Millers Ltd 1939 Souvenir to Commemorate the opening of New Building Tuam St Christchurch
christchurch New Zealand: Bascands Limited 1939. First printing. Cards. Very Good. New Zealand souvenir booklet. Stapled pages unnumbered but 24 pages. Grey card covers with gold and black picture of the building and title. Has been folded so vertical fold through booklet. " In 1939 Lesley Miller moved his successful fabric and fashion business into a specially built five story building on Tuam Street. Just fifteen years before what would become the Millers Department Store had begun in Greymouth. Two years later Lesley uprooted his family and business and made the move to Christchurch. It would be a shift that he wouldnt regret.

From here on in Millers Department Store set a great example; not only in customer service but in the care of staff. Millers were considered a benchmark for other businesses to follow. Staff not only had their own dining room and recreation area but also a full time nurse was available. The building in Tuam Street was also leading the way with all the mod cons including not only a tea lounge but also a milk bar housing New Zealands first escalator.

One of the floors was the home of the manufacturing department where 25000 garments would be produced every week. During WWII Millers also made uniforms for our soldiers. .Sadly the original Millers building in Tuam Street did not survive the earthquakes of 2011. Momotaro - A Japanese Miniature Book
A Japanese woodblock-printed miniature book in orihon leporello format depicting the story of Momotaro the Peach Boy in five multicoloured panels. The story of Momotaro a defeater of demons is one of the most beloved folk tales of Japan. Originating in the 16th century it was related orally until the Edo period at which point it was portrayed in paintings and illustrated books as it has been from then until the 20th century. During WWII the character was employed as wartime propaganda in which the 'demons' became American soldiers. In the present miniature the five panels illustrate the story as follows right to left: 1. A childless elderly couple find a peach by the river. 2. Back at home a boy emerges from the peach the boy is subsequently raised by the couple. 3. Momotaro having matured into a heroic young man departs with his dog to fight a band of demons who have been terrorizing the land. 4. Momotaro meets a monkey and a pheasant who with his dog become allies in the battle. 5. Momotaro and his friends having defeated the demons return home with the demon chief as captive. The book is composed of a heavy fibrous paper; the front cover of which has a woodblock printed panel bearing the title and an image of the Peach Boy among pink flowers. The rear cover is decorated with a white and green floral pattern on red ground. Japan is the only Asian culture with a significant interest in miniature books - as it is with miniatures of many other objects eg. netsuke bonsai etc. Such miniature books are referred to as mamehon or 'bean books'. While popular in Japan to the present day few are found in Western collections. A charming example of the genre. Mid twentieth century fine condition; size 3.8 x 3.0 cm. 3.8 x 3.0 cm. unknown
