‎Brethren in Iniquity:‎

‎London: : Randal Taylor 1690. Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years summarising Bishop Burnett Stillingfleet and others whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON Presented the First of January 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster by Authority of Parliament against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages less so inside. There are pencil ticks throughout the work in the margins. Wing B 4382. 4 67 1 pp. Randal Taylor, unknown‎

‎CARTE DE VISITE ALBUM ""OPENER"" The Victorian Album Almanack 1866.‎

‎Title from caption at centre of image. Albumen print of calendar for 1866 with two illustrations one of shipping in Hobson's Bay the other a view of the city of Melbourne from the Yarra; carte de visite format 101 x 63 mm mount; recto of mount imprinted at bottom margin 'Pt. No. 5 / Copyright Secured'; verso blank; print and mount are both in fine condition. Cartes de visite of this type - usually featuring a short rhyming verse and with a pictorial theme - were printed as novelty items to be placed as a frontispiece in the family's or collector's photograph album. However this Melbourne-themed example which comprises a miniature calendar for 1866 with tiny illustrations is one that we have never sighted before. Nor have we seen an example from any other year. The publisher too remains a mystery as we can trace no mention of 'The Victorian Album Almanack' in Melbourne newspaper advertisements or notices of the period. A bona fide Melbourne carte de visite curio. unknown‎

‎Certaine sermons or homilies appointed to be read in churches : In the time of the late Queen Elizabeth of famous memory. And now thought fit to be reprinted by authority from the King's most excellent Majesty.‎

‎London: John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633. A nice copy of this two volume work unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work particularly to the edges and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one. Also lacking is leaf 3I2 page 99/100 with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely a full page plate dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily published in various forms is important as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98 vi 1-98 101-320 iv. 290 x 210 mm 11½ x 8¼ inches. John Norton for Joyce Norton hardcover‎

Three old manuscript corrections in last column; two lines of text are mostly worn off at the top one partly legible. Archival mat window mylar sheet.</p> <p>An unrecorded 18th century broadside commemorating Sir Lancelot du Lake and Sir Tarquin’s hand-to-hand combat battle.</p> <p>The sheet was sold to tourists at Tamworth Castle in Tamworth Staffordshire where a 16th century mural on the castle’s Great Wall depicted the fight. The mural was whitewashed over in 1783. Friends of Tamworth Castle and Museum</p> <p>The broadside states: “If Travellers who pass that way Tamworth Castle On Serjeant Willcox call He to this Day can shew these Knights Fighting against a Wall.†Prefatory text wraps around a woodcut of Sir Tarquin falling to the ground mortally wounded by Lancelot. </p> <p>Based on Thomas Deloney’s The Noble Acts newly found Of Arthur of the Table Round the verse has has 144 lines consisting of 36 hymnal stanza quatrains.</p> <p>A lesser-known character in Arthurian lore Tarquin had imprisoned 44 knights of King Arthur’s court. Both wounded were and bled full sore For breath they both did stand. Leaning upon their Swords awhile Quoth Tarquin Hold thy hand /. Why that’s well said quoth Lancelot then Thy motion likes me well; But who’s this Knight thou so do’st hate. His name I pray thee tell / His name quoth Tarquin is Du Lake He slew my Brother dear… / Strait at each other like two Boars They both enraged fly; And two long Hours by Tamworth They fought most furiously. / The Ground besprinkled was with gore Long Time was hard to say Which of these knights the bravest was Or which would win the day; / Till Lancelot with one mighty Stroke His foe did so assail That Tarquin stagger’d and his strength Therewith began to fail; / With loss of blood he then grew faint Which when Sir Lancelot found With all his Force a blow he gave Which brought him to the Ground. / Then forthwith taking off his Helm Smiting his Neck in twain His Body and his Bason threw Into the River Tame. /. ‎Cut for Cut the Rubber Rubb’d Nonsense for Nonsense or Dicko-Don-Quacko And his Methodist Brethren all in an Uproar… broadside caption title‎

‎<p>Np. Norwich England 1760s. Broadside. 12½ x 8½ inches. Laid paper; printed in two columns. Superscription “Third Part†in manuscript written above title. Old fold lines; staining; some losses to paper at edges not affecting text; good.</p> <p>Unrecorded eighteenth century polemical broadside in the tradition satirist Ned Ward or the mock poem Hudibras. </p> <p>While the present broadside includes only a few lines of poetry like Hudibras it appears to describe a religious controversy between a “Methodist Grub-Street Printer†named Don Dismallo Thickscullo de Halfwitto and another printer Dicko-Don-Quacko.The broadside reports that the printers’ dispute was also carried out in dueling newspapers the eighteenth century equivalent of an internet “flame war.†</p> <p>That the dispute was ongoing seems to be implied in the manuscript addition written at the top of the broadside: “Third Part.†The broadside states:</p> <p>"The Methodists and their Printer having erected their Battery of Lampoonary against the Printer of the Paper call’d Helter Skelter He hereby declares a Paper War against all Dicko Don Quack’s Mendicant Crew…"</p> <p>A mention of a work printed by the “Methodist Grub-Street Printer†concerning Pondicherry may well help to date the broadside to after 1761 when British forces in India defeated the French at Pondicherry. An account of a legal dispute between two printers found in a 1768 English literary annual The British Palladium may well shed light on the controversy outlined in the present broadside and suggests a possible place of publication Norwich England. The account begins:</p> <p>"An eminent Printer in the City of Norwich was once personally aspersed by a single Quack distributing Hand-bills against him in that city who as a Remedy for his Disorder brought out a Pamphlet cried about the Streets intitled The History of Dicko Don Quacko Liliano Brazenfaciano who instead of considering it as a wholesome Remedy for his Evil took Offence at his Prescriber insisting on his being misnamed and misrepresented. In consequence whereof a Trial was appointed to come on before a certain Judge…"</p> <p>The tradition of such fantastically named characters hearkens back to Samuel Butler’s Hudibras 1663 1664 and 1678 and to Four Hudibrastick Canto’s Being Poems on Four the greatest Heroes That liv’d in any Age since Nero’s Don Juan Howlet Hudibras Dicko-ba-nes and Bonniface 1715 sometimes attributed to Ned Ward.</p> <p>Unrecorded eighteenth century satirical broadside concerning the press and the growing influence of print culture in England.</p> <p>Not in ESTC. In soft paper covers with red and blue design and text to the front cover. No separate title pages. Covers are in good mainly clean condition with just a touch of handling. Internally clean if fractionally darkened. 14.5cm x 23.5cm. We have been unable to trace a copy of this on WorldCat although somewhat similar design and art books by Monrocq are produced in this period. No copies for sale at the time of cataloguing. . Monrocq unknown‎

‎Eccentric Biography; Or Memoirs of Remarkable Female Characters Ancient and Modern.‎

‎1803. London: Printed by J. Cundee . Sold by T. Hurst. 1803. 12mo. Contemporary sprinkled calf with restorations; pp. xii 349 eight stipple-engraved portraits including frontispiece; binding worn; occasional light spotting or browning p. 173 with flaw to lower outer corner; otherwise a good copy.First edition of this anonymously published compendious biographical dictionary of remarkable women who defied gender roles or led independent lives and had a positive impact on their societies and the perception of women.Almost programmatically the volume opens with the biography of Alice a 106-year old African-American slave in Pennsylvania who remembered the days of William Penn and the first settlers. At the age of 95 she still could be seen in full gallop on her daily way to church. Alice of Dunk's Ferry as she became known died in 1802 in Bristol Pennsylvania and is considered now to have been the formost local aural historian for the eighteenth centrury. In the entry for Alice is a reference to a portrait ""See annexed engraving"" p. 3 which is not listed in the directions to the binder and strangely enough can only be found in the later 1804 Worcester Massachusetts edition printed by Isaiah Thomas 1749-1831 a New England pioneer politician writer publisher and printer to whom this text is sometimes ascribed.A precursor of this dictionary is the 1801 ""Eccentric Biography; Or Memoirs of Remarkable Characters"" published by T. Hurst. It contained biographies of both genders; however far fewer of women about a fifth of the almost one hundred biographies collected in this first edition. Among them are biographies of the cross-dressing Chevalier d'Eon Mme de Pompadour Angelica Kaufmann Mary Wollstonecraft the longest and most laudatory biographical entry in the volume Mary Astell Catherine I and II empresses of Russia and other outstanding female lives from history.See Sabin 21754 for the Boston edition of ""Eccentric Biography of Remarkable Characters"" and a Boston 1825 edition. unknown‎

The blocks have rubbing to the corners with slight loss of image. The lithographs are on thin paper and has small nicks and tears to the edges but still attractive. Darkening to the image on the front board. Overall an attractive game showing signs of regular use. This was clearly British from the red post box on the image to the lid of the box.

‎Paris: Chez Onfroy 1780. Two volumes in one first edition. A rare guide to the state of Great Britain from a French perspective. Volume one was for 1780 volume two for 1781. It would seem that there were plans for this to be an annual review but if so this doesn't appear to have happened as Worldcat only records these two years. Full leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine. The label and one panel of the gilt to the spine has been pulled away leaving some leather but no surface see photos. The rest of the boards are in good slightly bumped condition. Inside there is an owner's signature to the end paper. The rest is clean and tidy. The half-title reads "Etat de l'Angleterre pour l'anneÌe 1780." viii 178 2 pages. The first volume conforms to OCLC: 40428559. This is followed by another half title for the year 1781 and a second volume of the book. viii 199 3. pages. This second volume conforms to OCLC: 630334412. Both volumes are full of the in depth information required by researchers. Including names addresses ranks etc. For example there is a list of the names and addresses of all the London bankers accounts of the King and court names of ships and vessels in the navy etc. etc. Text in French. 170 by 100mm 6¾ by 4 inches. No other copies available to purchase at the time of cataloguing. . 170 x 100 mm. ‎Five albumen photographs of Italy Switzerland and Cologne on two cards‎

‎Italy: N/P C1875. An attractive collection of five albumen photographs of Italy pasted onto two large backing cards. The first card is 54cm x 43.5cm. This has a photograph of the door of the Basilica of Saint Zeno in Verona. A large photograph in excellent condition. 36cm x 27cm. Clean and neat. A tourist print #645 to the bottom edge. From details on the photograph this dates to around 1890. Backing card has a touch of marking and a chip to the top edge but is good overall. Blank to verso. The second card is 58cm x 44cm. This holds two photographs of Rome each pasted down with a hand inked double frame. The top photograph is St Peter's Square and Basilica. Eerily empty bar a single horse and cart to one side. Inked to the edge is "Le Vatican Rome." Mainly clean image with a touch of foxing to the top edge. 25.5cm x 35.5cm. This is circa 1875. Below is an image of The Forum in Rome. Again devoid of visitors. This is possibly a photograph by Tommaso Cucioni C1860-1875 or by another photographer copying Cucioni's framing. 27cm x 38.5cm. To the verso is an attractive inked pattern across the whole sheet. In place are two albumen photographs. To the top is a small 15cm x 10cm image of the statue of the Lion of Lucerne. Probably a tourist print. Below this is a lovely image of Cologne Cathedral in 1875 based on the two towers being under construction. A nice clean image. Overall an attractive ensemble of albumen images on two sheets. . N/P unknown‎

‎Fragment from The Book of Psalms.‎

‎Continental Europe 13th-14th century. . Hebrew manuscript on vellum in old black ink; sheet size: 32 x 21.5 cm mount size: 45 x 35 cm; browning staining creases and marginal tears; mounted.<br /> Fragment from the Writings' Book of Psalms with Masorah containing Psalms 112 to 114. Psalm 113 also known in the Christian Latin liturgy as 'Laudate pueri Dominum' beginning in the King James' version: 'Praise ye the Lord O ye servants of the Lord'. In Judaism it is the first of the six Psalms comprising the Hallel prayer which is recited on 'Rosh Chodesh' the first day of the Hebrew month and on Jewish holidays. In Roman Catholicism it is one of the Psalms included in the Vespers service the evening prayer. It has been set to music often notably by Claudio Monteverdi in his 'Vespro della Beata Vergine' in 1610. In Hebrew the psalm has several famous melodies typical to each community's place of settlement which were passed trough generations in Sephardi Mizrachi and Ashkenazi communities and dating back to the middle ages and possibly prior.<br /><br />It seems that this leaf was used in what is known in Hebrew as 'Gnizat Krichot' the use of the leaves from old books' for binding newer books at a time when bookmaking materials were scarce. Many Jewish books that were confiscated by the Catholic Church during the Inquisition were also repurposed as binding material.<br /> [Continental Europe], [13th-14th century]. hardcover‎

‎<p>Boston: Pinkham Press 1917–1918. 22 x 14 inches printed on cardstock. Illustrated. Lightly soiled; near fine.</p> <p>“Our Fathers are Fighting in France.†A rare and unrecorded first World War photo-illustrated broadside documenting a little-known display of Franco-American friendship. </p> <p>Across America various patriotic societies often organized by women raised funds and sent baby clothes and necessities to France. These funds went to help babies orphaned by the War or to help French mothers with children whose fathers were fighting with the American solders. As one American soldier described it: “We will say for instance that this is Baby No. 4000. She wears wooden-soled shoes and half-length woolen stockings and a blue calico dress and her mother does the washing for the Sammies who are billeted out in the barn with Toto….†“Right in Touch with the Babies†in Life Magazine 1918.</p> <p>Here at the French Baby Fund Festival Exhibition the Boston community lent a benevolent hand and declared “May Day†to be “Baby Day†as part of a three day festival at Liberty Cottage Boston Common. The raised funds were likely funneled to the Fraternité Franco-Américaine.</p> <p>The broadside is printed with the colors of France and all of its text is printed in a pale lavender.</p> unknown‎

‎From Aden to Edinburgh. An albumen album of a Grand Tour‎

‎Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . N.P. unknown‎
