomes Jack Robin a brilliant but tormented jazz singer. This story of an entertainer's hopes and dreams for a career coming into conflict with his culture and his faith is a classic and serves as the prototype for an entire genre. The first edition of THE JAZZ SINGER is virtually never found in its original dustjacket. Signed copies are exceptionally difficult to find and this association to The Dramatist's Guild is especially appealing. Samson Raphaelson died in 1983 after having won the lifetime achievement award from the Writer's Guild of America for his screenwriting. Among Samson Raphaelson's dozens of screen credits are such films as THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER 1939 SUSPICION 1943 directed by Alfred Hitchcock and HEAVEN CAN WAIT 1943. THE JAZZ SINGER is one of the more indispensable cornerstones for a "Literature Into Film" collection. . Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Fine/Very Good. Brentano's Hardcover
