Jedes Jahr machte er aus denselben Holzbalken das Hüttengerüst, die Wände waren aus Palmzweigen und Laub, das Dach aus runden dunkelgrünen Palmwedeln und graugrünen Pinienzweigen, die er frisch von den Bäumen seines Gartens geschnitten hatte. Wenn wir meinen Großvater während des Festes besuchten, lud er uns sofort in die Laubhütte zum Essen ein und sprach dort leise den Segen: Gepriesen seist du, Ewiger, unser Gott, König der Welt, der uns durch seine Gebote geheiligt und uns geboten hat, in der Laubhütte zu wohnen , und seine kleinen schwarzen Augen funkelten vor Freude. Jahresfeste wie das Laubhüttenfest brauchten oft Jahrhunderte der Umwandlung und Verdichtung, bis sie zu sich selbst, ihrer feststehenden Gestalt und Bedeutung fanden. In 1585 he settled in Turkey where he reverted to Judaism under the name Solomon Abenaes. Because of his wealth, experience, and connections, he came to be highly regarded at the Turkish court, renewing the position of Joseph Nasi, who had died in 1579. Abenaes was one of the architects of the Anglo-Turkish alliance. Shortly after his arrival in Turkey, Abenaes secured the renewal, in his own favor, of the grant of Tiberias and seven adjoining townships that had originally been made to Nasi.
