Geiger (1810–1874) was a “pioneer of the Wissenschaft des Judentums and founder of Reform Judaism . Geiger was born in Frankfurt am Main to an Orthodox family and received a traditional religious education. Already in his childhood, he began studying classical history, which gave rise to doubts concerning biblical claims to divine authority. At the age of 17, Geiger began writing a study of the Mishnah, differentiating its legal style from biblical and talmudic law, and a dictionary of Mishnaic Hebrew. The two journals he edited contain numerous articles of scholarly and theological significance: Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift fuer juedische Theologie (1835–39) and Juedische Zeitschrift fuer Wissenschaft und Leben (1862–75) ” (Heschel in EJ 2007) . ‎In einer Wandverkleidung hinter der Heizung ihres Wohnzimmers fand Inge Geiler eines Tages ein Bündel Papiere. Es waren lose Zettel, Fotografien, Zeitungen, Postkarten und Briefe, gerichtet an ein Ehepaar, das zu Beginn der vierziger Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts in diesem Zimmer gewohnt hatte. Meier und Elise Grünbaum waren, aus Wiesbaden kommend, in ein jüdisches Altersheim nach Frankfurt gezogen. Von dort aus mieteten sie sich ein Zimmer in der jüdischen Pension Nussbaum, wo sie bis zur Deportation nach Theresienstadt lebten. Erst Jahre später fand Inge Geiler die Zeit, den Spuren ihrer »Gäste« zu folgen. Sie recherchierte auf Standes- und Einwohnermeldeämtern, suchte in Geburts- und Sterberegistern und setzte Stück für Stück das Bild einer großen Familie zusammen, die die Zeitläufte auseinandergerissen hatten. Eingebettet in die Geschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, erzählt Inge Geiler in sehr berührender Weise die Geschichte der Familie Grünbaum: von ihren Ursprüngen in Geisa und Forchheim bis in die USA, wo Nachkommen der weitverzweigten Familie heute leben. Ohne den zufälligen Fund der Briefe wären Meier und Elise Grünbaum anonyme Opfer geblieben. In »Wie ein Schatten sind unsere Tage« wird ihre Geschichte bewahrt und weitergegeben.
