‎1st Edition: Original Boards with Original Dust Jacket. 8vo. 437 pages ; 21 cm. In the original Czech, later issued in English as “A Box of Lives. ” This is a beautiful copy of the scarce first edition with the original illustrated dust jacket. “Norbert Frýd (born Norbert Fried) (1913 – 1976) was a Czech writer, journalist and diplomat. He is known mainly for his autobiographical novel Krabice živých (A Box of Lives, 1956) , in which he describes his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. During World War II, he was imprisoned in the Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Dachau-Kaufering concentration camps… The plot is set in the last months of 1944, in the fictional concentration camp of Gigling. The main character, the young intellectual Zdenek Roubík, is an assistant in the camp office. One of his jobs is to maintain the card index of the inmates, hence the title of the novel, ‘A Box of Lives. ’ In the camp, Roubík gradually manages to overcome the apathy and depression caused by the death of his brother and he becomes more actively involved in camp life. The author attempts to depict everyday life, social interactions and relationships in the camp, and the work and hardships of the inmates. The description of the SS guards in the camp is a focus of particular attention…The novel was acclaimed by contemporary critics, and republished in numerous editions and translations. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) Frýd’s successful novel was published twice in Czech in 1956, with this 1st edition being much rarer than the stated 2nd edition. OCLC lists just 4 copies worldwide (Emory, Wisconsin, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Univ Of Basel) , and none in New York City or in the North East United States. Slight toning. And minor edgewear to dust jacket but overall both book and jacket are in very good condition. Attractive, rare, and important. (holo2-135-48)‎

‎New English Paperback. Folio. (32 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 46 p. Edirne Eyaleti dâhiminde Kâ'in Tekfurdagi Kaymakamligi idaresinde bulunan Gelibolu kazasinin Millet-i Yahudiyân nüfus defterinin günümüz Türkçesiyle tipkibasimi. The Contemporary Turkish facsimile of the Gelibolu district Jewish community population register at the Tekfurdagi Governorship office situated inside Edirne Province. Throughout history people have wished to research their past, their family and their family tree. Although being of a verifiable noble genealogy does not change the social status of the person in the modern age, this is the result of the human irrepressible desire for learning. For all groups of people whose roots are based in this geography, the Ottoman Period population registers are the most significant reference guides. The 1845 population register of the Gelibolu Jewish Community -which is published in Turkish and English at same time- includes many details about the members of the community.‎

‎PESIQ EIN GLOSSENZEICHEN: INAUGURAL-DISSERTATION ZUR ERLANGUNG DER DOKTORWÜRDE DER HOHEN PHILOSOPHISCHEN FAKULTÄT DER UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG‎

‎Original Wraps. 8vo. VII, 149 pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German and Hebrew. 'Pesiq [Hebrew Accent Mark] as Gloss-Sign' Dissertation for the University of Leipzig. Hugo Fuchs (1878-1949) “studied philology and history at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig, receiving his doctorate from the University of Leipzig in 1907. Fuchs continued his studies at the Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (Institute for the Study of Judaism) . In 1907 Fuchs became the rabbi of Chemnitz, a position he would hold until 1938. He also headed the Zentralstelle für jüdische Wohlfahrtspflege (Central Agency for Jewish Welfare) in Chemnitz. Fuchs was a liberal rabbi, and influenced by theologians like Abraham Geiger. His interest in the subject of Jewish resettlement in Palestine was evidenced by his support of the activities of organizations such as Keren Hayesod, a fundraising organization for Palestine, and the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith) . A prolific writer, Fuchs's articles on various aspects of Judaism and Jewish life often appeared in various newspapers. Among these were Liberales Judentum, the Jüdisch-liberale Zeitung, the Israelitisches Familienblatt, and others. He also wrote the Lehrbuch der jüdischen Geschichte, first published in 1922, which gave an overview of the history of the Jewish people and their religion. After Kristallnacht, during which the Chemnitz Synagogue was destroyed, Hugo Fuchs was arrested and sent to a concentration camp. In 1939 he was permitted to leave Germany, and emigrated to Argentina. He led the Jewish community of Buenos Aires until his death in 1949.” - Guide to the Papers of Hugo Fuchs, CJH. Subjects: Paseq (The Hebrew accent) . Hebrew language - Writing. Philology. Hebrew Grammar. Light soiling to wraps, lightly bumped edges, otherwise clean and fresh. Very good condition. (GER-45-15)‎
