Illustrated with six pages of copper engravings (including frontispiece). The engravings (apart from frontis) are presented as four engravings per page, and show artisans at work - printer at a press, winegrower, labourer, etc. Contemporary full leather binding. Spine with faded gilt, and a red label with gilt title. Mildly rubbed boards. Marbled endpapers. Very clean and fresh inside. 238 pages with a four page catalogue of other works from Librairie de Pierre Blanchard bound before the title page. 170 x 100 mm (6Ÿ x 4 inches). .‎

Vers 1880-1890. Collée sur une carte de montage rigide de couleur grise, avec le titre écrit en calligraphie. La photographie est en bon état, avec seulement de petites imperfections. La carte de montage est en bon état de propreté. Datant de cette période, il est difficile de faire la distinction entre un tirage à l'albumine et une photographie montée sur carte à la gélatine argentique. Nous penchons pour cette dernière. Les dimensions de la photographie sont de 210 mm x 155 mm. Le format du montage est de 33 mm x 245 mm.‎

‎An attractive photograph of the pillars inside the Mezquita de Córdoba (The mosque). By an unknown photographer. Circa 1880-1890. Pasted onto a stiff grey mounting card, with calligraphic title beneath ("Del inre af Kathedralen i Cordova"). It bears the number 8 in the negative, so may be a tourist photograph. The photograph is in good condition with a couple of small nicks to the edges. The mounting card is in good clean condition. Dating from this period, it is difficult to distinguish between and albumen print and an early silver gelatin card mounted photograph. We lean towards the latter. Photograph size is 220mm x 280mm. The mount size is 345mm x 410mm.‎

‎Photograph, Paris, May 1968: Hitler hides behind mask of Charles de Gaulle.‎

‎Paris NP 1968 Grande photographie argentique noir et blanc (40 cm x 29,5 cm) d'un mur de Paris en mai 1968. La photographie montre une affiche d'Hitler cachée derrière un masque de Charles de Gaulle, qui porte la Croix de Lorraine en guise de brassard. Ce dernier porte la Croix de Lorraine en guise de brassard (les forces françaises libres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, sous la direction de de Gaulle, avaient utilisé ce symbole). Le tout est épinglé sur un fond où l'on peut lire plusieurs fois « CRS SS ». Les CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) étaient la force de réserve nationale chargée de gérer les grèves et les manifestations. En fait, ce slogan remonte à 1948, date de la création des CRS. Le mur montre également une pancarte écrite à la main pour une manifestation dans la soirée du 19 à St Lazare. Les manifestations publiques étaient souvent (et sont encore souvent) organisées dans l'espace devant la gare St Lazare. Il s'agit très certainement d'un grand tirage d'un reportage ou d'une photographie de presse de l'époque. Au verso, on peut lire « 68 » à l'encre rouge. L'affiche centrale a été utilisée lors des émeutes étudiantes de 1968, et bien que nous n'ayons pas été en mesure de retrouver cette photographie, il existe un « fantôme internet » de celle-ci, qui indique qu'elle a été prise en mai 1968. L'état de l'affiche est excellent, elle ne présente aucune marque ou salissure significative.‎

‎A large (40 cm x 29.5cm) black and white silver print / silver gelatin photograph of a Paris wall in May 1968. The photograph shows a poster of Hitler hiding behind a mask of Charles de Gaulle. He is wearing the Cross of Lorraine as his armband. (The Free French forces in world war 2, under de Gaulle, had used this symbol). This is pinned over a background which states "CRS SS" multiple times. The CRS (compagnies républicaines de sécurité) was the National Reserve Force to deal with strikes and demonstrations. In fact this slogan dates back to 1948 when the CRS was first formed. The wall also shows a hand written sign for a manifestation in the evening of the 19th at St Lazare. Public demonstrations were often (and are still often) held in the space in front of the St Lazare station. This is almost certainly a large print of a reportage / press photograph of the time. In red ink to the reverse is written "68." The central poster was used in the 1968 student riots, and although we have been unable to trace this photograph, there is an "internet ghost" of it, which states it was taken in May 1968. Condition is excellent, with no significant marks or dirt to it. .‎

Collée sur un fond en papier gris, avec le titre en bas. Le papier gris présente quelques petites entailles et éraflures sur les bords. Le tirage est en excellent état. La photographie mesure 25 cm x 36,5 cm. La feuille mesure 30 cm x 41,5 cm. Le château de Chenonceau, souvent appelé le « château des dames », est un magnifique chef-d'uvre de la Renaissance du XVIe siècle situé dans la vallée de la Loire, en France, qui enjambe de manière unique le Cher sur une structure en forme de pont. Construit principalement entre 1514 et 1522 par Thomas Bohier et son épouse Catherine Briçonnet, il a remplacé une ancienne forteresse médiévale. Il est appelé le château des dames car ce sont des femmes qui ont façonné son héritage, notamment Diane de Poitiers, qui a ajouté le pont enjambant la rivière (1556-1559) et créé de vastes jardins, et Catherine de Médicis, qui a construit la grande galerie (1570-1576).‎

‎First edition. An attractive, original albumen photograph of the château de Chenonceau. Good, clean attractive print. Laid onto a grey paper background, with title to the bottom edge. The grey paper has a little nicking and chipping to the edges. The print is in excellent condition. The photograph is 25cm x 36.5cm. The sheet is 30cm x 41.5cm. The Château de Chenonceau, often called the "Ladies' Château," is a stunning 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece in France's Loire Valley, uniquely spanning the River Cher on a bridge-like structure. Built primarily between 1514 and 1522 by Thomas Bohier and his wife Catherine Briçonnet, it replaced an earlier medieval fortress. It is called the Ladies Château as successive women shaped its legacy, including Diane de Poitiers, who added the river-spanning bridge (15561559) and created extensive gardens, and Catherine de Médicis, who built the grand gallery (15701576). .‎

‎Paris Langlume et Peltier 1819 Une édition rare publiée par Langlume et Peltier. Il ne s'agit pas du livre, mais de 12 planches plus un titre gravé avec vignette. (Il manque donc une planche). Gumuchian 4641 présente la même version non colorée des planches que celle présentée ici. Édition ancienne, gravée avec un petit frontispice et plusieurs planches gravées signées par Saint-Claude, Claronne, Saint-Denis, Chareton, Sarene, Versailles, etc. On y trouve l'illustration de la famille prenant son dîner dans les branches du Poirier sans pareil. Ce poirier pouvait apparemment accueillir jusqu'à une douzaine de convives. On dit généralement qu'il a été brûlé par les troupes alliées en 1814, mais une gravure de 1822 représentant les lieux à visiter à Paris suggère qu'il a survécu plus longtemps. Les planches sont en bon état, avec seulement quelques marques. Belles illustrations des activités des enfants. Bien qu'il ne s'agisse pas d'un exemplaire complet, les planches ont été retirées de WorldCat / OCLC : 460892067.‎

‎A scarce early edition published by Langlume et Peltier. This is not the book, but 12 of the plates plus engraved title with vignette. Gumuchian 4641 has the same uncoloured version of the plates as found here. Early Edition, engraved with a small frontispiece, and several engraved plates signed by Saint-Claude, Claronne, Saint-Denis, Chareton, Sarene, Versailles, etc. Included here is the illustration of the family eating dinner in the tree-tops of le Poirier sans pareil. This pear tree could apparently accommodate up to a dozen diners. Commonly said to be burned by Allied troops in 1814, evidence from an 1822 engraving of places to visit in Paris, suggest that it survived longer. The plates are in decent condition, with a little marking only. Nice examples of children's activities. Although this is not a complete copy, the plates have been removed from WorldCat / OCLC: 460892067. .‎

‎France S.P. C1895 Une jolie aquarelle, partiellement achevée, très dans le style de Charles Léandre. Non signée, cette uvre semble être une composition inachevée destinée à un magazine tel que « Le Rire » ou « L'Assiette au Beurre ». Une femme assise sur une chaise de réalisateur s'adresse à un homme détendu, vêtu d'un costume de la fin du XIXe siècle, coiffé d'un canotier et arborant une moustache imposante. La partie peinte est très travaillée et semble achevée. Ce qui est curieux, c'est que l'esquisse au crayon montre une autre femme, debout de l'autre côté de l'homme, qui lui tape sur l'épaule. Seule sa main a été encrée. Il est tentant de penser que l'ombre de la femme a été laissée intentionnellement fantomatique, comme la conscience de l'homme lui rappelant sa femme. Ce qui contredit cette hypothèse, c'est que le « fantôme » est au crayon (ce qui n'aurait pas été reproduit dans une publication prévue). De plus, le pied gauche de l'homme n'est également dessiné qu'au crayon. Tout bien considéré, il s'agit donc d'une caricature inachevée. Il n'en reste pas moins un fabuleux dessin fin de siècle. Sur papier d'art, avec quelques petites entailles sur les bords et un léger noircissement. Un seul pli au centre, là où la feuille a été pliée. 30 cm x 22 cm.‎

‎A lovely water colour, partly finished, very much in the style of Charles Léandre. Unsigned, this work appears to be an incomplete composition for a magazine such as "Le Rire" or "L'Assiette au Beurre." A worman on a director's chair, is speaking to a relaxed gentleman, in late nineteenth century dress, wearing a straw boater and with an outsized moustache. The painted area is highly skilled, and appears to be finished. What is curious, is that the pencil sketch shows another woman, stood to the other side of the man, and tapping him on the shoulder. Only her hand has been inked in. It is tempting to think that the shadow of the woman is left intentionally ghost like, as the man's conscience reminding him of his wife. What argues against this, is that the "ghost" is in pencil (which wouldn't have reproduced in any intended publication). Also, the man's left foot is also only in pencil. So on balance, this is an unfinished caricature. Still a fabulous fin de siecle drawing. On art paper, with a little nicking to the edges and slight darkening. A single fold to the centre where the sheet has been folded. 30cm x 22cm. .‎

‎Cologne Henry Wommer 1684 Première édition. Le lieu de publication, Cologne, est probablement fictif, et cet ouvrage a très certainement été imprimé aux Pays-Bas. Reliure cartonnée relativement récente, avec des plats marbrés et un titre en cuir sur le dos, orné de lettres dorées. En très bon état, ne présentant que de très légères traces d'usure. L'intérieur est en excellent état. Propre et lumineux de bout en bout. 24 pages. 14 cm x 8,5 cm. Cette brochure a vu le jour à un moment charnière de la confrontation entre la République néerlandaise et la France de Louis XIV. La guerre des Réunions (1683-1684) venait de s'achever avec la trêve de Ratisbonne (Regensburg), signée le 15 août 1684, qui accordait à la France Strasbourg, le Luxembourg et d'autres gains territoriaux issus de sa politique dite des « Réunions ». Elle est répertoriée dans la collection « Dutch Pamphlets Online » de Brill, qui conserve des milliers de documents de ce type datant de l'âge d'or néerlandais et de la période de conflit qui s'ensuivit avec la France. L'auteur reste toutefois inconnu. Aucun exemplaire n'était disponible au moment du catalogage, et seuls quelques exemplaires sont conservés dans des bibliothèques (en Allemagne, aux Pays-Bas ou en Pologne). ‎First edition. The publication place of Cologne is probably fictitious, and this work was almost certainly printed in Holland. Relatively recent hardback binding with marbled boards and leather title to the spine with gilt titles. In very good condition, with very slight rubbing only. Internally in beautiful condition. Clean and bright throughout. 24 pages long. 14cm x 8.5cm. The pamphlet emerged at a pivotal moment in the confrontation between the Dutch Republic and Louis XIV's France. The War of the Reunions (16831684) had just concluded with the Truce of Ratisbon (Regensburg), signed on 15 August 1684, which rewarded France with Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and other territorial gains from its so-called "Reunion" policy. It is catalogued in the Dutch Pamphlets Online collection by Brill, which preserves thousands of such documents from the Dutch Golden Age and the subsequent period of conflict with France. The author, however, remains unknown. No copies available at the time of cataloguing, with a handful of library holdings (All Germany, Netherlands or Poland). ‎Un bel album, contenant 74 grandes photographies originales de cinq voyages. Il s'agit de Berlin 1895, des Alpes françaises et de Nancy en 1896, de Trèves en 1897, d'Interlaken et des Alpes suisses en 1898 et du Tyrol en 1899. Les photographies ont été achetées auprès d'éminents photographes commerciaux de l'époque. Les photographies françaises sont en grande partie de ND Phot, les suisses de Schroeder & Cie de Zurich et d'Edition Photoglob. La majorité des épreuves sont soit à l'albumine, soit à des épreuves gélatino-argentiques anciennes. Comme la première gélatine d'argent était si semblable à l'albumine, il est difficile de le dire. Il existe un certain nombre d'imprimés colorisés. La plupart des tirages sont assez grands, avec un bon nombre aussi grand que 21 cm x 27,5 cm La plupart sont imprimés un à une page, mais quelques-uns des plus petits tirages sont imprimés deux à une page. L'une des images est une photographie double / pliante. Taille de l'album 27 cm x 36 cm‎

‎A lovely album, containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895, French Alps and Nancy in 1896, Trier in 1897, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899. The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot, the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob. The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large, with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm. Most are printed one to a page, but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm‎

L'ouvrage est un leporello, avec 25 planches colorées à la main de paysans en costume régional. Chaque planche est étiquetée ci-dessous. Les premières planches présentent de légères rousseurs, les autres sont propres et brillantes. Un bel ouvrage d'illustration bretonne. 16cm x 11cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 6967049. Ce document fait état de quatre fonds de bibliothèque, tous situés en Amérique.‎

The boards and spine are a little faded and rubbed, but substantially sound. No titles inside. The work is a leporello, with 25 hand coloured plates of peasants in regional costume. Each is labelled below. The first few plates have light foxing to them, the rest are clean and bright. An attractive piece of Breton illustration. 16cm x 11cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6967049. Couvertures souples originales avec texte et emblème héraldique sur les couvertures. Elles sont saines, mais quelque peu assombries. Quelques marques légères et une petite entaille à la tête et à la queue du dos. A l'intérieur, les pages sont propres et soignées (et complètes) avec un léger assombrissement des bords de page. La reliure cousue est très lâche - elle tient juste le livre ensemble, en particulier à la première collection. Elle gagnerait à être restaurée. Les 25 planches sont présentes et en bon état. Chaque planche est précédée d'une page d'explication. 37cm x 28cm.‎

‎First edition. A decent copy of this beautifully illustrated work. Numbered, one of only 200 copies. (#52). Original soft covers with text and heraldic device to the covers. These are sound, but somewhat darkened. Some light marking and a little nicking to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the pages are clean and neat (and complete) with a touch of darkening to the page edges. The sewn binding is very loose - just holding the book together, particularly to the first gather. Would benefit from restoration. All 25 plates are present and in good condition. Each plate has a page of explanation preceding it. 37cm x 28cm. ,‎

‎First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.‎

‎A single issue of a weekly anti-Catholic diatribe in the form of a contemporary broadside issued at the time of the Popish Plot (1678-1681). The Weekly Pacquet is Number 16 - Both of the broadsides were issued Friday 24th October 1679. Pagination is continuous (presumably from issue 1) and these leaves are numbered page [121] - [128]. They are held together, but would appear to have been bound together with other issues at some point. 16 pages. 190 by 140mm (7œ by 5œ inches). Clean and tidy with very slight darkening to the page edge only.‎

Boards are quite rubbed, and the front board is a little loose but holding well. Inside the book has some age toning but is otherwise good. viii, 136 pp. With illustrated frontis. 230 x 140 mm (9 x 5œ inches). Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796 - 1817) was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. Charlotte was to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III and her father, but died in childbirth - at the tender age of 21.‎

‎First edition. Complete with 12 high quality colour lithographs and text. One of the "Nelsons' Pictorial Guide-Books for Tourists" series. Lilac covered blind and gilt stamped hardback with a colour lithograph pasted to the centre of the front cover. (This is one of the 12 lithographs). Pale blue end papers. Blind stamped booksellers embossed with "W.H. Smith & Co" to the front end paper. The work is complete with 11 lithographs inside, and 32 pages of accompanying text. There were other publications by Nelson at the same time. One was a portfolio with loose plates and 16 pages of text. Another with 24 plates combines the Interior and Exterior illustrations. Condition is excellent. A little fading to the front cover and spine, but clean and with minimal handling. Internally clean and tidy throughout. 11cm x 17cm. 32 pages. ‎New York John McLoughlin 1860 John McLoughlin was a Scottish-born coach maker who became a prominent figure in the New York publishing industry during the 19th century. He began in 1819 after moving to New York and initially worked for the Sterling Iron Company, where he developed an interest in printing. By 1828, he had established his own printing business on Tryon Row in Manhattan, focusing on publishing semi-religious tracts for children under the title McLoughlin's Books for Children. In 1840, McLoughlin partnered with wood engraver Robert H. Elton to form Elton & Co., which specialised in toy books, comic almanacs, and valentines. His son, John McLoughlin Jr., eventually took over in 1850 when both senior partners retired. The firm of McLoughlin Brothers is listed at 24 Beekman St. in the New York directories for 1858 to 1862, McLoughlin Bros. was located at 30 Beekman St., New York, between 1863 and April, 1870. Under John Jr.'s leadership, the company became known as McLoughlin Brothers and pioneered the use of colour printing technologies, including chromolithography, for children's books. This innovation made their publications visually striking and widely popular. The McLoughlin Brothers expanded their offerings to include games, puzzles, paper dolls, and other children's products. By 1870, they had opened the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Their works often featured adaptations of British stories by illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. The company thrived until it was sold to Milton Bradley in 1920. Despite this transition, the McLoughlin imprint continued to produce children's books into the early 20th century.‎

‎First edition. An attractive children's chapbook with hand coloured wood engravings. Pink soft covers, with old tape reinforcement to the spine. Otherwise reasonably clean if a little darkened. Inside, are eight pages, each with a half page hand coloured illustration and half page of verse. Clean but a little darkened. Adverts for the publisher to the rear cover. Would be an excellent copy if not for the tape. 15cm x 11cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 33100846 with the curious exception that all the records record it as "the story" rather than "history."‎

‎France S.P. C1830 Trois jolies tabatières en papier maché. Françaises, vers 1830. Chacune présente une gravure sous vernis sur le couvercle. L'une est colorée, les deux autres ne le sont pas. Les boîtes ont des bords peints autour de l'image. Les images sont un peu assombries et les bords sont un peu éraflés, mais les boîtes sont encore très présentables. Les trois images sont les suivantes : 1) "Devinequi ?" "Devinez qui". Deux jeunes hommes dans une scène arcadienne. L'un d'eux est derrière et couvre les yeux de son ami. Image colorée Semble être une aquarelle sous vernis. 8,5 cm de diamètre, 1,5 cm de profondeur. Sain mais avec un léger dommage à la base. 2) "La Veillée" Un groupe de cinq personnes dans une chaumière, attendant avec impatience, mais on ne sait pas pourquoi. Gravure sur bois sous vernis. 9 cm de diamètre. Profondeur de 2 cm. Sain mais avec un léger dommage à la base. 3) "La tendresse Maternelle" "La tendresse d'une mère". Semble représenter une mère essayant de sauver un enfant de la noyade. Gravure sur bois sous vernis. 8,5 cm x 2 cm. Bords peints à l'or et base en placage de bois. Bon état.‎

‎Three lovely papier maché snuff boxes. French, circa 1830. Each has an engraving under varnish to the lid. One is coloured, two are uncoloured. The boxes have painted edges around the image. The images are a touch darkened, and the edges are a little scuffed, but the boxes are still very presentable. The three are as follows: 1) "Devinequi?" "Guess who." Two young men in an arcadian scene. One is behind, and covering his friends eyes. Coloured image Appears to be a watercolour under varnish. 8.5cm diameter, 1.5cm depth. Sound but with slight damage to the base. 2) "La Veillée" "The Vigil" A group of five in a cottage, waiting expectantly, although who knows what for. Woodcut under varnish. 9cm diameter. 2cm depth. Sound but with slight damage to the base. 3) "La tendresse Maternelle" "a mother's tenderness." Appears to be a mother trying to save a child from drowning. Woodcut under varnish. 8.5cm x 2cm. Gold painted edges and wood veneer base. Good condition. .‎

‎Two albumen photographs of Paris Perspective de l'Avenue des Champs Elysées / Paris L'Opera.‎

‎Paris N.D. Photo / X. Photo. C1875 Deux superbes photographies sur papier albuminé représentant Paris, collées sur les deux faces d'un même carton rigide. Elles mesurent toutes deux 21 cm x 28 cm. L'une représente une vue des Champs-Élysées prise depuis le sommet de l'Arc de Triomphe. Une image nette et lumineuse, montrant une foule de voitures sur la route, avec des piétons sur les larges trottoirs latéraux. La vue s'estompe au loin. Une photographie nette et de bonne qualité. Le deuxième côté montre la façade de l'Opéra national avec des voitures, des omnibus et des piétons qui s'affairent. Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant dans cette photo, c'est que des lampadaires sont en cours d'installation devant l'Opéra. Cela nous permet de dater la photographie, car ils ont été installés à l'origine en 1875. Ils font partie de la « Ceinture de Lumière », un ensemble de 60 luminaires conçus par l'architecte Charles Garnier comme partie intégrante de l'extérieur de l'opéra lors de son ouverture le 5 janvier 1875. Une belle photographie, bien qu'un peu décolorée. La carte de support mesure 25,5 cm x 30,5 cm et présente quelques déchirures fermées sur les bords (qui n'affectent pas les tirages). La feuille a manifestement été retirée d'un album à un moment donné.‎

‎Two attractive albumen photographs of Paris, pasted onto two sides of the same piece of stiff card. Both are 21cm x 28cm. One is a view of the Champ Elysées taken from on top of the Arc de Triomphe. A good, clean and bright image, showing quite a crowd of carriages on the road, with pedestrians on the wide pavements to the side. The view fades into the distance. Clean and good photograph. The second side shows the front of the National Opera with carriages, omnibuses and pedestrians milling around. What is particularly interesting in this shot, is that the lamp posts are being installed in Front of the Opera. These enable us to date the photograph as they were originally installed in 1875. These form part of the "Ring of Light" (Ceinture de Lumière), a set of 60 lighting fixtures designed by architect Charles Garnier as integral to the opera house's exterior when it opened on January 5, 1875. A nice photograph, if slightly faded. The backing card is 25.5cm x 30.5cm and has a couple of closed tears to the edges. (not affecting the prints). The sheet has obviously been removed from an album at some point. .‎

‎First edition. Title page and four linen covered pages (including the rear cover). The inside flap has five skeins of coloured wool wrapped around it. The introductory verse (in Dutch) tells how easy it is to cut a page out and to use the wool to make a picture. It is clear from inside the book that one image has been cut out, and it would seem, was embroidered mainly in blue thread! The covers are browned and marked, and there is some foxing to it. Inside, mainly clean, but with a touch of marking here also. Altogether, and attractive, if incomplete piece of children's book history. 23cm x 18cm. ,‎
