He built his first steam launch the Nautilus when he was 19 years old and went on to establish the Thornycroft Boatbuilding Yards in Chiswick on the River Thames in 1864. Renowned for speed and fine lines he constantly experimented with hull shape and optimum propeller design. In 1873 he built the steam-powered spar torpedo boat Gitana for the Norwegian government. This was the first ever purpose-built torpedo boat which was used as a model for the Lightning in 1877 the first of Thornycrofts many commissions for the British Royal Navy. Thornycroft was knighted in 1901. In the twentieth century Thornycrofts company turned its focus to the design and manufacture of automobiles but Thornycroft himself continued to innovate in motor boat design. He created Coastal Motor Boats for the Royal Navy during World War I and supplied them with Motor Torpedo Boats and landing craft in World War I. 2 BLANCHE COULES THORNYCROFT 1873-1950: British naval architect. Not formally recognised in her lifetime. Born in 1873 in Hammersmith into the Thornycroft family daughter of Blanche Ada née Coules 1846-1936 and John Isaac Thornycroft. Her uncle was the sculptor Sir Hamo Thornycroft. It is now acknowledged that she made an unsung contribution to her fathers business. Trained in the same way as an apprentice she was known as her fathers assistant and was regarded as the maths expert in the business. The Thornycroft family home in Bembridge had a model ship testing facility in its grounds built in 1884 known as The Lilypond and used for complex testing of model ships until 1900. Blanches monographed notebooks record her test notes from 1907 until 1939 along with the ship tank models used in her engineering calculations are held at the Classic Boat Museum in East Cowes. These models were the basis for the development of Skimmers racing motor boats which later evolved into Coastal Motor Boats. Other models tested ideas for Acasta and Acheron Class Destroyers motor torpedo boats RAF Rescue Launches as well as RNLI Lifeboats. Blanche became the first lady-member to be admitted to The Royal Institute of Naval Architects in 1917. 3 John Lord; married Elizabeth Crate in 1813 at Hampshire Cross Hants presumably daughter of William Crate No link has currently been established between the Lords and the Thornycrofts. The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church According to the Use of the United Church of England and Ireland
Oxford: Dawson Bensley and Cooke 1809. Leather. Very Good. 12" by 9.5". None. A beautifully bound 1809 publication of the Book of Common Prayer. Bound into the end is 'a new version of the Psalms of David fitted to the tunes used in churches by N Brady Chaplain in Ordinary and N Tate Poet-Laureat to His Majesty'. Printed 1807. Printed at the Clarendon Press by Dawson Bensley and Cooke printers to the University; and sold by W. Dawson at the Oxford Bible Warehouse Paternoster Row London. The Book of Common Prayer is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion as well as by the Continuing Anglican "Anglican realignment" and other Anglican churches. The original book published in 1549 Church of England 1957 in the reign of Edward VI was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books unlike books of prayers contain the words of structured or liturgical services of worship. By the 19th century other pressures upon the book of 1662 had arisen. Adherents of the Oxford Movement begun in 1833 raised questions about the relationship of the Church of England to the apostolic church and thus about its forms of worship. Known as Tractarians after their production of Tracts for the Times on theological issues they advanced the case for the Church of England being essentially a part of the 'Western Church' of which the Roman Catholic Church was the chief representative. The Book of Common Prayer has had a great influence on a number of other denominations. While theologically different the language and flow of the service of many other churches owes a great debt to the prayer book. Together with the Authorized version and the works of Shakespeare the Book of Common Prayer has been one of the three fundamental underpinnings of modern English. As it has been in regular use for centuries many phrases from its services have passed into the English language either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings. In a decorative contemporary Regency full morocco binding. Externally generally sound although rubbed the front joint just starting. Internally firmly bound. Bright with light scattered spotting. Copperplate ink inscription dated 1813 to front blank. Slight loss to front free-endpaper. Very Good Dawson, Bensley and Cooke hardcover
