Bound in publisher's dark green card boards cloth spine Victorian lettering and presentation of publisher's details printed in black to front cover matching decorative border to rear. Some discolouration to front board and noticeable edgewear age toned throughout. Very Good. The famous "Battle of Bunker Hill" fought on June 17 1775 actually took place on Breed's Hill the site of the existing Bunker Hill Monument. This giant granite obelisk marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution. The Battle of Bunker Hill pitted a newly-formed and inexperienced colonial army against the more highly trained and better-equipped British. Although the British Army ultimately prevailed in the battle the colonists greatly surprised the British by repelling two major assaults and inflicting great casualties; the colonists lost between 400 and 600 combined casualties including popular patriot leader and newly-elected Major-General Dr. Joseph Warren who was killed during the third and final assault. The first monument on the site was an 18-foot wooden pillar with a gilt urn erected in 1794 by King Solomon's Lodge of Masons to honour fallen patriot and mason Dr. Joseph Warren. In 1823 a group of prominent citizens formed the "Bunker Hill Monument Association" to construct a more permanent and significant monument to commemorate the famous battle. Unlike other variants of the first edition the pagination in this copy is correct. Rebacked with new endpapers. Full calf. Published anonymously this is sometimes attributed to Nathaniel Crouch or to John Phillips. It was later published as part two of "The Secret History of the Last Four Monarchs of Great Britain". Part of a spate of secret histories published during the late seventeenth century by Whig Polemicists this is a highly critical and anti-Catholic history of both reigns. Just two years previous was the Glorious Revolution and few years before that had been the Popish Plot. Condition: Very good. These items were produced and manufactured by and for white audiences that enhanced the perception of white racial superiority and class status. These type of items are particularly challenging to many communities however many scholars and private collectors alike agree these materials are historical records and reminders of the racist history of the United States and should not be invisible. The puzzle postcard is an example of mass produced racial stereotyping manufactured for an actual mailing enclosure. Intended to celebrate Britain 's glorious national past in a creative range of historical periods each issue had a full colour illustrated themed wrapper with black & white drawings inside. Each issue generally ran 32 pages. Extremely popular in their day these junior magazines had a lengthy run waning only as alternative forms of entertainments gradually took over their audience's attention. Penny Dreadful Dime Novels were the American version was a term applied to nineteenth century British fiction publications usually lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks each part costing a penny. The term however soon came to encompass a variety of publications that featured cheap sensational fiction such as story papers and booklet "libraries." The Penny Dreadfuls were printed on cheap pulp paper and were aimed primarily at teenage boys from the working class though there is some evidence that many girls read them as well. Penny Parts The penny part stories got underway in the 1830s originally as a cheaper alternative for the working class adults but by the 1850s the serial stories were aimed exclusively at teenagers. The stories themselves were reprints or sometimes rewrites of Gothic thrillers such as The Monk or The Castle of Otranto as well as new stories about famous criminals. Some of the most famous of these penny part stories were The String of Pearls which ostensibly introduced Sweeney Todd The Mysteries of London inspired by the French serial The Mysteries of Paris and Varney the Vampire. Highwaymen were popular heroes. Black Bess or the Knight of the Road outlining the largely imaginary exploits of real-life highwayman Dick Turpin continued for 254 episodes. Working class boys who could not afford a penny a week often formed clubs that would share the cost passing the flimsy booklets from reader to reader. Other enterprising youngsters would collect a number of consecutive parts then rent the volume out to friends. Penny Dreadfuls In 1866 Boys of England was introduced as a new type of publication an eight page magazine that featured serial stories as well as articles and shorts of interests. It was printed on the same cheap paper though sporting a larger format than the penny parts. Numerous competitors quickly followed with such titles as Boys Leisure Hour Boys Standard Young Men of Great Britain etc. As the price and quality of fiction was the same these storypapers also fell under the general definition of Penny Dreadfuls also known as Penny Bloods or Blood and Thunders in their early days. American dime novels were edited and rewritten for a British audience. These appeared in booklet form such as the Boys First Rate Pocket Library. Theodore Edward Hook 1788-1841 English man of letters and newspaper editor best known for his practical jokes including the Berners St. Hoax. The source of the pseudonym used for this work is the Hungarian patriot Count Tekeli Prince of Transylvannia who was the subject of a Hooks' relatively successful three act melodrama London 1806. This present work to which such notables as Warren Hastings William Huskisson and 'Monk' Lewis had subscribed includes 'The Rape of the Kiss' in three cantos and translations from Petrarch.
