Usage de Globes- Handwritten Workbook
Anon: Anon c1780. Leather. Good. 9" by 7". Anon. A unique handwritten volume covering predominantly Astronomy and the Use of Globes. Handwritten in a neat and legible hand across 400 pages numbered 1-90 and 1-300. Occasionally with blank page breaks but continuous numbering. An interesting specimen this volume contains exercises diagrams and notes on science geography and astronomy. Primarily focusing on the Use of Globes it contains four diagrams of celestial movements and pages of charts and lists relating to the planets and stars. Written in French with one passage in English describing the fixed stars of the Lion's Tale and Virgin's Spike. The first 90 pages are concerned with broader geography and written in a question and answer style. The second section contains explanations on the use of Globes both terrestrial and celestial and the information that can be gleaned from a practical application of this knowledge. Similar in style to 'Introduction to the Use of Globes' by W Field the text follows an instructive pattern whereby the information is transcribed and then applied to a series of problems. The author seems to have been working through Thomas Hood's 'The Use of both the Globes Celestial and Terrestrial' and making a practical collection of notes for personal or educational use. One section is titled 'Responses aux Questions de ''appendix qui est a la suite de l'introduction a l'usage des Globes par mr Molineux' that is 'responses to questions in the appendix to the introduction of the use of Globes by Molyneux'. Emery Molyneux was an English Elizabethan maker of Globes and his terrestrial and celestial globes were the first to be made in England. Though Molyneux published his own treatise on Globes entitled 'The Globes Celestial and Terrestrial Set Forth in Plano' it has now been lost. In the same year Thomas Hood published 'The Use of Both the Globes' which referenced Molyneux's works. Because of this we believe it is Hood's work to which the author of this manuscript is referring. The work has been dated based on the predictions of celestial movements made in the text up to the year 1800. In a full mottled calf binding wiith gilt detailing. Externally worn with loss to leather at extremities and spine. Worn spine label reading 'usage de globes'. Front pastedown with ridge as quirk of binding. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Personal label to front pastedown. Internally generally firmly bound. Approx 100 smaller pages bound in to front and 304 full sized pages follwoing 300 numbered. 2 pages loosening to rear block. Pages bright generally clean with marginal age toning and handling marks. Occasional scattered spots. Creasing to foredge. Good Anon hardcover

Victorian Gothic Revival PAPIER-MACHE BINDING: notebook with handwritten prayers
No publisher 1850. Striking 19th-century black papier-mache or 'carton-pierre' black 'Monastic' boards originally used on Eyre & Spottiswood's 1847 12mo edition of the bible and their 1848 Book of Common Prayer. These editions were originally produced with a matching papier-mache spine. This volume however has these papier-mache boards re-applied remarkably intact to an originally blank notebook in a black calf binding. Raised bands to spine. Spine has been personalised with initials 'A P' in gilt gothic lettering near base. Moulded papier-mache boards in deep relief have Christ with right hand raised in blessing to centre with elaborate frame incorporating gothic tracery and vine acanthus and lily motifs. Delicate gilt decor to papier-mache board edges. Slight rubbing to spine and mild wear to papier-mache boards with some minor cracking to edges and slight chipping to corner. Small loss to top of gothic arch relief to front board. All edges gilt. Blind decor to turn-ins. Endpapers reinforced with white cloth tape at gutters with the same reinforcement to first interior pages at gutter legacy of an early repair. Hinges sound. 12mo 9.5 x 15cm. Minor scattered foxing. 38pp are inscribed in a neat block script likely mid-20th century presumably by 'A P' with prayers all written to rectos leaving versos blank some divided by subject 'elections' 'angels' leaving the majority of pages blank. A sympathetic re-use of these 1840s boards with the inscribed prayers ensuring they continued in use in a devotional context. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. An eclectic collection of manuscript recipes produced across the nineteenth-century. Written in multiple hands likely beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending in the 1920s this is a fascinating palimpsest of domestic life across the Victorian period. Contains cookery baking cosmetic and medicinal recipes. One of the authors frequently cites the origin of each recipe giving an insight into the bookish and social resources required to assemble such a collection in one volume. Loss to spine tips and scuffs to spine boards and corners a little rubbed. Occasional foxing to contents and some pages attached to one another in erratic ways for example with a nail or glue. Some recipes in the final gathering are upside-down- it was common to flip hand written recipe books and begin a new 'upside down' section from the rear often with tonics and medicinal cures as is the case in this book. I found a few mentions of Casley's work online. The ID and date are on the back. The photo is in very good condition with some fade.</p>

In 1804 he became director-general of museums and was instrumental in bringing foreign masterpieces into the Louvre as the spoils of conquest. His accounts of his travels and his treatise on ancient monuments contain collections of his engravings of works of art. Viztlipuztli idolum Mexicanorum
1671. Copper-line engraving. 290mm by 345mm platemark. Depicts the interior of the Aztec palace of Viztlipuztli - an Aztec idol. Viztlipuztli was a 'woodden Image like a Man upon his Head stood a Plume of feathers on his left right Hand held a white Shield on which stuck five Feathers and on the top a Laurel Bough; next the Shield lay four Arrows pretended to be sent from Heaven behind on his Shoulders appears Wings on his feet ended in Claws hung round about with Precious Jems. The Curtain behind which this Idol sat was not drawn open except on Feast-Day'.<br /> From John Ogilby's 'America: Being the Latest and Most Accurate Description of the New World' published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus 'Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld' published in Amerstdam although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views.
