‎A Second and Third Letter to the Whigs &c. By the Author of the First.‎

‎London: Printed for M. Cooper at the Globe in Pater-noster Row 1748 92 pages. Disbound from old leather binding with remains on spine. Edges were trimmed for binding. Front cover present with partial title and price eighteen-pence. A contemporary wrote an interesting note on the front cover: "Very strong ag't Littleton and very / Little against Pitt in general / Exposing the pretended Patriots." According to Walpole in 1747 "I was re-chosen in the new Parliament for Kellington in Cornwall. About the same time was published a Letter to the Tories written as I then believed by Mr. George Lyttelton who with his family had come over to Mr. Pelham. As Mr. Lyttelton had been a great enemy of and writer against my father as as Mr. Pelham had used my father and his friends extremely ill and neglected the Whigs to court the Tories I published an answer to that piece and called it a Letter to the Whigs. It was a careless performance and written in five days. At the end of the year I wrote two more Letters to the Whigs but did not publish them till April the next year when they went through three editions immediately. I had intended to suppress them but some attacks being made by the Grenvilles on Lord Chief Justice Willes an intimate friend of my father. . . I printed them and other pieces" "Short Notes on My Life". Size: 8vo. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good. Printed for M. Cooper, at the Globe in Pater-noster Row paperback‎

‎ANON [NICHOLSON, Joseph Shield]‎

‎Toxar; A Romance‎

‎London: Longmans Green and Co 1890. First Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's dark blue bevelled boards titled in gilt and blind to spine and front board. 289pp.16pp. ads to rear. Light bumping to spine ends a little scuffing to extremities strong and handsome; internally clean with some marginal toning to page edges top-edge untrimmed. A very good strong copy with only light wear.

Published anonymously and one of only three "romance" titles written by Professor Nicholson presumably in spare moments of release from his day job which was being a very notable and respected British economist. His output more normally consisted of works on tariff reform and influential titles like "Effects of Machinery on Wages" and "Tenant's Gain Not Landlord's Loss" his works also include "A Revival of Marxism" in 1920 his last published work. When he wasn't writing studious treatises on the finer aspects of international economics and trade relations he was immersing himself into the creation of complex bits of Ancient Greek weirdness involving torrid rivalries doomed love cursed gemstones and mysterious oracular types holding forth on the wisdom of the gods. Found in Bleiler but not easily found in acceptable condition. Longmans, Green, and Co unknown‎

‎Anon [Philip Francis?]‎

‎The People's Answer to the Court Pamphlet: Entitled a Short Review of the Political State of Great Britain‎

‎Printed for J. Debrett opposite Burlington-House 1787-01-01. Leather Bound. Very Good. 1787 fourth edition 'Printed for J. Debrett opposite Burlington-House Piccadilly London 5 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches tall hardbound marbled boards over black cloth spine 4 50 pp. With a half-title. Minor rubbing to covers. Staining to half title page and slight foxing to title. Otherwise a very good copy - clean bright and unmarked - of an important eighteenth century political pamphlet. Reference: ESTC No. T82992. ~LLL~ A stinging rebuke to the lambasting in print of the Prince of Wales the future King George IV in a pamphlet entitled 'A Short Review of the Political State of Great Britain' which had been published anonymously in January 1787 by author Nathaniel William Wraxall 1751-1831 and which had attracted a great deal of attention and sales. Within a few days after publication of the 'court pamphlet' six editions each consisting of 1000 or 1500 copies were sold and the publisher Debrett which also issued this response estimated the total sales of the English edition it was also translated into French at 17000 copies. Authorship of this reply is sometimes attributed to Irish-born British politician and pamphleteer Sir Philip Francis the supposed author of the 'Letters of Junius' and the chief antagonist of Warren Hastings 1732-1818. Francis' accusations against Hastings led to the Impeachment of Warren Hastings by Parliament which has been described as 'probably the British Isles' most famous certainly the longest political trial.' In the introduction to Wraxall's posthumous memoirs editor Henry Wheatley comments 'Wraxall says that the Prince of Wales sent repeatedly to Debrett the publisher peremptorily demanding to know from him the name of the author and menacing him with prosecution for libel. If this was the case it seems probable that the secret of the authorship was well kept for a few years after Wraxall was on friendly terms with the Prince of Wales and it is scarcely probable that the Prince suspected the authorship of the pamphlet. Printed for J. Debrett, opposite Burlington-House hardcover‎
