Inscribed by Faulkner on the title-page to Else Faulkner's liaison when he visited Stockholm to collect the Nobel prize. Book is fine in a very nice example of the scarce dustwrapper price-clipped scuffed along the edges. <br/><br/>Faulkner met Else Jonsson 1912-1996 when he visited Stockholm in December 1950 to receive the Nobel Prize. Else was the widow of journalist Thorsten Jonsson 19101950 reporter for "Dagens Nyheter" in New York from 1943 to 1946 who had interviewed Faulkner in 1946 and introduced his works to Swedish readers. At the banquet in 1950 where Faulkner and Else met publisher Tor Bonnier referred to Else as widow of the man responsible for Faulkner being awarded the prize. Faulkner signed this contract which transferred distribution rights of the film based on Faulkner's story "Turnabout" to the Loew's Corporation. "By an assignment dated September 26 1932 I conveyed to William B. Hawks all rights of every kind. in my story. TURNABOUT published in the March 5 1932 issue of the Saturday Evening Post and registered for copyright. On November 4 1932 William B. Hawks conveyed all. rights. to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. your predecessor. In my assignment. it was provided that I. secure. renewals of all copyrights.The copyright of March 1 1932. was renewed in my name on March 4 1959.Accordingly I now assign and confirm to you. the same rights in the work entitled TURNABOUT." Signed in full on the signature line "William Faulkner.". The film referenced in our document is titled "Today We Live" released in 1933 by MGM. According to the Turner Classics Movies web site this film is listed as being distributed by Loew's which was the parent company of MGM from 1924-1959. The story is about an American World War I aviator who befriends a British torpedo boat pilot and comes to see the war from a different perspective. The film considered a romance drama was produced and directed by Howard Hawks and starred Joan Crawford Gary Cooper Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Faulkner provided dialogue for the film. Hawks purchased the option on the story but Irving Thalberg then Vice President of MGM forced Hawks to hire Crawford for the film and forced Faulkner to write a love interest for the men. Crawford was under contract for MGM at the time. <br/><br/>All of this weakened Faulkner's original story and thus the film's plot. In addition the film apparently included inappropriate use of non-period costumes and an unconvincing Crawford. "Today We Live" turned into a failure. According to a movie review in the "New York Times" on April 15 1933 by Mordaunt Hall this "first of William Faulkner's literary efforts to reach the screen. is understood to have been amplified in the studio by the author. is at times vague and cumbersome. It was written as a screenplay to be used on television. Unfortunately the project never went through. Original final draft shooting script with color rewrite pages for the film Sanctuary written by James Poe based on the novel by William Faulkner directed by Tony Richardson and starring Bradford Dillman. This was Dillman’s working script with his scene notations throughout. With Dillman’s estate stamp which reads “From the Library of Bradford Dillmanâ€. Bradbound 138 pages dated July 15 1960. Dillman plays the character of Gowan Stevens with Lee Remick as Temple Drake and Yves Montand as Candy Man. An earlier film adaptation of Faulkner’s 1931 novel is the 1933 film The Story of Temple Drake starring Miriam Hopkins in the title role. A lightly handled copy with some minor darkening to the covers and a bit of edge wear. Bradford Dillman 1930-2018 was one of Hollywood’s best regarded actors among his peers and the public. He was trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and knew James Dean in early television. Dillman rose to sudden fame with his appearance in Richard Fleisher’s film Compulsion 1959 with Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles and continued in movies throughout his career in such films as The Way We Were The Iceman Cometh The Enforcer Sudden Impact Crack in the Mirror Escape From the Planet of the Apes Francis of Assisi Piranha The Swarm etc. A great success in television Dillman appeared in a remarkable number of shows and made for TV movies in a variety of genres including Mission Impossible The Man from U.N.C.L.E. An original daybill poster for the Australian release of the 1949 film adaptation of Faulkner's novel based on a screenplay by Ben Maddow directed by Clarence Brown and starring David Brian Claude Jarman Jr. Will Geer et al. Original printed wrappers the rear wrapper printing Ernest Hemingway's poem "Ultimately"; publisher's board slipcase. FIRST EDITION LIMITED ISSUE number 483 of 525 numbered copies. This was the first book issued by Milwaukee's Casanova Press designed by Paul Romaine who he states on the colophon "is obviously very unlike Aldus or Bodoni but who is very young and has many years to correct the glaring defects herein of composition." The articles and poems in Salmagundi first appeared in the New Orleans' magazine The Double Dealer and were reprinted with Faulkner's permission. The inclusion of Hemingway's poem on the rear wrapper was done as "just a whim" but "a whim inspired by one of the oddest coincidences in modern literature: William Faulkner's poem Portrait and Ernest Hemingway's poem Ultimately both appear on page 337 of the June 1922 issue of The Double Dealer. The meticulous Louis Cohn will be glad to know this I am sure since he forgot to include it in his complete bibliography of Hemingway's works. He also left out the names of the horses from whence came the glue to bind Hemingway's books" Preface. Promotional material for the 1945 film "To Have or Have Not" featuring 12 pages of adveristing and poster material and fourteen pages of articles about the film and its performers. The screenplay was adapted from Hemingway's "worst book" in Hawks' estimation by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner the latter's participation making it the only film on which two winners of the Nobel Prize have ever collaborated. It was Bacall's debut film and where she and Bogart first met. <br/>Faulkner wrote the second revised final version of the script and was responsible for its change of setting from Cuba to Martinique. Berlin: Illustrierter Film-kurier 1937. 8pp. Quarto. Pictorial self-wrappers. Heavily illustrated. Creased snag to spine at middle without loss otherwise a very good copy of a fragile item. The German issue of the German language FILM- KURIER turned over to the third film for which Faulkner actually received screen credit as "Story by" upon final release in 1937. The title is at slight variance from the release title appearing on the issues printed in Vienna the format is larger and some of the illustrative matter is different. The script was based on George S. King's novel and at various times involved additional work by Sam Hellman Lamar Trotti and Gladys Lehman as well as uncredited final revisions by associate producer Nunnally Johnson. The film was directed by Tay Garnett and starred Wallace Beery Warner Baxter Mickey Rooney et al all of whom are featured in the imagery in this issue along with two images of the abuse of slaves.
