London: Smith Elder and Co. 1860-1861. 1860. 8vo. The first three 3 volumes of the Cornhill Magazine each complete. The first volume contains the above account which is 26 pages in length plus 1 copper engraved illustration and 1 large folding map measuring approximately 42 x 22 cm. The volumes contain the above described account and several other accounts. Some wear and age-toning to boards otherwise in very good original condition. A firsthand account of the final and successful commissioned expedition for the search of famed Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin from the private diary of an unidentified member of the expedition edited and presented for publication by Sir Allen William Young who was third officer on the "Fox" and whose name appears in the text. The diary account describes the exhaustive search from 1857-1859 and ongoing efforts to ensure the team's own survival in an exceptionally harsh Greenland winter. The map illustrates this successful voyage as well as earlier attempted searches Franklin's tracts and final fate. With an experienced crew of 25 and with the benefit of an interpreter expedition leader M'Clintock succeeded where others had not. In the summer of 1859 M'Clintock and his party found a document in a cairn on King William Island left by Franklin's second-in-command giving the date of Franklin's death. The message dated April 25 1848 also reported that the ships had been trapped in the ice that many others had died and that the survivors had abandoned the ships and headed south towards the Back River. M'Clintock also found several bodies and an astonishing amount of abandoned equipment and heard more details from the Inuit about the disastrous end of the expedition. Published here in the very first volume of Cornhill Magazine only months after returning to England on 20 September this was the fifth expedition privately financed by Franklin's widow as by this time the British government had abandoned any hopes of rescue. Lady Franklin purchased the 177-ton steam yacht 'Fox' in April 1857. Smith, Elder and Co., 1860-1861. hardcover

East Sussex UK: Jean Boudriot Publications 1992. Limited ed. Hardcover. Fine/good . 472 pp; facsimilie edition of one of the rarest English books on shipbuilding orignally printed in 1788 and probably limited to no more that 200 copies. This facsimile edition was limited to 750 copies; this copy being No. 86. THE SHIPBUILDER'S REPOSITORY contains all the principal dimensions and scantlings for every type of vessel in the Royal Navy in the late 1780's. It was freely plagiarised by Steel in his ELEMENTS AND PRACTICE OF NAVAL ARCHITECTURE of 1805 and was a major inspiration to William Hackett in his design of the U.S. frigate ESSEX. In its day the REPOSITORY was no doubt considered by its readers as a useful if prosaic work more of a compilation than of any real originality. However for the modern student of shipbuilding of the last quarter of the 18th century such faint praise is undoubtedly inappropriate for the book is a precious mine of information which in many case one would have to search long and hard in various archives to find. It may be that the book would have been better known today had it contained the complete set of draughts as intended; the only draught which in fact appeared was that of a proposed 80-gun ship which was never built. Consequently the publishers have sought to remedy this situation by including an extensive selection of draughts; reprinted from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich: ROYAL SOVEREIGN IMPREGNABLE BRUNSWICK STANDARD ASSURANCE LATONIA FLORA SOL THISBE PORCUPINE WEAZLE ROYAL CHARLOTTE DENMARK and ORESTES

Jean Boudriot Publications hardcover
