Not to be confused with the edition Liveright issued in 1955 in deep blue cloth stamped in gold with the jacket now varnished and different copy on the flaps "probably a belated attempt by Liveright to capitalize on the Nobel Prize acclaim." Petersen Spine toe barely bumped jacket lightly rubbed with several tiny edge tears but a superb example tightly bound and clean throughout. Petersen A4.3. While in Paris in late 1925 Faulkner started a novel titled “Mosquito†but left it unfinished. After his first novel Soldiers’ Pay was published in February 1926 he started work again on Mosquitoes now retitled drawing on material from two unpublished short stories “Adolescence†and “Don Giovanni†and several of his poems and early sketches. "Unique among Faulkner’s works it directly addresses artistic matters in arguments and debates put into the mouths of several characters primarily Dawson Fairchild and Julius Kauffman. Cheaper than any copy close to this fine and finer than any copy close to this cheap. Set aboard a yacht on Lake Pontchartrain over four days the novel assembles a party of New Orleans artists writers dilettantes and socialites whose endless boozy self-regarding talk amounts to very little—which is precisely Faulkner's point. A satire of the Vieux Carré literary scene he had recently inhabited Mosquitoes is the last book Faulkner wrote before discovering Yoknapatawpha County and the voice that would carry him through The Sound and the Fury As I Lay Dying and the great novels that followed. On a yacht on Lake Pontchartrain a diverse group of strangely associated people including a social climber famous writer sculptor and Englishman embark on a four-day excursion from the city of New Orleans. Evidently inspired by an similar excursion from Faulkner's own life the novel offered a tongue in cheek criticism of the repetitive and mundane preoccupations of the New Orleans creative community Faulkner was immersed in at the time. In this early novel Faulkner revealed a more witty urbane side producing a work much different from the grim "Soldier's Pay" and "Sound and The Fury". Very good example some rubbing to the spine lettering tiny previous owner's signature top corner of the verso of the front free endpaper. Supplied is the dust jacket from the circa 1950 "New Edition" published by Liveright after Faulkner won the Nobel Prize.
