WISSENSCHAFTLICHE ZEITSCHRIFT FUR JUDISCHE THEOLOGIE (VOLUME 1 ONLY)
Hardcover, 8vo, 22 cm. In German. SUBJECT (S) : Judaism -- Works to 1900. Judaism -- Doctrines. Reform Judaism. The first volume of this important journal, which ran a total of 6 volumes 1835-1847. Geiger (18101874) was a pioneer of the Wissenschaft des Judentums and founder of Reform Judaism . Geiger was born in Frankfurt am Main to an Orthodox family and received a traditional religious education. Already in his childhood, he began studying classical history, which gave rise to doubts concerning biblical claims to divine authority. At the age of 17, Geiger began writing a study of the Mishnah, differentiating its legal style from biblical and talmudic law, and a dictionary of Mishnaic Hebrew. The two journals he edited contain numerous articles of scholarly and theological significance: Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift fuer juedische Theologie (183539) and Juedische Zeitschrift fuer Wissenschaft und Leben (186275) (Heschel in EJ 2007) . JUDAISM AND ITS HISTORY
CLOSING WITH THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SECOND TEMPLE [&]
1st English Language Edition. Original publisher's quarter leather. 12mo. VIII, II, 343 pages. 20 cm. Singerman 1942. Vol. 1, no more published. " Translation of: Das Judenthum und seine Geschichte. Tan leather with gilt lettering and trim, brown cloth boards; marbled fore edges with matching end papers. Abraham Geiger German rabbi and scholar; born at Frankfort-on-the-Main May 24, 1810; died at Berlin Oct. 23, 1874.
His lectures on Judaism and its history (Das Judenthum und Seine Geschichte, 2d ed. Of vol. I. , 1864; 3d vol. , 1869-71) were in the nature of university extension courses. Brilliantly presented, his views lost none of their scholarly thoroughness. His introductory lecture, giving his views on revelation, is especially worthy of note: the genius of the people of Israel is the vehicle of revelationa view at once liberal and loyal, though hopelessly in opposition to the mechanical theory of revelation held to be orthodox. In these lectures, too, Geiger gave without reserve the results of his studies on the origin of Christianity, while in connection with the second series he prepared a biography of Ibn Gabirol (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Judaism - History. Jews - History. Ex-synagogue library with early (19th Century?) synagogue library bookplate on front pastedown with card pocket as expetcted, no other markings, all text pages clean, paper and binding nice an bright and tight with original marbled endpapers.
