For nearly three years he had been immersed in the aftermath of the Nootka Crisis of 1789 a dispute between Britain and Spain over sovereignty in the North Pacific. He was journeying north as his government's commissioner to hand over Spanish-occupied territory at Nootka. This book offers the first published English translation of Bodega's journal a remarkable account of his travels along the Northwest Coast of America encounters with Native peoples�most notably Chief Maquinna�and the friendship that developed between Bodega and his British counterpart George Vancouver. Until now Bodega's journal has been available only in Spanish publications or in manuscript form. The 1775 Journal of Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra compiled during a Spanish survey sent from Mexico to explore the north-west coast of America. Edited by Herbert K. Beals. Bodega's journal records the voyage's travails hardships discoveries and eventual return. His small schooner Sonora was not designed for open-ocean voyaging; a landing party was attacked and killed; midway into the voyage the Sonora became separated from her flagship; and later she was nearly capsized by a massive wave. <br /><br />2. The 1827 Journal of HMS Beagle Commander Pringle Stokes in the Strait of Magellan. Edited by R. J. Campbell. This is an account of a detached operation in very difficult weather conditions in the western part of the strait. The introdution includes remarks on the hydrographic history of the strait from its discovery to the inception of the survey. <br /><br />3. Journal kept by Midshipman Joseph Henry Kay during the voyage of HMS Chanticleer 1828-31. Edited by Ann Savours and Anita McConnell. The voyage was to make observations in the South Atlantic to determine the shape of the Earth and to ascertain the longitudes of a number of ports. Kay's lively diary describes the Chanticleer's encounters with warships of the Brazilian navy largely manned by Englishmen and his struggles to take observations during gales snowstorms fierce squalls and constant chilling rain nevertheless remaining cheerful in the company of his fellow midshipmen. <br /><br />4. Jacob Wainwright's Diary of the Transportation of Dr Livingstone's Body to the Coast May 1873 to February 1874. Edited by Roy Bridges. Wainwright was the young African freed slave who carved the inscription on the tree beneath which David Livingstone's heart was buried. This diary covers his journey back to the coast with the body. The remarkable record throws important light on conditions in East Africa in the 1870s as well as on the tragic life of Wainwright himself. ‎Weimar - Germany: Landes - Industrie - Comptoir 1804. 8vo 16 pages contained in a complete 200 page monthly issue of the Geographische phemeriden attractively bound in brown cloth with marbled boards and gilt spine. Very good condition and very crisp inside. Text in German. This is the 1804 Edition of an obscure and rare Geographical publication issued in Weimar/ Germany in the late 1700's and early 1800's named 'Geographische Ephemeriden.' It contains a portrait of Hernando Maghellan and a 16 page report about the Spanish Voyages to North America. Little was known about these Spanish voyages as the Spanish kept things secret. In 1791 Alessandro Malaspina undertook a search for the Northwest Passage. He surveyed the Alaska coast from Yakutat Bay to Prince William Sound. At Yakutat Bay the expedition made contact with the Tlingit. The expedition's scientists made a study of the tribe recording information on social mores language economy warfare methods and burial practices. During the return to Mexico Malaspina's expedition spent a month at the Spanish outpost in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island see below. The expedition made a study of the Nootka. The two ships then sailed south to Mexico stopping at the Spanish settlement and mission at Monterey California on the way. Simultaneously an expedition under Francisco de Eliza exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca discovered an entrance to the Strait of Georgia which prompted further investigation. In Acapulco Malaspina took over two schooners the Sutil and Mexicana placed them under the command of one of his officers Dionisio Alcal� Galiano and had them sail north to explore the Strait of Georgia. Galiano's expedition took place in 1792 at the same time as that of George Vancouver. The two expeditions met in the Strait of Georgia and worked together to map the waters and establish the insularity of Vancouver Island. First Edition. Landes - Industrie - Comptoir hardcover‎
