‎An Accurate Map of South America Drawn from the best Authorities"‎

‎np London 1760. Copper Engraving. Very Good. Copper engraving on laid paper. Measurement border to border: 22.5 x 17.3 cm. 8.9" x 6.3". Sheet measurements: 30 x 20.7 cm. 11.8" x 8.1" Condition: a mild crease which begins just above the "C" in Southern Ocean and winds its way northeast always staying in the empty void of the Southern Ocean terminating just below Ascension Island; 1 cm. closed tears at both top and bottom edges contained within margins never invading borders; mild foxing in spots and a faint offsetting from what looks to be another map most likely: Good-to-Very Good. A handsome map which we greatly appreciate hasn't had to endure any later hand coloring. Here's a 2001 description from Old World Auctions: "Charming small map of the continent with a decorative cartouche and compass rose. Considerable detail along the coasts with Indian names in the interior. Part of the African continent is shown at right and the Solomon Islands are shown in the Pacific. Several discoveries are noted by name and date."

unknown‎

‎London: Sold by C. Etherington and G. Lister 1782 First edition. Appears to have been published in two parts in the same year; this volume contains the two parts but only the second title page survives which is dated 1782. No author is credited only the names of the witnesses at the end of each of their evidence. Hardcover book . Original and very worn full leather binding with no title evident to spine perhaps as produced. 112pp part one and 107pp part two. Green tinted page edges. No ilustrations just the text of the trial which took place at the Consistory Court of Doctor's Commons apparently between 1778 and 1781 and accused Mrs Newton of adultery with 5 named people and 'diverse other persons'. It boasts of 'Containing the Whole of the Evidence in that very Extraorordinary Trial.' The book is complete apart from the first title page as mentioned but is overall in Poor condition. The very worn binding with losses and tears to spine is also very slack and partly detached from spine with the pages mostly held together though the last page is detached present and the last page of part one has marginal losses with a few words of the text missing but mostly of a publisher's note at the bottom. The paper is soiled at the ends but otherwise generally clean. Photos available. London: Sold by C. Etherington and G. Lister, 1782 hardcover‎

In the original Burgundy pictorial cloth blocked in black and gold a little rubbed very sl. faded to the spine and a small 'nibble' to the bottom of the rear board but overall a VG sound copy. Includes 'Other Tales of Interest' and in fact 'Mary Ogilvie' only covers the first 139 pp of the book. There are small 2.3 cm x 1.5 cm oval library stamps easily erasable! to the reverse of the full page illustrations and one at the end of the book but NO other indications that this was once in a library. ‎Germany: Auf Kosten Des Verfassers By the Author. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1796. Presumed 1st Edition. Hardcover. Attractively bound in half leather spine and corners with speckled paper-covered boards. 5 raises bands to the pine with gilt banding and gilt floral decorations to each compartment and a gilt title label. Some rubbling to the extremities as to be expected but hinges sound and overall near VG. All edges red marbled endpapers with an integral green ribbon marker inside. 2 214 pp. This copy belonged to a member of the VIVIAN family of Swansea and has the name of 'John Henry Vivian' and the brother of Hussey Vivian 1st Baron Vivian written neatly in script in old ink on the top of the front free endpaper. TEXT IN GERMAN. AS far as I can gather this was published as a 'counterpart' to Knigges' most famous sociological work - "Umgang Mit Menschen". Amongst other things this is a Confrontation with or Reply to Knigge & his attitude to the Illuminati order. Quite scarce. See Images ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 216 pages . ‎Anon (Mungo Park and Others?)‎

‎Scenes of Travel and Adventure in Central Africa‎

‎London: Thomas Nelson and Sons. Fair with no dust jacket. 1851. Reprint. Hardcover. In the original publishers Light Brown cloth covered boards with blind stamped decoration to the front and rear covers but with quite bright gilt titling/decoration/illustration to the spine. All corners and the head/tail of the spine are 'bumped/rubbed with a small split to the cloth either side of the top and bottom of the spine. There is a fading Ink blotch about 1.5 cms to the bottom half of the front cover. Overall the covers are quite clean and it is an attractive little book. All edges gilt. Internally it lacks the first plain yellow free endpaper and there are No Inscriptions. The front inner hinge has sprung. The text/guttering has some grubby marks/thumbing/spotting and a centimetre round brown spot running through the blank margin from pp 45-55. Otherwise the text is clean and bright - Overall. Illustrated with a tissue guarded b/w Frontispiece and an engraved Title page with a b/w vignette. There is also a separate printed Title page. 5 other tissue guarded b/w plates. The heavier duty paper all the plates/engravings are on has browned quite heavily but mainly on the blank reverse and the blank edges - the small tissue guards have done their jobs pretty well protecting the images - but for full protection they should have been bigger! ! . 447 pp. Contents include chapters such as : - 'Progress of African Discovery'; 'The Trade between Europe and the natives of Africa'; 'Observation on the Native Tribes'; 'Privations and ill treatment of Park' Mungo Park ; 'Oppression and cruelty of the Moors'; 'Occurences during the Author's confinement at Benowm'; 'Discovery of the Niger'; 'Kindness of the Mansa of Sibidooloo'; 'Observations on Slavery in Africa'; 'The Trade in Gold dust and Ivory'; 'Travels of Horneman Nicholls Roentgen and Adams'; 'Laing & Caillie'; etc etc. Probably some sort of reprint/pirate edition of Mungo Park's 'Travels in the interior districts of Africa'. Attributed to Mungo Park cf OCLC. but with additions and other African Travels added in . Overall the book is a little better than it sounds - it is generally clean and an attractive little copy - but with some faults as noted above. See Images. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall .
