Eton - T. Pote 1789 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The 7th edition of this work of ancient history designed to provide material in English for Latin prose composition school exercises. The work consists of four parts: The History of the Heathen Deities; The Ancient History of Greece; The Ancient History of Rome; The Ancient History of Britain. Also included are fold-out maps of Ancient Greece and Britain and a plan of Ancient Rome. The work is scarce. However it was popular in its day as envinced by the fact that this is the seventh edition. It is a charming relic of the standard of Enlightenment education in which 'Classic learning' was prized alongside proficiency in Latin. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD 1906-1973 a noted book collector and diarist. Condition: In half calf. Externally smart with some rubbing to the extremities and to the spine. Some evidence of adhesive from a bookplate to the front pastedown. The first ten pages are marked by a small dark stain. With a stamp from the Selbourne collection to the reverse of the title page and another to page 51. With light foxing here and there throughout and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD. Eton - T.
