Original Typed Letter Signed from Harold Ober to William Faulkner asking for changes in the commencement date of payments by Lemuel Ayers for his intended play production of “Requiem For a Nun.†Signed by William Faulkner at the bottom agreeing to the changes and countered by Lemuel Ayers. Faulkner wrote “Requiem For a Nun†specifically for his actress friend and fellow Mississippian Ruth Ford. In turn Ford spent the next eight years attempting to mount a production of the play on Broadway production which she did not succeed at doing until 1959. During this process Lemuel Ayers eventually bowed out as producer and was replaced. 1 page, quarto unknown books

Petersen A32.1a In Requiem for a Nun Faulkner revisits the story of Temple Drake a young Mississippi woman who becomes the victim of the criminal assistant of a notorious Tennessee moonshiner. He first introduced these characters in his 1931 novel Sanctuary. Now a grown and married woman Temple must reconcile with the horrors of her past as she attempts to provide a more normal life for her own child. Interestingly Requiem for a Nun is presented in the form of a three-part play interwoven with prose sections and it is divided into three parts: Act One "The Courthouse A Name for the City;" Act Two "The Golden Dome Beginning Was the Word;" and Act Three "The Jail Nor Even Yet Quite Relinquish--." Notably this text contains one of Faulkner's best-known phrases "The past is never dead. It is not even past" which refers to the understanding that our present identity is inherently linked to our history an idea that is present in much of Faulkner's work and throughout the Southern Gothic genre. First edition second state in first state dust jacket; with corrected "Chocktaw" on p. 21 "lock" on p. 24; jacket price of $3.00 and artist E. McKnight Kauffer incorrectly identified as M. McKnight Kauffer. Cloth a bit tanned along the edges; spine tips bumped and a little frayed; contemporary inscription on FFEP otherwise internally clean and unmarked. The inscription is kind of cute: "10/24/51 Alas I was so late So sorry you couldn't wait But if you're not mad at all you'll see me again next time I call. To Eve From Ed." Dust jacket chipped alongt the edges not infringing on text or images; joints a bit scuffed; spine somewhat sunned; VG in mylar presents nicely. <br/><br/> Random House hardcover books

Slight fading to spine as usual with a couple of points of soiling discoloration and wear. A decent example of a jacket that is very prone to wear. This work was a sequel of sorts to Sanctuary continuing the story of Temple Drake and was Faulkner's first publication after winning the Nobel Prize. It was later translated into French by Albert Camus. <br/><br/> Random House hardcover books
