‎An Aboriginal man of King George's Sound Western Australia. Circa 1835.‎

‎Watercolour on laid paper with watermark of a horse and rider and pair of scales 200 x 148 mm sheet; captioned in ink 'Nouvelle Hollande' at bottom left and with a foliation number '184' in the same hand at bottom right; the sheet is unmounted verso blank and the drawing has survived in fine condition - virtually in its original state; removal from a sketchbook at some point is confirmed by the slightly roughened top edge of the sheet which also shows evidence of the original stitch holes. This watercolour sketch was made by an anonymous French artist probably around 1835. It appears to be a conflation of several images by the voyage artist Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1887 which depict Indigenous people at King George's Sound Albany Western Australia. Sainson made his sketches in situ in 1826 during the Astrolabe's scientific round-the-world voyage under the command of Dumont d'Urville. His drawings were reproduced as engraved plates in Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe Paris: J. Tastu1830-35 and elsewhere. The male figure wears a short animal-skin cloak characteristic of the type worn by the men in Sainson's King George's Sound drawings. His arms are outstretched with the wrists limp and hands downturned a highly distinctive gesture that appears to have been copied directly from the identical body language of several of the subjects in Sainson's famous drawing titled Port du Roi Georges. I have resisted the inclination to have this book restored and have adjusted the price accordingly to accommodate restoration if desired for the purchaser as it is such a unique item.</p><p>Provenance –</p><p>Inscribed by two hands:</p><p>First inscription probably contemporaneous with publication: J – L inked through and obscured. "At the Great Posterne betwixt Cripplegate and Moorfields. Druggist." <br />Postern. At the west end of Petty France leading into Moorfields within the precinct of the late Monastery or Priory of the New Hospital or Hospital of the Blessed Mary without Bishopsgate</p><p>2nd inscription to verso free endpaper "Robert Robson Anno Domini 1733" with some practice writing "To – To - To" below it. Perhaps in a younger hand than the inscription on the opposite page</p><p>3rd inscription on crown page: "Robert Robson Book A.D. 1733." "Sacrilegy est instar." "De grote state principu disputart. Alsted"</p><p>Sacrilegy est instar - Justinian's Code and later interpreters such as Frederick II used this concept to argue that questioning the ruler's decisions was akin to violating religious sanctity. Interesting to note that the Alsted quotation is in Dutch</p><p>Robert Robson appears to have been a well-educated individual with knowledge of canon law. He has also made a marginal annotation to the Prayers: "Pem. Arcadia p. 243" ie The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia; by Sir Philip Sidney.</p><p>Frontispiece to 'Eikon Basilike: The pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in his solitudes and sufferings'; emblematical design; to right Charles I kneeling on his left knee looking upwards with his head three-quarters right holding a crown of thorns a book propped on the table in front of him and a crown at his feet; a ray extends from his left eye to the crown of martyrdom at top right. The frontispiece is cropped to be accommodated in such a small volume. <br />"Marshall's design is known in seven slightly different states – an indication that the image was in great demand with a plate being worn down by the continual printing process and re-engraving many times over. The item microfilmed is actually Wing E301.</p><p>This copy complies with the British Library and Oxford University Magdalen College copies but there are variants with a further plate similar to the octavo editions. There is no evidence that this copy has ever had an extra plate.</p><p>King Charles I of England was executed by beheading on January 30 1649 in London following his conviction for high treason after losing the English Civil War to Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces. Each volume with an engraved frontispiece and half title page plus another twenty-five plates spread between the three volumes. Repaired tears to pp. 119-122 in volume I. Textblocks tone d and spitted more so to the plates and facing pages. Binding rubbed worn and marked with some loss to tiles squares on the spines. A solid set. Good. Ellis was a religious author who wrote mainly about women's role in society. She is well known for her works: The Women of England The Mothers of England and The Daughters of England and established Rawdon House a school for young ladies. First Edition. With thirty illustrations by George Cruikshank. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator best known for his illustrations in the novels of Charles Dickens. Francis Edward Smedley began his literary career by contributing to Sharpe's London Magazine anonymously. His contributions were well received and would lead to Smedley's development of 'Frank Fairlegh'. In a half morocco binding. Externally sound with bumping and rubbing. Front joint and hinge failed with board detached but present. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. ‎London : The Working Men's Educational Union King William Street Trafalgar Square 1854. Coloured lithographic wall hanging printed on calico 880 x 1160 mm; original brass eyelets at each corner; numbered 'LM No. 12' lower left; slightly creased but a well preserved example the hand colouring still strong and vibrant. The Working Men's Educational Union was a philanthropic organisation founded in London in 1852. One of its aims was to provide free education for the working classes through public lectures at numerous venues across the city. During the 1850s it published at least 400 different large format lithographic wall hangings which it called 'Diagrams' that were designed to illustrate lectures on a wide variety of subjects. They were produced on calico inexpensive unprocessed cotton - apparently to avoid paper duty - and were available for purchase at the Union's premises in Skinner Street Clerkenwell and King William Street near London Bridge. In 1854 the Union advertised a series of these Diagrams titled Missionary Scenes 'Being twenty coloured Diagrams upon Missionary Trials Perils and Insults Heathen Superstitions Cruelties etc. ; suited for Missionary Lectures. Price to subscribers £1 10s. to non-subscribers £2 5s' advertisement contained within the pamphlet The progress of locomotion; being two lectures on the advances made in artificial locomotion in Great Britain by Benjamin Scott. London Published by F. Baron for the Working Men's Educational Union 1854. It is likely that the present Diagram of which we can trace no other extant example formed part of this Missionary series. Indeed it seems reasonable to posit that the 'LM' preceding the sequence number '12' at lower left refers to 'Lectures on Missions' or similar. Although its artist is unidentified the image is possibly after a published lithograph perhaps one which appeared in a journal such as the Illustrated London News. The Alexander Turnbull Library National Library of New Zealand holds in its collection fifteen lithographic Diagrams produced by the Working Men's Educational Union. These depict scenes in New Zealand Australia the Torres Strait the Pacific Islands and South Africa. unknown‎
