Contemporary or early full brown leather binding with 5 raised bands to spine no title label with black decorations to cover edges. Unpaginated prefatory pages then 148pp followed by contents index. With engraved frontispiece plate of 'The Compleat Beau' before a mirror. The book has been variously attributed to Mary Astell Judith Drake and H. Wyatt. The text begins with a dedication to Her Royal Highness the Princess of Denmark 6pp then the Preface 12pp then 3pp verses 'To the Most Ingenious Mrs-- or her Admirable Defence of Her Sex' by James Drake then 'To Madam-- on the Occasion of her Essay in Defence of her Sex' 5pp by 'J.D.' presumably James Drake again. The main text then begins. This is a Very Good example. The text is well printed with wide margins and the pages clean and bright with some browning and light spotting at the ends as usual; a small marginal stain to last few leaves with a margin tear. The pages are well bound. The covers however are worn and very rubbed with abraded corners and the lower thread to the front cover broken. No ownership inscriptions. London: Printed for A . ‎Paris Thierry Fréres 1840 Carton bleu pâle, dos en bougran. Illustration d'une chapelle gothique sur le premier plat. Les planches sont un peu marquées et tachées, en particulier au dos. A l'intérieur se trouvent 8 lithographies et un plan de succession de Fraidaigue (ou Fraid-augue). Fraidaigue (Route de Morges 21). Il s'agit d'une maison de campagne en forme de chapelle néogothique construite en 1831 pour le général d'origine hollandaise Hendryk van Oyen, qui possédait auparavant La Gordanne près de Perroy. Ce bâtiment a été remplacé en 1904 par une villa cossue conçue par les architectes Alphonse Laverrière et Eugène Monod. Les lithographies et la carte sont en excellent état, avec quelques rousseurs sur les bordures seulement. Les planches sont dessinées d'après nature par Zélie Vachon. Elles sont dessinées par Jean-Jacques Champin (1796 - 1860), et lithographiées par Thierry frères de Paris. Des copies des lithographies sont conservées au Musée d'art et d'histoire de la Ville de Genève. Elles y sont datées de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. La maison/chapelle était située juste à l'extérieur de St Prex, sur la route Genève-Lausanne (aujourd'hui route de Morges). 9 feuilles, imprimées au recto seulement. Un dépliant. 350 x 290 mm.‎

‎Pale blue boards, with buckram spine. Illustration of a Gothic chapel to the front board. The boards are a little marked and stained, particularly to the back board. Inside are 8 lithographs and an estate plan of Fraidaigue (or Fraid-augue). Fraidaigue (Route de Morges 21). This was a country house in the form of a neo-Gothic chapel built in 1831 for the Dutch-born general Hendryk van Oyen, who previously owned La Gordanne near Perroy. This building was replaced in 1904 by a wealthy villa designed by architects Alphonse Laverrière and Eugène Monod. The lithographs and map are in excellent condition. with a little foxing to the borders only. The plates are drawn from nature by Zélie Vachon. They are deliniated by Jean-Jacques Champin (1796 - 1860), and lithographed by Thierry frères of Paris. Copies of the lithographs are held in the Musée d'art et d'histoire de la Ville de Genève. Here they are dated to the first half of the Nineteenth Century. The house/ chapel was located just outside St Prex, on the Geneva-Lausanne road (now Route de Morges). 9 leaves, printed to recto only. One folding. 350 x 290 mm (13Ÿ x 11œ inches). .‎

‎France 1880 Un grand dossier de fleurs et de feuilles pressées. Cela commence avec le blé / les céréales, et comprend des légumes et des fleurs. Chaque feuille a été collée sur de grandes feuilles de papier épais et maintenue en place par une étiquette écrite à la main avec le type et le nom français. (plus un certain nombre de feuilles blanches). Elles contiennent 67 spécimens complets de plantes ou de fleurs, et six autres fragments (où la plante est en grande partie perdue). Les spécimens sont collés sur le recto seulement. Les pages sont en bon état, mais plusieurs d'entre elles, dans la partie centrale, ont été tachées par l'humidité jusqu'au tiers supérieur.) (Il semblerait que certaines des plantes aient été pressées in situ et aient laissé échapper de l'eau). Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'une collection intéressante et attrayante‎

‎A large folder of pressed flowers and leaves. This begins with wheat / grains, and includes vegetables and flowers. Each has been tipped onto large sheets of heavy paper, and held in place by a hand written label with the french type, and name. The sheets are loose in an original folder. 42cm x 26cm (so each sheet is 46 x 52cm folded). There are 35 pages with at least one plant tipped in. (plus a number of blank leaves). These hold 67 complete plant or flower specimens, and a further six fragments (where the plant is largely lost). Specimens are tipped onto the recto only. The pages are in reasonable condition, but several in the middle section have been damp stained to the top third). (It would appear that some of the plants were pressed in situ and leaked water). Overal through and attractive and interesting collection. .‎

‎The photo-diary of a German family, who embarked on a world tour in 1928. 227 original photographs and 94 photo-postcards / commercial photographs are collected and captioned on 79 pages. The album was purchased on their journey at Niagara Falls, and is a limp leather, with an original painting of a native American to the front cover. The photographs vary in size, but are mainly about 14 cm x 9 cm each. Most in excellent condition. Often one man (presumably album owner) is marked with a small cross to the image. Places visited include: The journey on S.S. Lutzow (commissioned 1907 as Norddeutscher Lloyd steamship); New York; Buffalo N.Y.; Niagara Falls; Toronto; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Native Americans (posing for tourists in ceremonial dress); Chicago; San Francisco; S.S. Taiyo Maru (Originally the German "Cap Finisterre" handed to the Japanese in 1920 as war reparations); Hawaii & Honolulu, with locals posing for tourists; Tokyo, Japan; Fujiyama; Geisha's and tourist photographs; Kobe; Shanghai; Hong Kong; Manila & Philippines; Singapore; Sumatra; Ceylon; Cairo; Genova; Davos; Switzerland & Germany. The card pages of the album have nicks and closed tears, but not affecting photographs. A fascinating record of a (presumably) wealthy families tour around the world by steam ship and train. 290 x 350 mm (11œ x 13Ÿ inches).‎

‎1884 Un beau carnet de croquis d'un artiste français inconnu. Celui-ci contient des croquis de paysages du Nord de la France. Aussi des navires et des parties de navires, et des portraits à l'encre de gentilshommes. Les paysages sont souvent autour de Saint-Malo. Tous habilement exécutés au crayon, à l'encre ou au fusain. Au total il y a 13 pages de paysages, 13 de portraits, 12 de navires et bateaux et 4 autres croquis. Il y en a aussi quelques autres non significatifs. Tous dessinés entre 1884 et 1900 - ceux-ci sont créés par une main habile. Il y a un poème dédié à "Justine", qui se termine par le nom de l'auteur/artiste Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm.‎

‎A beautiful sketch book by an unknown French artist. This contains sketches of landscapes of Northern France. Also ships and parts of ships, and ink portraits of gentlemen. The landscapes is often around St. Malo. All skillfully executed in pencil, ink or charcoal. In total there are 13 pages of landscapes, 13 of portraits, 12 of ships and boats and 4 other sketches. There are also a few others not significant. All drawn between 1884 and 1900 - these are created by a skilled hand. There is a poem dedicated to 'Justine', with ends with the author / artist's name Louis de Crèvecoeur. 105 x 170 mm (4Œ x 6Ÿ inches).‎

‎First edition. Complete. A collection of 20 large albumen photographs laid onto backing card with description of each printed to the bottom edge, showing the Abbaye de Maredsous and the Ecole Abbataile. These are held in a red clamshell box with black and gilt decoration, crest and titles. The box has significant fading / spotting from damp, but is still holding well, and has done its job of protecting the photographs inside. The photographs are of high quality, and show the building of the abbey and the new school there. They are dated by the fact that the school was founded in 1881 (earliest date) and that the the Abbey was completed in 1892, but in these images is still some way off completion. Interesting architectural prints, but also of the students and staff at the school, both being educated and relaxing. A very nice collection. Images are mostly 17cm x 24cm and backing cards are 25cm x 32cm. Box is 35cm x 27cm.‎

‎North Africa N/P 1880 Un groupe de jeunes enfants est assis sur des marches au bord de l'aire commune de lavage des vêtements. Afrique du Nord - probablement Maroc. Un adulte vêtu d'une robe blanche surveille les enfants au premier plan, tandis qu'un jeune enfant vêtu d'une robe similaire leur fait face. Palmiers et route poussiéreuse à l'arrière-plan. Les enfants semblent trop jeunes pour être à l'école. Une belle image à l'albumine. Légèrement décolorée, mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. H265mm x 210mm. Sur carte verte 430 x 350 mm. Un peu assombri et bosselé mais toujours en bon état.‎

An adult in a white robe watches the children in the foreground, with a young child in similar robe facing them. Palm trees and dust road in the background. The children seem too young to be in school. An attractive albumen image. Slightly faded, but overall in good condition. H265mm x 210mm. On green backing card 430 x 350 mm. A little darkened and bumped but still in good state. .‎

Depicting hunting scenes, each with captions in French, followed by six leaves of fanfares (text and music printed to one side of leaf only). A scarce item, none for sale and only occasionally at auction. Moderate foxing throughout. Creasing to front free endpaper. In contemporary buckram binding with slight rubbing to the binding.‎

Feuilles de garde jaunes. Inscription cadeau contemporaine sur le papier de fin. le demi-titre porte l'approbation du Cardinal Prince de Croy. Trois planches gravées (frontis et deux autres) et une page de titre gravée. Il y a un peu de frottement sur les planches, mais dans l'ensemble le dos et les planches sont en bon état brillant. le papier frontal a une entaille dans le coin supérieur. Le reste de ce livre est en bon état, légèrement noirci sur les bords des pages. La plaque frontale tient toujours bien, mais risque de se détacher (légèrement lâche jusqu'à la moitié supérieure). Dans l'ensemble une copie sonore. Le livre raconte l'histoire des missions de diffusion de la foi catholique. Il y a des chapitres sur les missions jésuites, les missions à Constantinople et en Hollande. Sections également sur la religion des Arméniens, des Éthiopiens et du monastère du mont Sinaï, la mission en Guyane etc. : La seconde moitié du livre est en deux sections. Le premier traitant de la Mission en Amérique pour convertir les Amérindiens - (Les « Sauvages » de l'Illinois et de la Louisiane). La seconde avec la Mission en Inde (1701, 1709 etc.), et au Tibet.‎

‎quarter tan leather with brown boards. gilt titles and decorations to the spine. Now covered in removable archival film. All edges gilt. Yellow end papers. Contemporary gift inscription to the end paper. half title carries the approval of Cardinal Prince de Croy. Three engraved plates (frontis and two further) and an engraved title page. There is a little rubbing to the boards, but overall the spine and boards are in good bright shape. the front end paper has a nick to the top corner. The rest of this book is in good condition, slightly darkened to the page edges. The frontis plate is still holding well, but is in danger of becoming detached (slightly loose to the top half). Overall a sound copy. The book is telling the history of the missions to spread the Catholic faith. There are chapters on the Jesuit missions, missions to Constantinople and to Holland. Sections also on the religion of the Armenians, Ethiopians and the monastery at mount Sinai, the mission to Guyana etc: The Second half of the book is in two sections. The first dealing with the Mission to America to convert the Native Americans - (The "Savages" of Illinois and Louisiana). The second with the Mission to India (1701, 1709 etc.), and to Tibet.‎

Une petite collection d'histoires bibliques, avec une lithographie ovale en couleur et une citation biblique (en néerlandais) autour, avec une bordure décorative à chaque fois. Couverture cartonnée orange, avec une scène biblique gravée. Dos en tissu noir. Signature du propriétaire à la date sur le panneau avant. Le panneau arrière a une bordure décorative (mais rien à l'intérieur). Les planches sont en bon état, principalement propres, avec un peu de noircissement et de frottement. Page de titre et 13 feuilles, chacune imprimée d'un seul côté (moitié au verso et moitié au recto). L'autre page de chaque feuillet est vierge, mais la lithographie est imprimée en foncé. Nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire disponible à la vente, aucune trace dans FirstSearch / WorldCat et aucune trace de vente aux enchères. 100 x 160 mm.‎

‎A very nice copy of this rare first edition. A small collection of bible stories, with a coloured lithograph oval, and bible quotation (in Dutch) around it, with a decorative border to each. Orange hardback boards, with a bible scene engraved to it. Black cloth spine. Owner's signature to the date on the front board. Rear panel has a decorative border (but nothing within it). The boards are in good, mainly clean condition, with a touch of darkening and rubbing. Title page, and 13 leaves, each printed to one side only (half to verso and half to recto). The other page of each leaf is blank, but with a dark "bleed through" of the lithograph. We can find no copies available for sale, no record on FirstSearch / WorldCat and no auction records. 100 x 160 mm (4 x 6Œ inches). .‎

‎Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection, and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover (now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages, less so inside. There are pencil ticks throughout the work in the margins. Wing B 4382. [4], 67, [1] pp.‎

‎Saumur E. Roland 1908 Un programme attrayant pour le Carrousel de 1908. Les couvertures avant et arrière présentent des dessins de Grasser. Le programme à l'intérieur indique le nom, le grade, etc. de chaque officier de cavalerie participant, et ce qu'ils font pendant le Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 x 250 mm (12œ x 9Ÿ pouces). Les couvertures sont un peu assombries et marquées. Petit trou d'épingle sur un bord. Fente réparée sur les 3-4 cm inférieurs du dos. L'intérieur est propre mais légèrement assombri. Une belle pièce d'histoire militaire / équine éphémère. L'école de cavalerie de Saumur a été créée en 1763 pour former les cavaliers à l'armée. La légende veut que l'évêque de Saumur ait fait déménager l'école à Saumur pour faire souffrir la ville protestante (après que les officiers aient été trop amicaux avec les dames locales). Le carrousel régulier est l'un des points forts de l'équitation française. L'école existe toujours aujourd'hui, formant les officiers des régiments de chars et soutenant le Cadre Noir, l'élite des cavaliers français.‎

‎First Edition. An attractive programme for the 1908 Carrousel. The front and rear covers show designs by Grasser, The programme inside, show the name, rank etc of each cavalry officer taking part, and what they are doing during the Carrousel. 4 pages. 320 by 250mm (12œ by 9Ÿ inches). The covers are a little darkened and marked. small pinhole to one edge. Repaired split to the bottom 3-4 cm of the spine. Internally clean but slightly darkened. A nice piece of ephemeral military / equine history. The Cavalry school at Saumur was established in 1763 to train riders in the military. Legend has it that the Bishop of made the school move to Saumur to bring pain to the Protestant town (after the officers had been too friendly with the local ladies). The regular Carousel is one of the highlights of French Horse riding. The school still exists today, training officers of the tank regiments, and supporting the nearby Cadre Noir, France's elite horse riders. .‎

L'avant-propos explique qu'il s'agit d'un conte recueilli auprès d'elfes qui dansent en rond dans la forêt. Six feuillets contiennent des vers manuscrits et chaque feuillet est orné d'un dessin de silhouette. Enfin, un papier de fin naïf représente la lune et les moutons. Les planches sont en bon état, mais légèrement frottées et bosselées. A l'intérieur, les pages sont en bon état, propres et sans marques significatives. ‎An original manuscript. Text in German. Half pink silk Hardback with black leaves. Home made label to the front board. In addition to the blank end paper and illustrated title page, there are 8 further leaves, inked to one side only. The foreword explains how this is a tale picked up from Elves dancing in the round in the forest. There are then six leaves which contain verses in manuscript, and a silhouette drawing to each leaf. Finally, there is a naive end paper with the moon and sheep. The boards are in sound but slightly rubbed and bumped condition. Internally, the pages are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. An attractive piece of home production. First Edition. 23cm x 31cm .‎
