With notes and annotations‎ ‎Manchester: J. Gleave 1813 Joseph Gleave, 1773-1828, was born in Tabley, Cheshire. He was a bookseller and printer, particularly interested in promoting Sunday Schools. The business was taken over in 1828 by his youngest son, also called Joseph. An early Manchester imprint, Manchester was a small town until Arkwright opened the Cotton Mill in 1780. From around 1800, Manchester grew at an astonishing rate, becoming a city in 1835.‎ ‎Contemporary full leather binding, with blind stamped decoration to the spine and boards. Frontispiece. The Weekly Pacquet is Number 16 - Both of the broadsides were issued Friday 24th October 1679. Pagination is continuous (presumably from issue 1) and these leaves are numbered page [121] - [128]. They are held together, but would appear to have been bound together with other issues at some point. 16 pages. 190 by 140mm (7œ by 5œ inches). ‎[ANON]‎ ‎The Advantages of Saccharin in the Manufacture of Aerated Waters, Cordials, &c‎ ‎London Wilson, Salamon, & Co., Ltd 1894‎ ‎Scarce reprint (improved and revised 10th edition) of the original business pamphlet had become necessary as, within three years of the original, the contents were viewed more as a practical text book than a promotional item. At the time, saccharin was considered be a good inclusion, as - to quote this booklet - it never creates acidity or heartburn, and is, in these respects, far healthier than sugar! Blue soft covers are a little creased at edges, and inside the staples holding the booklet together are somewhat rusted. Les plats sont quelque peu frottés, mais l'intérieur est attrayant en raison des couleurs vives réalisées à la main. Although no author is given, several songs here were written by T. ‎[ANON]‎ ‎Three French Caricatures. Trois caricatures françaises‎ ‎1950 Trois jolies originale aquarelles de la taille d'une carte postale, collées sur un fond de papier sombre. Elles sont présentées dans un simple cadre en bois, sous verre. Non signées et anonymes. La première image montre une femme et un officier inspectant un défilé de soldats algériens ( ?) en uniforme avec Fez. L'un d'entre eux fume ! La deuxième image montre une femme s'approchant d'une statue de Saint-Raphaël, apparemment en signe de dévotion, mais cherchant en fait à attraper une bouteille de vin que la statue tient à la main. La troisième montre une file d'attente de gens du cirque ou du carnaval à la réception d'un opticien. Toutes les images sont en bon état, propres et peintes par une main compétente. Chaque image mesure 8,5 cm x 14 cm. Le cadre mesure 21 cm x 48 cm.‎ ‎Three attractive postcard sized original water colours, pasted onto a dark paper background. Held in a simple wooden frame, under glass. Unsigned and anonymous. The first image shows a woman and officer inspecting a parade of Algerian (?) soldiers in uniform with Fez. One of them is smoking! The second shows a woman approaching a statue of St Raphael, seemingly in devotion, but actually reaching for a bottle of wine the statue is holding. The third, shows a line of circus / carnival folk queuing at an optician's reception. All are in good, clean condition and painted by a competent hand. Each image is 8.5cm x 14cm. ‎[ANON]‎ ‎Two graphite and white pastel portraits‎ ‎France NP 1980 Une grande feuille de carton brun pâle sur laquelle figurent deux esquisses au fusain/graphite. L'un représente la tête et les épaules d'un homme noir, l'autre la tête d'une femme. Les deux ont l'air quelque peu pensifs ! Il y a une inscription qui semble dire "De Mike à Julia, j'espère que.... dispute". Il y a également ce qui semble être quelques lignes de poésie au-dessus, mais elles sont indéchiffrables. Il y a une petite tache d'eau sur l'un des bords, qui n'affecte pas les images. Il s'agit de deux beaux portraits, malheureusement sans nom d'artiste, car ils étaient manifestement qualifiés. La feuille mesure 50 cm x 40 cm.‎ ‎A large sheet of pale brown card with two charcoal / graphite sketches upon it. One is a head and shoulders of a black man, to the other side of the sheet is a head of a woman. Both look somewhat pensive! There is an inscription, which seems to read "From Mike to Julia, I hope.... disputes." There are also what appears to be a few lines of poetry above, but these are indecipherable. There is a little water staining to one edge, but not affecting images. These are both beautiful portraits, sadly without artist name, as they were obviously skilled. Toutes deux sur la même feuille de papier crème épais de haute qualité. Impressions profondes sur chacune d'entre elles. Elles semblent avoir été pressées à la main. Parfaites pour l'encadrement. Taille des images : 60 x 100 mm et 60 x 40 mm respectivement. Taille totale de la feuille : 275 x 145 mm (10Ÿ x 5Ÿ inches). Les pangolins sont des mammifères dont la peau est recouverte de grandes écailles de kératine protectrices. De nature nocturne, ils se nourrissent principalement de fourmis et de termites, qu'ils capturent à l'aide de leur très longue langue. Malheureusement, ces charmantes créatures sont fortement menacées par le braconnage et sont les mammifères les plus trafiqués au monde.‎ ‎Two small, but charming, engravings of a Pangolin, or scaly anteater. Unknown artist, the image shows two French soldiers conversing in the foreground outside a sentry post. A couple of youths are talking to another soldier in the background. In the time honoured way of bored soldiers, they complain about their lot. Water colour to paper. Un guide de l'état de la Grande-Bretagne d'un point de vue français. Le premier volume porte sur l'année 1780, le second sur l'année 1781. Il semblerait qu'il était prévu que ce soit une revue annuelle, mais si c'est le cas, cela ne semble pas s'être produit, car Worldcat n'enregistre que ces deux années. Reliure en plein cuir avec décoration dorée au dos. L'étiquette et un panneau de la dorure au dos ont été arrachés, laissant un peu de cuir, mais pas de surface (voir les photos). Le reste des planches est en bon état, légèrement bosselé. A l'intérieur, la signature d'un propriétaire figure sur la page de garde. Le reste est propre et bien rangé. Le demi-titre indique "Etat de l'Angleterre, pour l'année 1780". [viii], 178, [2] pages. Le premier volume est conforme à OCLC : 40428559. Il est suivi d'un autre demi-titre pour l'année 1781, et d'un second volume du livre. [viii], 199, [3] pages. Ce deuxième volume est conforme à OCLC : 630334412. Les deux volumes contiennent les informations détaillées dont les chercheurs ont besoin. The rest of the boards are in good, slightly bumped condition. Inside there is an owner's signature to the end paper. The rest is clean and tidy. The half-title reads "Etat de l'Angleterre, pour l'année 1780." [viii], 178, [2] pages. The first volume conforms to OCLC: 40428559. This is followed by another half title for the year 1781, and a second volume of the book. [viii], 199, [3]. pages. This second volume conforms to OCLC: 630334412. Both volumes are full of the in depth information required by researchers. Including names, addresses, ranks etc. For example, there is a list of the names and addresses of all the London bankers, accounts of the King and court, names of ships and vessels in the navy etc. etc. Text in French. 170 by 100mm (6Ÿ by 4 inches). With Westley's binder's ticket on rear paste-down. Mackenzie's version of the German mediaeval classic was first published in 1860 as a Christmas volume, but stocks were swiftly exhausted and a second edition prepared to meet continuing demand. Mackenzie produced a lengthy additional preface to this second edition, attributing the success of the venture partly to 'the generous and unanimous verdict of the press' but also, surely, to the wonderful illustrations by 'Alfred Crowquill' (A.H. Forrester). Many would-be Christmas readers must have been disappointed for Mazkenzie dates his preface Christmas Eve, but scholars of mediaeval romance and fantasy will find this a most useful edition replete with extensive historical preface and bibliographical and other scholarly appendices. The US edition (T&F of Boston) of the same year is the first American edition of the tale in English.
