‎THE ILLUSTRATED HEBREW BIBLE: 75 SELECTED STORIES‎

‎Original Cloth. 4to. 240 pages. 31 cm. First edition. With 130 full color illustrations. “In The Illustrated Hebrew Bible, Dr. Ellen Frankel, Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Publication Society, presents 75 stories from the major narratives of the Bible, capturing the rhythm and drama of this ancient Hebrew text. The stories told here - forty from the Torah, thirty-five from Prophets and Writings - begin with the creation of the world and move through Israel's history, ending with return to the Promised Land from foreign exile. These allegories, parables, and folktales have been retold in a lyrical English that every reader will find accessible. No other literature has inspired more artistic expression than the Bible. From centuries-old synagogue mosaics to the most contemporary paintings and sculpture, biblical themes have held pride of place in the art of every western nation. The Illustrated Hebrew Bible, in 240 pages and with more than 130 full-color reproductions, features a stunning range of images - from ancient artifacts and illuminated Hebrew manuscripts to Renaissance paintings and the art of today. Works by renowned artists such as William Blake, Rembrandt, Jack Levine, Marc Chagall, and Harry Lieberman enrich and deepen our understanding of the biblical text. This unique pairing of art and narration will entertain and inspire all who join in celebrating the greatest story every told. ” (Publishers Description) Subjects: Bible stories, English - Old Testament. Bible stories, English - Old Testament. Light wear to jacket, otherwise fresh. Very good condition. (ART-22-23)‎

‎ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR DIE RELIGIÖSEN INTERESSEN DES JUDENTHUMS. Complete in 3 volumes‎

‎Berlin: M. Simion, 1844-45. Cloth ; 8vo. 363, 488, 488pages. Marbled boards. In German. Complete in 3 volumes. Only edition. Monthly review and a platform for Frankel's opinions on Reform. Among other innovations he believed that the messianic belief, which expressed the "pious wish for the independence of the Jewish people" was of importance for the survival and development of Judaism, and that it brought a new spirit and vigor into the life of German Jews, even though "they already had a fatherland which they would not leave. " Dr. Zacharias Frankel (1801-1875) , was born in Prague. After receiving a talmudic education under Bezalel Ronsburg, he studied philosophy, natural sciences, and philology in Budapest (1825-30) . In 1831 the Austrian government appointed him district rabbi (Kreisrabbiner) of Leitmeritz (Litomerice) , and he settled in Teplitz (Teplice) where he was elected local rabbi. He was the first Bohemian rabbi with a secular academic education and one of the first to preach in German. In 1836 he was called by the Saxon government to Dresden to act as chief rabbi. The publication of his study on the Jewish oath (see below) led to its abolition in several German states. He declined a call to Berlin in 1843, mainly because the Prussian government would not meet his stipulations (complete legal recognition of the Jewish faith-until then merely "tolerated; " denial of support to missionary activities among the Jews, etc. ) . In 1854, after having actively advocated its establishment, Frankel became director of the newly founded Juedisch-Theologisches Seminar at Breslau, where he remained until his death. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Periodicals. OCLC lists 15 copies worldwide. Boards detached; backstrips missing. Light age staining. Good condition. Scarce and important. (gero-1-1)‎

‎First edition. Original green illustrated wrappers with painting of abstract faces. 4to. 10 pages; 21 cm. In German and English. Tile translates to “Visions from the Inferno. ” A program from a museum exhibition of Adolf Frankl’s work featuring 8 pages of color facsimiles of his paintings. Adolf Frankl was a Czechoslovakian artist. “In 1944, on Yom Kippur his family was transported to the Sered camp. His wife and two children escaped from the transport. In November 1944, he was transported to Auschwitz; received prisoner number B-14395. On January 18 1945, during the death march to Gleiwitz, he escaped to a forest and to the Althammer camp where he hid. In 1945, after his liberation he moved to Krakow and from there to Bratislava, where he was reunited with his family” (Yadvashem.org 2017) . “For years he was haunted by memories of the time he had spent suspended between life and death, by visions which would not let him sleep. A doctor friend suggested that he should try to get rid of these oppressive memories by expressing in pictorial terms the horrors he had known. This led the painter to produce a series of works which are unique in the history of art. ” SUBJECT(S) : Art, Holocaust art, Jewish art. Includes two translations of works by August Ludwig Frankl into the Hebrew by notable Jewish thinkers. 1st, a translation of Frankl’s ‘Aus Egypten’ by “Avrom Ber Gotlober (1811 – 1899) was a Jewish writer, poet, playwright, historian, journalist and educator. He mostly wrote in Hebrew, but also wrote poetry and dramas in Yiddish… As a teacher in the state-sponsored schools for Jews, he taught and influenced two founders of Yiddish literature: Mendele Mocher Sforim, whom Sholom Aleichem called ‘the zeyde (grandfather) of us all’, and Abraham Goldfaden, the founder of the professional Yiddish theater. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) 2nd, it includes a trnaslation of Frankl’s ‘Der Primator’ by “Max Letteris (1800 – 1871) , an Austrian Jewish scholar and the foremost poet of the Galician Haskala. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) Ludwig August Frankl (1810 – 1894) “was a Jewish Bohemian-Austrian writer and poet. He was a friend of Nikolaus Lenau. Also, he corresponded with Petar II Petrovic Njegos of Montenegro before he died in 1851. Frankl's Gusle, Serbische Nationallieder was dedicated to Vuk Karadžic's daughter in 1852. His object was to present some of the songs in Vuk which had not yet been translated, and he took the greatest pains to reproduce in German the metrical effect of the Serbian original. ” The book is dedicated to Elise Herz, who likely financed its publication, Herz (1788–1868) was an Austrian philanthropist who commissioned Frankl to help found the Children's Asylum in Jerusalem.
